Fantasy Focus: Time for Kevin Gausman

Keven Gausman will be recalled from a rehab assignment on Monday to start a game for the Baltimore Orioles.  If you manage a fantasy baseball team, this should be of great interest to you.  Gausman has been a highly touted pitching prospect seemingly forever.  He has tremendous stuff and excellent peripheral stats both in the minors and in 3 partial MLB seasons.  What is not so great is his ERA which has lagged behind other indicators.  He's still just 25 years old, so a lot of people were predicting a major breakout this year.  Then, right at the end of spring training, he came up with a sore shoulder with no structural damage and went on the DL.  He has now completed 3 minor league rehab starts and is ready to go.

I wrote about Gausman as a possible breakout candidate this offseason.  Just to review, here are his cumulative MLB stats in parts of 3 seasons so far:  14-19, 4.21, 7.63 K/9, 2.63 BB/9, FIP= 3.80, xFIP= 3.72.  Last year's line was 4-7, 4.25, 8.25 K/9, 2.32 BB/9, FIP= 4.10, xFIP= 3.80.  His FB averaged over 95 MPH last year which puts him up in elite territory.  In his 3 rehab starts at 3 levels, he's pitched 11 innings while allowing 4 ER, 5 BB, 19 K.  In his last rehab start at AAA level, he went 5.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 9 K's.

He is a particularly inviting add for this week in H2H leagues as he will start twice.  Whether you go after him probably depends on how much faith you put in peripheral stats.  All indicators are that he's underperformed so far.  With a good  hitting team to back him up, he should generate Wins as well as lots of K's with a low WHIP.  The ERA?  We'll have to see on that!  I just added him to my Savvy Vets roster while dropping Chris Bassitt.

  1. I was able to pick up Snell before today's start and he didn't disappoint. I'm not so sure about Gausman. The stuff is there but he hasn't shown he can put it all together yet. I had Jose Berrios stashed away as one of my 4 bench spots and I had to drop him to get Snell. Now that Snell has been sent back down I'm not sure if I should keep him or pick Berrios back up and be patient. I also like Lucas Giolito a lot and considering how horrible the NL East is he might be the best stash of them all.
