Down on the Farm: 09-05-2010

AAA Tacoma Rainiers erupted for a 9-0 win over the Fresno Grizzlies:

Brandon Belt- 1 for 3, 2B. BA= .233.
Henry Sosa- 4 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 4.07.
Brandon Medders- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 5.67.
Dontrelle Willis- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 5.06.

Sosa gave up a lot of hits, but his K/BB suggests he might have been unlucky in this one beyond the errors. Medders 3'rd scoreless outing in a row and Willis' second. I wonder if both might be called up to the MLB club. Both would have to be added to the 40 man roster but Alex Hinshaw and Kevin Pucetas could both be dropped fairly safely.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels edged the Bowie Baysox 1-0:

Craig Westcott- 6.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 5.13.
Andy Sisco- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 4.32.
Rafael Cova- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, Save(22). ERA= 2.40

Cova is another pitcher rumored to be a possible callup to the majors, or he could go back to San Jose for the playoffs.

High A San Jose Giants edged the Visalia Rawhide 4-3:

Francisco Peguero- 3 for 4, 2B, 3B(16). BA= .329.
Johnny Monell- 3 for 3, 3B, HR(19), BB. BA= .275.
Justin Fitzgerald- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.45.
Ryan Verdugo- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 1.47.

Verdugo's combined season line: 8-1, 1.87, 62.2 IP, 33 BB, 94 K's. Could stand to cut down on the BB's, but he sure misses bats, doesn't he?

Low A Augusta Greenjackets edged the Delmarva Shorebirds 3-2:

Chris Dominguez- 2 for 4, HR(20), BB. BA= .272.
Jesse Shriner- 3 for 3, HR(1), BB. BA= .267.
Brian Irving- 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.42.
Chris Gloor- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.65.
Chris Wilson- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(4). ERA= 2.76.

Dominguez gets to 20 HR's and is hitting .333/.413/.718 over his last 10. Especially encouraging is he seems to have picked up the walks and cut down on the K's late in the season. His IsoOBP(OBP-BA)= a respectable .054 for the season. Wouldn't that be something if this guy made himself into a hitter? OMG!

Short Season Salem-Keizer Volcanoes pounded the Eugene Emeralds 9-4:

Gary Brown- 0 for 4, 3 K's. BA= .136.
Carter Jurica- 3 for 5, HR(4), SB(10). BA= .216.
Jose Medina- 2 for 3, 2 BB. BA= .255.
Devin Harris- 2 for 5, HR(1). BA= .273.
Jeff Arnold- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(3). BA= .241.
John Eshleman- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .250.

Jurica has come alive at the end of the season hitting .317 over his last 10 games raising hopes for next season. Devin Harris has also really caught fire with a .417/.432/.639 line for his last 10 games. Gary Brown continues to struggle. Rico Noel went 4 for 5 with 2 triples in this game for the Ems.

  1. I think Baggarly noted that the Giants are negotiating to sell Hinshaw to Japanes club.

Sounds like no space or playing time for Belt. I am OK with that, give him 2011 to play AAA, show 2010 not fluke, see if Huff can continue or if one last blast, could bring up early if anyone is struggling.

Nice to see Jurica doing better. Particularly the HRs. Too soon to make anything about Brown, I think, too bad not in AFL.

  2. I agree with you on Brown and the AFL. Too bad the Hawaiian Winter League folded. That was a great place for new draftees who signed late to get their feet wet. Not really worried about Brown. Most likely has some rust from the extra long layoff first from broken fingy and then the ridiculous wait to start negotiations post-draft.

  3. Oh yeah, the HWL, still got a shirt from their first try at that league, I wonder why it has always failed? I think that helped Posey, the Giants learned some things, were able to pull him out to instructional league, then send him back.

Didn't mean to imply you were worried, just opining. I agree about the rust and I would bet the negotiations wasn't that long, just that MLB held off on approving until they felt the time was right. Boras was too busy with #1 negos... I like seeing all the walks, though, at least that shows something.
