Scouting the 2015 Draft: Richie Martin
Richie Martin is the relatively rare college SS who is believed to have the tools to stay at the position. He has 2 plus tools: speed and arm. His sophomore slash line was not terribly impressive at .265/.354/.337 with 18 SB's. He had a breakout Cape Cod League with a .364 BA and 3 HR's. He could move up the rankings with a big junior season. BA currently has him at #30 while Kiley McDaniel of Fangraphs has him at #37.

I was saddened to read about the passing of a baseball icon Rocky Bridges on Wednesday at the age of 87. I met him back in the mid 70's when he was the manager of the Hawaii Islanders AAA team, he was nice enough to autograph a baseball for me.. He later managed the Giants AAA team in Phoenix from the late 70's to early 80's, where I use to look forward to his teams coming to Hawaii every year to play the Islanders. I believe he was the Giants 3rd base coach in 1985. He's done it all in baseball starting as MLB player, MLB coach, minor league manager for 21 season, and scout. I remember him as one of those true characters of the game, where he always appeared with a big wad of chewing tobacco in his cheek.. I was pleased to read that Jim Leyland paid him a complement saying while he has known as being a character, Bridges knew his stuff regarding baseball knowledge.. RIP Rocky Bridges.

DeleteI remember one of the Giants announcers, Lon Simmons I think, telling a story about how Bridges convinced minor leaguers to not be afraid of facing the pitching machine during batting practice by standing in front of the machine and having balls bounce off his chest. Rocky Bridges...even his name was pure old school... they just don't make 'em like that any more.
