Down on the Farm: 6/1/2015

AAA  Colorado Springs Skysox defeated the Sacramento River Cats 5-3:

Casey McGehee(3B)- 3 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .345.
Juan Gutierrez(RHP)- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.39.
Cory Gearrin(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.96.
Steven Okert(LHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.28.

McGehee is stating his case for returning to the 25 man roster after June 4.  Gutierrez was pressed into service as a starter due to contract opt outs.  Maybe he should be stretched out and see what happens?  Cory Gearrin has several years of MLB experience with Atlanta.  He joined the River Cats roster on 5/9 and has pitched well.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels beat the Reading Fightin' Phils 5-3:

Daniel Carbonell(CF)- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .168.
Matt Lujan(LHP)- 6 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.66.

Carbonell has these occasional flashes but has never gotten any traction.

High A  Inland Empire 66'ers downed the San Jose Giants 7-4:

Seth Harrison(CF)- 2 for 5, SB(1).  BA= .300.
Christian Arroyo(SS)- 1 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .333.
Hunter Cole(RF)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .340.
Ben Turner(Catcher)- 1 for 2, BB, SF.  BA= .263.
Andrew Leenhouts(LHP)- 5.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 8/1.  ERA= 5.06.
Sean Newcomb(LHP)-  5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 3.22.

Leenhouts was brought in from extended spring training to replace Nik Turley who was called up to Sacramento.

Low A  Charleston River Dogs outlasted the Augusta Greenjackets 4-2 in 12 innings:

Travious Relaford(2B)- 2 for 5, 2B, BB.  BA= .284.
Cristian Paulino(RF)- 2 for 6, 2 SB(12), Assist(3B).  BA= .317.
Skyler Ewing(1B)- 3 for 5, 2B, BB.  BA= .205.
Mark Reyes(LHP)- 7 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 12/0.  ERA= 1.50.

Skyler Ewing's bat seems to be coming to life a bit.  He has a 4 game hit streak in which he is 7 for 18.

DSL  Giants downed the Twins 8-3:

Jose Patino(CF, 17 yo)- 0 for 4, 2 BB, SB(1, home).  BA= .125.
Jose Rivero(SS, 17 yo)- 3 for 6, SB(1).  BA= .300.
Robinson Medrano(1B)- 3 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .750.
Beicker Mendoza(DH, 17 yo)- 2 for 5.  BA= .375.
Manuel Geraldo(2B)- 2 for 5.  BA= .500.
Victor Concepcion(RHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Luis Amaya(LHP, 16 yo)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

There seem to be quite a few under-18 prospects on this year's DSL team, a very good thing!  This is Medrano's 3'rd DSL season. He always seems to start off hot then lose steam as the season goes along. I am surprised Concepcion is not in the States this season.

  1. Is Edie still on extended spring training? Is he going to play on the DSL, DrB? I don't have any info regarding him as of today. Thank you!

    1. I assume Edie will be a member of the Rookie League AZL Giants. They get started about a week after the draft.

  2. Do not have time to confirm, but according to comment on Extra Baggs, he saw on Twitter that Beede will be pitching for Richmond later this week for his next start. So I guess the Giants considered that 11k start to be a breakthrough too, and they did what you said they did for others, promote him to AA.

  3. Gearrin's overall historic numbers in the minors were excellent. The number during his time in Atlanta were quite decent.
Sacramento is looking like an AAAA.
Lots of potential help if the big team needs it.

  4. Per his Dad's twitter account, Beede is headed to Richmond. Fast track baby!

    1. Cool! I hope he makes the opening day roster next year (and plays to his potential). Hudson, Vogelsong & Lincecum will be FA and I just have a bad feeling about Peavy's back since it's a SI joint issue and, from what I understand (not being a doctor) those cases that drag out tend to be tricky to fix.

I our starting rotation, next year, could be Bumgarner, Cain (hopefully) and three new people. I'd like it if Beede could be one of those people. And Heston if he can continue his MLB success and steady-up a bit.

  5. I've always kind of thought of AA as the real make or break squad for the Giants. It seems like, and I could be wrong, that guys who end up going to AAA club for any measure of time rarely end up being super productive for the big league. The guys who get through it quickly, or come almost direct from AA, seem to do better. I remember talking to a guy who played in the minors and he seemed to suggest AAA clubs were really a wasteland. I get you need them for emergency players but seems like that is about it. Only exception I can think of is relief pitchers. Kontos spent a fair amount of time in the minors and Strickland did a bit there too (although the latter was really a AA call up last year, no?).

Would love to see Beede rip it up in AA and then be ready for the big club next year. That would leave only one spot to fill, assuming Cain comes back and Heston holds up. Lot of flexiblity on the payroll if that happens.

    1. Most MLB teams use AAA as an extended bench for depth at the MLB level now. The Giants probably do it more than most teams. Yes, most top prospects do not spend much time in AAA. If you can dominate AA, then you are essentially ready for MLB.

    1. Honestly, by the end of last year I pretty much gave up on him.

  7. Doc, could you give a list of your top draft prospects that you hope the Giants may have a chance to select before the draft on monday? Something like 10- 20 names long. Thanks for all your hard work and wealth of information.

    1. That's coming up Monday? Wow! Time flies! I will put up at least 1 more pre-draft post. It might be a mock draft or it might be a draft board or maybe both depending on how much time I have.

  8. Jack Snodgrass and Christ Stratton have been promoted to Sacramento.

    1. It will be interesting to see how Stratton fares in the PCL. It's a tough league to pitch in.

  9. Good stuff Doc. You did this in passing last year, but any particular prospects you're keeping an eye on or excited about on the DSL team for this year?

    1. Well, the 6 figure bonus babies like the SS Rivero, Sandro Fabian, pretty much anybody who is 17 years old or younger. I love Geraldo and am disappointed he is not in Arizona this year. I've been intrigued by Robinson Medrano for the last 2 years, but apparently the Giants are not as intrigued as I am.
