Down on the Farm: 6/2/2015

AAA  Sacramento River Cats edged out the Oklahoma City Dodgers 3-2:

Casey McGehee(3B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .364.
Hector Sanchez(Catcher)- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .259.
Kevin Frandsen(2B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .318.
Darren Ford(CF)- 1 for 4, BB, SB(12).  BA= .260.
Nik Turley(LHP)- 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 6.30.

I think they should change the name of this team to the Sacramento Giants Alumni.  It's becoming harder to imagine the Giants not finding a way to keep Casey McGehee.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Portland Sea Dogs 4-3:

Daniel Carbonell(LF)- 1 for 4, SB(8).  BA= .170.
Joe Biagini(RHP)- 7.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 14/2.  ERA= 1.82.

Big Joe just keeps pounding the strike zone.

High A  San Jose Giants beat the Inland Empire 66'ers 5-1:

Jesus Galindo(CF)- 2 for 5, SB(12).  BA= .278.
Hunter Cole(RF)- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .342.
Ryder Jones(3B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .281.
Ben Turner(1B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .275.
Ty Ross(Catcher)- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .213.
Keury Mella(RHP)- 5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.89.

Mella has 42 K's against 14 BB's in 43.2 IP so far, although 13 of the BB's have come in his last 28.2 IP.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets blanked the Charleston Sea Dogs 3-0:

Cristian Paulino(CF)- 2 for 5, 2 SB(14), Assist(Home).  BA= .321.
Travious Relaford(2B)- 2 for 5.  BA= .288.
Jonah Arenado(3B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .267.
Andrew Cain(RF)- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB.  BA= .191.
Sam Coonrod(RHP)- 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.83.
Raymundo Montero(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.60.
Reyes Maronta(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(4).  ERA= 3.52.

Speaking of tools, Paulino continues to display his.  Cain's 3 run dinger accounted for the only scoring in the game.  Wonder if it is about time to give Coonrod a bump to SJ?

DSL Giants topped the Dodgers 5-4:

Sandro Fabian(RF, 17 yo)- 2 for 4, 2 2B, Assist(3B).  BA= .273.

Fabian is bigger than your typical DSL signee at 6'2", 190 lbs.  He got a 6 figure signing bonus and is 17 years old.  Definitely on the watch list!

  1. Since we now live in OKC I have tickets to all 4 games of the Rivercat series this week.. Here is my rundown. Casey looks like he is moving a lot better in the field. You couldn't see any problems really with his movement. He hit the ball hard 3 times. Eric Cordier threw the hardest last night hitting 97. Cody Hall was only hitting 91 on the gun but did decent but nothing spectacular. Mike Broadway was the closer and he looked good, hitting 95. That kid is ripped by the way, My daughter went with me to the game and said it looked like he had buns of steel. Like you said Doc, the rest of the line-up looks like a bunch of Giants alumni. Adrianza looks good in the field. Darren Ford is still fast as hell. Ishi made a couple of nice picks at 1st. Frandsen botched an easy ball hit to second and our boy Jarett Parker looked like he was trying to kill the ball every at bat and struck out 4 times, it was pretty ugly.

  2. BTW, unfortunately, Cory Seager looks like a beast. Standing next to Ishi he is at least 1-2 inches taller and has a pretty sweet looking left handed stroke.

  3. Hey Doc,

Can you remember a AAA team being as stocked with former MLBer's than ours? I think it speaks to the fact that once you are a Giant you always are a Giant, even if it is in the minors. And that Evans/Sabean see the value of not only having veteran depth on the bench but at AAA. I think most of those guys would be serviceable in a pinch and one or two might even do something special like Ishi did last year.

    1. As I have said many times, Brian Sabean is not hard to figure out. If he does something that works, he keeps going back to it until it doesn't. I believe the success Vogey has had and more recently what Travis Ishikawa did last year made a big impression. And it isn't just the success. It's the passion they brought with them and the response they got from the fans. Put that all together and yes, I think bringing back former Giants who have fallen on hard times and giving them a chance to revive their careers, whether it be for a moment like Travis or for a whole second career like Vogey, is now incorporated into the team's baseball and business model of operation.
