Live Blogging the 2015 Draft Day 2

Giants hit rounds 3 and 4 out of the park if they can get these guys signed.

Had never heard of Ronnie Jebavy, but looks like a player with size, speed, hit and power at least.

OK.  Did I call this one or what?  Jose Vizcaino in round 7!!!

  1. Jebavy > saving $ to sign Miller/Marshall?

  2. Here's an article from a Tennessee paper on Jebavy, sounds promising:

    1. Looks good in those videos. Really like that pick. Athletic bat, looks like a leadoff type with plus defense in CF.

  3. And SF takes Jose Vizcaino, Jr.!

  4. Now Vizcaino Jr?!?!? They haven't played draft games like this since 2012!

  5. Love that they drafted Jose Vizcaino Jr. Just so we can continue to look through the minor league rosters and continue to the see names of former Giants throughout.

  6. Possible Giants' draft strategy: 1) Draft players that have fallen because of bonus pool concerns. 2) Blow through their bonus pool limit to sign them all. 3) Lose 1st round picks in next two drafts. (the punishment for overspending.) This would make sense if the Giants have already decided that they are going to go after free agents that will cost them the 1st round picks anyway.

    1. I'm pretty sure the Giants will get at least 9 of their top 10 picks signed and will not lose future draft picks. I don't see anyone on their draft list who will require more than a $100 K or 2 above slot to sign.

    2. They're not going to do that for this class. We got some good value in the mid rounds, but this class is too shallow to punt ones future picks. They will make it work.

Suarez is a senior who thought he could improve on his second round selection from last year. He's not a typical senior with no leverage, but there is money to be had there. There is probably some savings to be had with Shaw, and Bickford will sign around slot (if he signs) like most of our st round guys do.

Marshal agreed to a 615k bonus with the Astros, so we have an idea what he is looking for. His stock is a bit up, but we dont draft guys we dont think we can sign.

    3. I think there's little reason to blow through our limits and lose draft picks the next two years. Next year's draft class is way stronger with potential franchise players. Possibly as deep as 2012.

  7. I thonk this draft isnt strong as in super star status players, but have a lot of good players Bickford i think though has a chance to be a #2 starter at worst a 3rd starter.

  10. Just want to say thanks to everybody for reading and commenting. I think we set a record over the last 24 hours with almost 5000 visits to the site. I don't do any of this to try to get more visits, but it's very gratifying to know people find it worthwhile to come here, read and comment.

    1. Record views on my site as well... Giants fans really came heavy for the draft this year. It's a testament to your hard work DrB... a very humbling feeling.

I really hope Bickford and others were watching tonight. Chris Heston, a former DFA player, hits the pinnacle of success for a pitcher. He's not going anywhere!

    2. Thanks to you, Covechatter, and Shankbone for the great work and thoughts on the draft! I like the Giants picks.. I'm excited that Beede is on the fast track and they add another right handed SP with a live arm in Bickford and two solid lefthanded SP'S in Suarez and Marshall. When I read that Miller projects to be the same type of offense player as Brandon Philips, that sounds good to me! Hope that Shaw can develop into a middle of the order bat, and have Brandon Belt looking over his shoulder! What I like is some of these players drafted between rounds 4 thru 10 sound like they have potential to develop into good pro players as well.. Even their 9th round pick David Graybill was drafted twice before.

  11. Between Miller, Marshall and Jebavy I think the Giants did extremely well today. Very excited about Miller, that looks like a total steal.

    1. Yup, really like all 3 of those picks plus Duggar and Viz. I'll have to check out the others. It was already a good draft on day 1, but Barr and his team hit it out of the park today! Everybody is drooling over the Astros right now, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say I think in 5 years we'll look back and say the Giants had a better draft.

  12. Tyler Cyr scouting report http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/far-west-league-top-10-prospects/

"Cyr transfers to NAIA power Embry Riddle this year after pitching for Skyline (Calif.) CC, and he opened some eyes this summer thanks to the league’s best fastball. It sat at 93-95 mph in the FWL and touched 97. Cyr has a long, lean frame with room to add more weight. His changeup flashed plus potential out of the bullpen and he also mixed in a get-me-over slider. Cyr has issues commanding his pitches and throwing strikes in general, walking 17 in 15 innings while striking out 20. But he throws gas, and he could reward a pro club that takes a flier on him next June."
