Game Wrap 9/1/2024: Marlins 7 Giants 5

Logan Webb was dealing with what looked like elite stuff and a 2-run lead then hit a wall in the 5'th inning after he misfired a potential GIDP ball and gave up 6 runs over the next two innings and went on to take the Loss.  Key Lines:

Mike Yastrzemski RF- 1 for 4, HR(12), BB.  BA= .239.  YtY's HR came on the second pitch he saw leading off the Giants half of the first inning.  He later led off the 5'th inning with a walk and scored on a ground out.

Logan Webb RHP- 6 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 0 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 13/0.  ERA= 3.43.  Webb was electric through 4 innings, so much so that before the #9 hitter got a groundball single in the 3'rd inning I was already thinking no-hitter.  After Griffin Conine singled on another groundball to lead off the 5'th, Otto Lopez lined out.  Jose Devers then hit a comebacker Webb fielded cleanly with plenty of time to complete an inning ending GIDP.  Instead he threw high to Tyler Fitzgerald who managed to get a tag on Conine but had no chance to get the trailing runner.  The next 3 batters went GB single, LD single, 3-run HR.  Poof!  The Giants trailed 4-2 and never caught up.  Was Webb distracted by his errant throw?  Did he run out of gas?  After giving up those 4 runs in the 5'th he gave up 2 more in the 6'th.

The Giants get Labor Day off before hosting the D'Backs on Tuesday with TBD facing TBD.

  1. webb hasn't been great the past couple of outings and it's something to keep close tabs on in the next start. i would consider the idea of shutting down webb for final two weeks and the season lost. he's been a great workhorse but, i think giving him some early R&R might be beneficial for 2025.

  2. “Was Webb distracted by his errant throw?“ He appeared to be. Perhaps the throw to second, affected his muscles and/or nerves in some way. He surely doesn’t practice throws like that.

  3. Nice day to take off and regroup, just don't look at the schedule: 24 games left — every opponent, at this moment, is still a contender although St Louis likely will be eliminated before the last series of the season.
Snell is the only pitcher who will be a Free Agent and playing for a new contract — just about everyone else, Starter and Reliever, is seemingly gassed.
This will likely become an even uglier season.

On the bright side, for all those who have been calling for a tear down and rebuild, you will have it!
The 4 Free Agents (5 including Flores) will leave unless they are individually overpaid to stay and be part of the "rebuild."
Chapman is probably worth overpaying some, but with his good year and the way he plays 3B, he won't be cheap.
Snell will be prohibitively expensive, but maybe worth it but why wouldn't he want to go to a contender?
Canha, Conforto, Flores — who cares?

Of the Arb eligible, only YtY will even approach $10M, and he's worth having as a 4th OFer, isn't he? He still plays a mean RF, and a 2+ WAR (B-R, Fangraphs is just under 2) is worth that for his matuity and calm approach.

Pitching: everyone is young and cheap except Taylor Rogers, and he's not grossly overpaid. Could trade him if they pay some of his $12MM.

No matter: next year will be a rebuild — there is little to tear down.
And the Giants have lots of money to spend — who can they coax to play in SF?

  4. Of course Webb was distracted by his errant throw but more so on the way things have been going for the last 3 years. It may have started when they didn’t resign Gausman who Webb respected and benefited from. He probably still had faith in the vision but after last year he has been showing some frustrations with the way the team is run. Earlier this year I think he referred to the way they were playing as dogs#!t.

I’ve said it and others have said it but being where we have been as a team over the last 3 years is like being in purgatory. You don’t know if you are bad or good and stay average for years and years trying to figure it out. Meanwhile other teams are spending tons of money with mixed results or rebuilding by sucking for 3-4 years.

I prefer the sucking route myself! All jokes aside if you look back at the 2020 and 2021 drafts there are more misses than hits and maybe the only 2 players FZ could have gotten and missed on were Corbin Carrol and Jackson Merrill.

Then we have a historic season and draft last in 2022! 2023 looks like a great pick and for what it’s worth, Tibbs is now our number 2 prospect according to the Giants website.

I can’t forgive all the bad decisions that have been made either and I still don’t like the way they do business with the churn and how they have handled the trade deadline. They have however put themselves in a really good position if they can spend a lot of money this offseason.

Cut everyone who makes any money at all (Including Yaz and possibly Wade) and sign Chapman and Snell to come back. That is probably going to cost around $300 million total or more so they have to get creative after that.

Instead of Soto or Alonso just get Santander and get Kim to play SS. That’s another $300 million maybe less. That’s 4 key players for what it would cost for Soto to come here. We have enough to work with around those and more coming. Even if we didn’t make the playoffs next year this would be a fun team to watch!

    Lee CF
    Kim SS
    Fitzgerald 2B
    Santander
    Ramos LF
    Chapman 3B
    Bailey C
    Encarnacion/Matos
    Luciano/Schmidt/Wisely/Mccray/Meckler

    Snell
    Webb
    Ray
    Hicks/Birdsong/Black/Winn/Hjelle
    Harrison

    Doval/Walker
    Tyler Rogers
    Miller
    Rouppe
    Crawford?

Good mix of up and coming and better than average talent within the lineup while developing rookies at the bottom. Rotation would be potentially best in baseball like FZ claimed. Tons of bullpen depth and room to shuffle with no other big contracts to worry about. Get it done FZ!!
