Hot Tip: Pablo Sandoval Probably Isn't In the Best Shape of His Life

OK, listen up team!  Any of you out there who still think it was imperative that the Giants re-sign Pablo Sandoval at any price?  You just might want to check out this photo posted on cbssports.com.  It's entitled PHOTO:  Pablo Sandoval Probably Isn't In the Best Shape of His Life.

Oh my!  This is so special!  Now I have to say I have warned repeatedly that Pablo's body type is a time bomb waiting to go off, but I don't think even I thought it would get this bad this fast.

Check it out!!!

  1. You might not of, but I did. I can't remember which writer it was, but it was reported the real reason he wanted out of SF wasn't to 'find new challenges' but to find a club that was a clubbing/party kind of place so he could enjoy the party life-style that the Giants didn't have. And he got it. And now he's looking pretty damn fat.

    1. I don't remember him saying that exactly, but I do recall seeing a quote attributed to his brother that one of the reasons he wanted out of San Francisco is he didn't want "no stinking weight clauses" in his contract. Well, now the Red Sox are going to find out what happens when Pablo doesn't have to account for his weight to anyone.

    2. I think he said something about wanting to party with Big Papi in Boston. Either way, he has always been just a big kid, now he's a big kid with $95 million dollars away from home for the first time, so to speak. This may not end well.

  2. Well I got a lot of smack talk back on the various sites I frequent when I said Pablo was not worth the cost due to his inability to control his weight and the fact that he has never really completely hit his full potential. The fans in Boston are already talking crap and the first week of spring has not even ended. I think this is really going to end up as a pretty sad story before it is all over and given the what he gave the Giants I am not looking forward to the crash.

    1. Same thing. And I do hope he does get it under control. I'd hate to see him washing out of baseball in his early 30s or kicking the bucket at 45 because he just won't take care of himself.

  3. On a happier note, just saw a video of Matt Cain being interviewed at Pebble Beach. He has really slimmed down! Hopefully he hasn't lost strength in the process.

  4. I think it speaks volumes about his attitude. He sign's that big contact and then comes into his first camp with his new team out of shape when his brother is his personal chef and he has a trainer? Its basically a Big F U to them IMO. Not a good first impression.

  5. Well, first day or two of ST. And, Pablo is really, really talented. So he's going to have his moments, especially in that park.

But, yeah, that pic makes the divorce seem a little more...palatable?

    Snicker. Snort...Ahem.

    1. There are people who are saying, "well, he's always been big." Well, he's not always been THAT big and when he has, he has not performed well on the field.

    2. In seven years as a Giant, he was a liability on defense three years, according to Fangraphs. He looks like he might be headed for another liability year, and it probably doesn't help that he has in the back of his mind that he can always be a DH and not have to worry about being too fat to play third.

    3. I was looking at an first-day of training camp picture from 2013. When Panda came in at 262, looking at that picture, I'm thinking he's WAY bigger than 262...

  6. Being a glass half-full guy, I'm going with the fact that the angle of that photo could be a little misleading. After the build-up to it, I didn't think he looked all that much bigger. He abdomen is just inherently large, and yeah, looks like a bit of a roll at his belt line. But his arms and legs don't look big, so the tweet and photo are smacking of snarkiness to me.

My non-professional guess is that if Pablo does balloon up to any degree, fan and management outrage will snap him back in line, and he'll likely play as well as he ever has, with some ups and downs of course. It's too easy to jump on the downer bandwagon- I wish him the best.

    1. Pablo's problem has never been that his arms and legs were too big. It was that he was centrally obese, and no, his belly has not always been that large.

  7. On a different note- hope you don't mind having me hijack this thread. Bochy ranked as top manager in MLB by Boston Globe.

    1. Top manager very clearly. Nick Cafardo says the choice wasn't hard, and piles up the "great" evaluations for Bochy.

  8. Matt Bonesteel from the Washington Post had this to say:

"What, exactly, did everyone expect here? That Sandoval would go on some sort of juice cleanse? That he would shed his “Panda” nickname for a more svelte animal, like the puma? He’s just a big guy who signed a big contract and looks pretty much the same as he always has."

Amazing, one media guy who isn't yelling fire where none exists. I rest my case.

    1. There have been times when Pablo has come to camp in much better shape than that. When he has come in looking like this, he has generally not performed well. So Matt Bonesteel is wrong. Pablo does not look pretty much the same as he always has.
