Game Wrap 8/31/ 2024: Marlins 4 Giants 3

A controversial call by the 2B umpire on what looked like a CS play by Patrick Bailey and Tyler Fitzgerald resulted in the Marlins scoring the winning run in a close ballgame.  Key Lines:

Michael Conforto DH- 2 for 4, HR(15).  BA= .231.  Conforto's HR in the 8'th inning narrowed the gap to 4-3 but as so often the case, that's as close as the Giants got.  Teams that depend on walkoff heroics are not going to win many games.  Despite the two hits, Conforto is still batting just .154 over his last 7 games and .204 over his last 15.   He's had a disappointing season and as a pending free agent will almost certainly not be back next season.

Patrick Bailey C- 0 for 4.  BA= .228.  Bailey's bat continues to slump but the D is solid.  He gunned down one runner at 2B on a strike out/throw out.  It looked like he got another CS on former Giant Otto Lopez in the 7'th inning but Tyler Fitzgerald was called for blocking 2B apparently on a technicality.  Fitz' foot was temporarily parallel to the front edge of the bag but he moved it to give Lopez a lane well ahead of the slide.  Lopez ended up coming around to score the winning run.

Jerar "Why Do I Want To Call Him Juan?" Encarnacion RF- 2 for 4.  BA= .259.  We tend to forget Jerar when we list the Giants graduated prospects and future cornerstones but he continues to states his case for a role on next year's team.

Mason Black RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 7.45.  Pretty good start with excellent secondary ratios.  Black is a guy who has an opportunity to make his case for next year's rotation with his performance the rest of this season.

Taylor Rogers LHP- 0.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 2.61.  ERA= 7.45.  Was Taylor's mind on how much his employer wishes he would go away?

Logan Webb RHP tries for a series win today against Darren McCaughan RHP.

Churn Watch:

Austin Warren RHP was optioned to AAA Sacramento to make room on the roster for Mason BlackAndrew Knapp C cleared waivers and was outrighted to AAA Sacramento.

  2. I watched several replays of the supposed caught stealing play. I thought he was safe every time, from all angles. Anyone see something there that I did not see? Thank you! Thanks Doc!

  3. 1 for 7 with RISP: you don't win.
You score 1 ER in 6 innings against an ERA of 5½: you don't win.
Your relief gives up 2 runs in 4 innings: you don't win.
Top of your lineup goes 0-11: you don't win.

Still, the future is not bleak, but it will help to keep Chapman even if they have to overpay him.
Need to get ONE other proven power hitter, but Giants cannot sign one, so will they give up assets (pitching) to get one? Or overpay and hope he's not intimidated by Oracle?

Why would Snell sign with Giants when they can't score runs? It's got to be ultimately distressing to pitch well for 6 or 7 innings and leave without a chance for a win.

Why would any very good pitcher without having to prove something sign with the Giants unless they get an opt out in the contract?
In his 10 starts since he's come back, Snell has allowed just 9 ERs, NEVER over 2 runs in an outing, yet he is only 2-0 because he's left the game with a tie score, often no score, 8 times, or the 'pen has lost his lead.

Giants are 18th in team scoring, a little below "average" — just 2 runs per game in the last 3, 28th in the league.
They are 1st in team LOB: they have the most! Not the least.(https://www.teamrankings.com/mlb/stat/left-on-base-per-game)

Over and over, K&K say on a deep fly ball out by the Giants, it would have been a HR in 25 or 26 or 27 parks, although they are talking about the Oracle dimensions, not the marine layer. What slugger wants to play here?

Can Luciano or Matos help with power? Still young, maybe.

Giants have 2 "sluggers" with MLB Pipeline power ratings of 60 (Eldridge & Jordan) but they are years away.
Tibbs III, Areas, Martin, Christia, and Tejada have 55 power ratings, no one is near. Ceballos ? Diaz? Martin? Hipwell?

Maybe they can do without, but 3-run homers rule.

  4. Bailey’s bat isn’t slumping, he just can’t hit. He’s being exposed with the larger sample size just like last year and just like the minors. He doesn’t have the hit tool. One trick pony providing defense that’s not good enough to overcome the lack of hitting in my opinion.

  5. Herat hasn’t been playing well at all and is not worth a roster spot next year let alone not someone who’s graduating from the giants prospects list. We picked this guy up off the street basically. That’s all you need to know. Stop fooling yourselves. We’re Giants fans, we’re better than thinking Jerar is someone who’s actually going to be on a major league roster next year

  6. Conforto signed with the Giants hoping to rebuild his value after shoulder surgery missing a lot of games. Did playing 1/2 his games at Oracle hurt his ability to put up good hitting stats? Patrick Bailey He's great defensively and pitchers like Logan Webb and even Blake Snell have complemented how they like throwing to him. Snell had nice things to say about Bailey during his recent post game interview. I sense that Bailey is here to stay. They need to figure out whats causing his hitting issues. Do they need to have the discipline to lessen his workload? Did Tom Murphy injury mess up their plans for playing time? Should Bailey give up switch hitting and bat lefthanded only? Catchers have a lot on their plate. I'm hoping that FZ and Bomel address how they are going to correct the hitting in RISP issue. Does the current position player group need to work on grinding out ABS during these situations or is it a personal issue where FZ should acquire more players who grind out abs and are good contacts hitters?

    1. Might they be pressing too hard?
Don't they know as well as the fans that they are failing in that situation?

    2. Maybe the hitters are putting too much pressure on themselves hitting in these situations. Maybe FZ needs to acquire a couple of contact hitters which might help the offense. I forgot A team that had trouble hitting in clutch situations, the 2023 San Diego padres believe it or not., a talented team which included Juan Soto. Their team offensive stats ranked anywhere from 25-30 in clutch situations. Very surprising to watch. Talent might help but its still something that if hitters work hard on making contact to put the ball in play, hitting to the opposite field, maybe they can be more successful next year. Maybe the Giants had too many hitters with high strikeout rates? I don't know. I do know that Manny Machado was a terrible clutch hitter in 2023 but much better in 2024. Padres team much better hitting in clutch situations in 2024.
