Down on the Farm: 6/23/2015

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Sacramento River Cats 6-2:

Kevin Frandsen(2B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .299.
Darren Ford(CF)- 1 for 3, HR(6), BB.  BA= .252.
Travis Ishikawa(1B)- 1 for 3, HR(4), BB.  BA= .271.
Chris Stratton(RHP)- 2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 BB, ERA= 2.33.
Jack Snodgrass(LHP)- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.22.

Stratton threw 61 pitches in the 2 innings which is the likely reason for his early exit.  Snodgrass has pitched out of the bullpen since his promotion to AAA as a lefty reliever who can go more than 1 inning.  The Giants somehow managed to figure out a way to get 1 more rehab start out of both Jake Peavy and Matt Cain so they won't be back in SF until July 2 and July 3 respectively.  This allows them to kick the can down the road on their tough decisions on how to sort out their 7 starters for 5 rotation slots.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels blanked the Trenton Thunder 4-0:

Kelby Tomlinson(2B)- 2 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .328.
Rando Moreno(SS)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .308.
Engel Beltre(CF)- 3 for 4.  BA= .352.
Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 9/3.  ERA= 1.53.
Gregorio(4.85), Law(0.00), Osich(1.59)- 1 IP, 0 R, 2 K's each.

Mejia has now had 2 fairly dominant starts and 1 bad one since coming off the suspended list.  I am intrigued by the future possibilities for Tomlinson, Moreno and most of all Engel Beltre.

Richard Rodriguez(SS)- 2 for 5.  BA= .273.

Kevin Rivera(2B)- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .455.
Geno Escalante(Catcher)- 2 for 3, 2 2B, HBP.  BA= .667.
Evan Potter(SS)- 3 for 4.  BA= .357.
Stetson Woods(RHP)- 4.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Successful 2015 debut for Stetson Woods.  Giants pitchers hit a total of 5 batters in this game.

    1. Beats are suggesting that Hudson will be DLed for ankle and hip problems, and Timmy will be moved into the bullpen to figure out what has been wrong lately and how to get back to where he was early in the season. Did he stop talking with his dad again or something?

    2. As I have said several times, Timmy will still have good games and bad games, but the fact is his FB velocity continues to erode at an alarming rate, down to 87.5 MPH this season. As time goes on, he will have more bad games and less good ones. There is no mechanical fix, not magic from dad. It's father time taking it's toll. I think we all knew from the beginning that with is body type and delivery, Timmy was likely to not have one of the longer careers in the history of starting pitching.

  2. Doc, I know this may be a leap of faith; how about doing a Panik and Duffy this year and calling Mac W up from Richmond.!! What do you think?
I am guessing Broadway will be back now that Romo is likely heading to the DL

    1. I would be surprised if they called up Mac this year, but you never know. I could think of worse moves.

  3. Do you think Tomlinson and Moreno's futures are necessarily with the Giants since there seems to be such an overstock of MIs? I'm not sure when the trade deadline is, but do you think either of them would be good trade material for say, another quality SP for the big club? Tomlinson especially appears to be ready to make that jump to the majors as a utility MI. I'd like to see him get some innings at 3B. And quite honestly, from the looks of Arias' stats, Tomlinson could do much better. He could certainly do no worse. I know there would be some who would call for Adrianza, or maybe Frandsen, before Tomlinson, but I would cast my vote for Kelby.

As for Beltre, he took over CF upon his arrival in RVA and has done a stellar job! It will be interesting to see how he progresses through the season. He's been pretty injury prone to this point in his career, but if he can stay healthy, he's going to be a contributor beyond AA for sure!

    1. All I know is if I was a GM of a random other team out there and needed cheap MI help, I would be burning up the phone lines to Bobby Evans hoping he wouldn't take me to the cleaners the way Sabes alway did, or even deign to talk to me, for that matter.

  4. Doc, where do you see Kelby and Rando filling in? With Duffy, Crawford and Panik, doesn't seem like there is much room other than for a super utility guy (Can Kelby play 3b so he could back up all three)? Great to see Mejia in good form; we need him for next year to round out the staff with Bumgarner, Presto and (hopefully) Cain. That would be a big shot in the arm and take pressure off the need for a 5th guy.

    1. Never hurts to have more MLB ready talent in the pipeline. How long before Crawford gets really expensive? Do you really want to pay that much for him? How much would be bring back in a trade? How much might Adrianza, Kelby or Moreno bring in trade? See, the possibilities are intriguing.

  5. If it weren't for the fact we're down to three healthy OFers, I'd be up for bringing Tomlinson up while Aoki is on the DL. See what he could as a utility infielder. If he shows anything Duffy-like, keep him up here and DFA Arias whom I've fairly soured on.

But with only 3 healthy OF... I guess the best play would be to bring back Parker back. Or just take a flyer and Williamson or Beltre a shot?

  6. Tough blow for Nick Vander Tuig as he had a 2nd TJ this week
