Down on the Farm: 9/22/2024

AAA:  Sugarland Space Cowboys defeated the Sacramento River Cats 8-3:

Andrew Knapp 1B- 2 for 4, HR(10).  BA= .285.
Christian Koss SS- 2 for 3, HBP, SB(5).  BA= .257.
Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 10 K's.  ERA= 5.42.

The River Cats missed the AAA playoffs so today's game ends their season.  Carson Whisenhunt finishes his season strong after a rough first half allowing 2 ER in 11 IP with 16 K's and 4 BB's over his final two starts.  Add his name to the Giants SP depth chart for next season. Considering he didn't pitch much his junior season of college ball and just 66 IP of pro ball before this season and how tough the PCL is on pitchers, he is right about where you would hope he would be by this time in his pro career.

  1. Dr. B what's your ranking for most likely to be in SFG rotation '26? Presumably Webb, Harrison & Ray are top 3 most likely (I think in that order) and then there's: Birdsong, Roupp, , Black, Wisenhunt, McDonald, Hicks, Winn, Beck, Bertand, Whitman, Choate, other Carsons, Sinacola, Cumming, Murphy, Carmouche, Mercedes, Lonsway, Wynja (I hear that last guy actually grew on a tree!)

    1. As we all know too well, pitchers are subject to injuries. Anybody's guess when and where they will strike. Webb has been incredibly durable but the cumulative innings are piling up. The order you have them in is as good as any I could come up with. Organizational pitching is stronger in the upper minors as the last two drafts have been hitter heavy as have recent international signing classes.

    2. Other than Webb, Winn, and McDonald, aren't they all drafted or traded for by Zaidi?

  2. With all that upper-level & majors starting pitching depth, does the team consider giving a free agent a multi-year contract this off-season? All of those names are signed beyond '27 except Ray (2 more seasons) and Hicks (3 more seasons), and there'salso team-control contract situations through that period by Doval, Walker, Rodriguez, Miller, Hjelle, Crawford (& Bivens too?)

    1. They already agreed to a long term contract to Matt Chapman and I expect they will add at least one more longterm contract this offseason.
