Game Wrap 9/11/2024: Giants 13 Brewers 2

The Giants ran up an 8-0 lead after two innings and coasted to a lopsided win.  Key Lines:

Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 3 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .297.  Fitz continues to state his case to be the Giants SS of the present and future.

Mike Yastrzemski RF- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(15).  BA= .240.  YtY homers for second consecutive game but is still batting .200 over his last 7.

Matt Chapman 3B- 1 for 3, HR(24).  BA= .251.  One more to 25 which was my preseason projection.

Lamonte Wade Jr 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .264.  OBP has slipped a bit to .393.

Jerar Encarnacion DH- 2 for 5, HR(4).  BA= .267.  Jerar's HR went into the RF arcade, unusual for a RH batter.  I think this is the second time he's done it.

Patrick Bailey C- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .235.   Bailey battting .316 over his last 7 games but just .137 over his last 30.

Blake Snell LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 3.52.  Snell coasted with a big lead but threw 95 pitches in 5 IP.

Austin Warren RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.50.  Warren stating his case to be in the mix for next year's staff.

Sean Hjelle RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.68.  Could Hjelle be in the mix for next year's rotation of has he found his niche as a 1-2 inning reliever?

Hayden Birdsong RHP tries to break through his wall tonight facing Frankie Montas RHP.

  1. Tyler Fitzgerald has impressed this year. But baseball is such a crazy inconsistent sport that I’m still not sure that he’s even going to be on the Giants major league roster by the end of next season. Sophomore slumps are real. So are one year wonders and he won’t have close to a full season worth of playing time. I would like to see him finish the season strong and then have a strong and healthy full season next year with the Giants. Then my anxieties can go away. Same with Ramos, who has been impressive with 20 home runs but is scuffling now as his ABs climb and he’s been inconsistent and has disappeared for long stretches in the minors. Meckler hopefully can compete for an OF spot next season if healthy. All-the-way McCray I think strikes out too much right now and that hit bat gets exposed in the long term so I think he’s a future 4th OF with speed and defense and a little pop but ultimately he does have the potential to be a starter, it’s just doubtful when you consider how few prospects of the Giants actually pan out.

  2. I would say it is time to say good-bye to Michael Conforto. He was paid $18 million each of the past two years. He struck out 4 times the day before and is not in the lineup when the Giants score 13. I would say it was worth the gamble when the Giants signed him as he some good years with the Mets, but not at that price. Let the young guys play out the season.

  3. I wonder what Snell's real value may be in terms of dollars and length for a contract. While his numbers as of late look good, his in ability to go deep into games is a concern IMO and has to impact his value. Going to be tricky again to determine what a contract offer should be for him, which is why he may have been challenged this year to get one. I think the Giants need to tread somewhat carefully for his services as someone is probably going to overpay for him. He has value as a starter but would like to see more workhorse attributes in him for what he is probably going to command as a FA

  4. Has this been written about somewhere before?
"Giants pitcher Logan Webb attributes struggles at 2024 All-Star Game to crippling hangover"

Pretty unprofessional, he sorta laughs it off, but that's not a good thing.

  5. Gotta love McCray's youth, his play in the field, his speed, and his hot start in August.
    Since August 28th in 39 PAs, he's .154/.154/.359/.513 with 15 SO's and 0 Walks.
He got a hit yesterday with the Giants up 10-1, but he didn't move any runners, and snuffed one rally with 2 on and 1 out, hitting into a DP.
He has struck out 32 times with 3 Walks in 81 PAs. If he really is a power hitter, and he is hitting with power when he connects, a 40% K-rate might be acceptable.
Given the Giants are now looking at their young players and McCray is an important one of them, but there are others including even younger Matos and Luciano plus Meckler who is hitting well in AAA.
