Catching up after a quick business trip to Portland OR.
Jonathan Sanchez was effectively wild for 5 innings and the bullpen took over from there. Aubrey Huff almost singlehandedly scratched out a run off Clayton Richard who has had ownage on the Giants during his brief career so far, and the Giants moved into a tie for first place in the NL West with a 1-0 win over the Padres, a nice payback for all those low-scoring wins early in the season by the Padres. Key lines:
Aubrey Huff- 0 for 3, HBP, SB(6). BA= .291. Huff Daddy took matters into his own hands in the 7'th inning of a scoreless game, but not in the way he usually does it. First, he got hit by a pitch to get on base. Then he stole second base on strike 3 swinging by Pat Burrell. Jose Guillen hit a grounder to shortstop. Huff broke for 3'rd and somehow managed to beat Tejada's Fielder's Choice throw. Huff gave 3B Tim Flannery a high five while sitting in the dirt! Jose Uribe then grounded into a force out at 2B that would have been an inning-ending DP had not pinch runner Nate Schierholtz barreled into 2B to break it up. Huff scored on the play, the only run of the game!
Jonathan Sanchez- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 7 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.29. Wow! What a line! Not one likely to settle the debate over whether the GIants should trade or keep Sanchez over the winter. Sanchez didn't have his best fastball tonight, so he just kept throwing breaking stuff up there, figuring it was better to walk batters than to buckle and give them something juicy to hit. Can't argue too much with the results, although 5 IP is awfully early for a starter to leave the game. I guess us Giants fans will just have to accept that Sanchez gave the team and us what was needed tonight and settle the issue of his long term ceiling another day.
Bullpen- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. Brian Wilson once again went more than 1 inning, pitching to last 1.2 IP allowing just one BB, to gain Save #42 on the season. Wilson has an outside chance of breaking Rod "Shooter" Becks Giants all time single season Saves record of 48. Robb Nenn had 43 in 2002 and 45 in 2001.
The win moved the Giants into a tie with the Padres for first place in the NL West, 2.5 games ahead of the Colorado Rockies who crushed the D'Backs 13-4.
Madison Bumgarner takes the mound tomorrow afternoon facing Tim Stauffer in a game that will test the Rookie's mettle in a Fox Game of the Week game in the midst of a gripping pennant race.
