Down on the Farm: 9/6/2024

AAA:  Salt Lake City Bees stung the Sacramento River Cats 8-1:

Thairo Estrada 2B- 3 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .433.

I think it's pretty clear the Giants have already decided to not tender a contract to Estrada this winter.  Why do I feel like he's going to be a bargain pickup for some organization?

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels outscored the Akron Rubber Ducks 7-5:

Victor Bericoto RF- 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .261.
Andy Thomas C- 2 for 5.  BA= .229.
Matt Higgins 1B- 2 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .280.
Andrew Kachel 3B- 2 for 5.  BA= .225.
Wil Jensen RHP- 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.60.
Cameron Cotter RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= .338.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds blanked the Vancouver Canadians 3-0:

Cesar Perdomo LHP- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 4.00.
Trent Harris RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.00.
Hunter Dula RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(5).  ERA= 3.19.

Since his ERA reached a peak of 6.04 on 7/21, Perdomo has allowed 9 ER in 31.1 IP(ERA= 2.56).  I saw him pitch in Lake Elsinore at a lower level early in the season and was impressed by his command of a mix of pitches.

A:  San Jose Giants outlasted the Fresno Grizzlies 6-5(11 innings):

Zander Darby PH/2B- 1 for 1, HR(4).  BA= .256.
Robert Hipwell 3B- 1 for 6, HR(5).  BA= .212.
Jack Bresnahan LHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 10.98.

Darby and Hipwell each hit a 3-run HR to account for all of the Giants scoring.  Darby's was a PH HR in the top of the 11'th to give the Giants a 3-run lead. They almost gave it back in the bottom of the inning but hung on for the win.

  1. I like Thairo and its unfortunate that both his wrists were reportedly hurt. Why send him to AAA? My guess is their plan is to sign Ha song Kim to play SS and move Fitz to 2nd base.

    1. I was thinking about this last night and yes, I will be surprised if the Giants don't sign Jung Hoo Lee's good friend Ha Seong Kim. He'll play SS and Fitz will move over to 2B.

    2. Curious why I see so many suggestions that Fitzgerald move from SS to 2B. No doubt he's not Brandon Crawford. But he seems every bit as good or better than Rich Aurelia and playable at SS.

    3. I think it's the expectation the Giants will sign Kim, which remains to be seen but seems like a distinct possibility.

    4. plan is for corner infield spots to be Eldridge & Chapman for most of the rest of this decade, and right now seems decent chance that Fitzgerald is at that tier too. Committing to Kim as well seems blocking with such a quantity of interesting IF prospects below where @Theseus cites Sacramento (& SF) participants this season: Velasquez, Arteaga, Martin, Ahuna, Foster, McDaniel, Level, Reckley, Hipwell, Darby (most of whom bat lefty (or switch) which is pretty cool)

    5. & Szykowny (also lefty)

  2. Gs will rue the day they let Estrada go...seems a class guy, great glove, good BB IQ, some speed and power. Played hurt which tanked his stats, and FZ likes stats over heart in a player.

    1. They will keep him, he can back up all 4 IF positions, some better than others

  3. Estrada case is interesting.
Arguably, the Giants should keep him.
He is paid $4.7MM for this year and arbitration eligible for the 2025 season in which he'll play as a 29 yo.
He has 2 more years until he's an FA.
Giants have 3 established IFers for 2025 but Wade rarely bats against LHP.
Flores has a player option of $3.5MM which he may well take and be backup IF, especially 1B against LH Starters.
Are any of the rest of those who have played IF for SF or Sacramento this year:
Luciano, Schmitt, Wisely, Villar, Aeurback, Wilson, Brooks, Walton, Koss, Bench, Whalen, & Biggio,
clearly a better backup than Estrada?
If the Giants low ball him and he wins with a reasonable number in arbitration, they can J.D. Davis him...

  4. Victor Bericoto kept his head above water in AA but only 10 HR in 450 PA. Needs to find his power or that will be his ceiling.

  5. I'm getting excited about Bryce Eldridge. Wondering if the Giants will play him in the Arizona fall league and maybe a non roster invitee in 2025? I thought they look for long term upgrade at 1st base that would block Eldridge. How about signing Brewers 1st baseman Reese Hoskins for 1 year to go with late night Lamont?

    1. Meant to say short term upgrade ar 1st base that won't block Eldridge

  6. On the pre-game radio show, Marty Lurie said Billy Owens (A’s asst. GM) was the best talent evaluator he’s ever seen and the Giants should put him into a prominent role in their front-office next season. Kerry Crowley, who he was talking to, agreed that if they keep FZ, he should at least be paired with an experienced talent evaluator.

    1. FZ worked with Billy Owens for the A's organization and has said good things about him. There was talk of FZ hiring Owens as GM but then went in a different direction with Scott Harris and later with Pete Putila. I have to assume if FZ was going to hire Owens he already would have done it. And again, it's not going to help FZ to hire an experienced talent evaluator unless FZ himself decides he needs one and is willing to work with them.
