Game Wrap 9/22/2024: Giants 2 Royals 0

A triple by Grant McCray keyed a 2-run rally in the second inning which was all the runs Blake Snell and 3 Giant relievers needed to complete the shutout win and sweep the Royals.  Key Lines:

Grant McCray CF- 1 for 3, 3B.  BA= .212.  McCray followed a 1-out single by Jerar Encarnacion DH with a triple up the R-CF alley to drive in the Giants first run.  McCray then scored the second run on Brett Wisely's 2-out single.   McCray's triple was notable for him fighting back from a 0-2 count to get a pitch he could hit on a 2-2 count.

Blake Snell LHP- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 3.12.  Snell continues his dominant second half.  At 88 pitches, he probably could have gone another inning if the Giants were contending for the postseason.

Sean Hjelle RHP, Tyler Rogers RHP and Ryan Walker RHP pitched a scoreless inning each with Hjelle striking out the side and Walker recording his 9'th Save.

The Giants start their final homestand against the D'Backs tomorrow evening with Hayden Birdsong RHP facing Eduardo Rodriguez LHP.

  1. I was talking to a couple friends who are Giant fans, but were talking about Blake Snell and that the Giants should not sign him. They did not think Snell had a good year. I disagree. I think the Giants should sign Snell if they can. Snell, Webb and Ray to anchor the pitching staff. Then we have Harrison, Birdsong, Roupp, Mason Black and Tristan Beck all in line for the 4 and 5 spots. Pitchers get hurt, Sign Snell and have insurance. The young guys should keep their workload down anyway.

    1. I would be happy if they extended Snell but if they can re-allocate Snell's money to convince Juan Soto to come here, I think their pitching would still be OK.

  2. I agree with you. If it is Snell or Soto, I definitely would want Soto. Soto in the lineup would make everyone hit better. A Soto signing will have to be a long one Iwould think. He will be 26 going into next year. I wonder if the Giants could structure a deferred salary like Ohtani is getting.

  3. As Krukow might say, "There is none chance" of signing Soto.
OTOH, after this terrific last road trip, 5-1 against AL contenders, if the Giants can go 4-2 against AZ and StL, they will finish the season 81-81, an accomplishment thought an Impossible Dream just a week ago, something to build on.
Giants have $90M+ in salaries coming off the books in 2025: Snell's, Soler's, Conforto's, Canha's, Flores' (at least $5M), Estrada's, YtY's (if for Soto — yes, so many OFers), and even Wade (ill advised).
They could also afford a power SS like Adames (32 HR this year, 150 career, and counting plus CAA Sports agency, not Boras).
Roll the dice! Farhan's last gasp!

  4. Corbin Burnes might be a better target than Snell or Soto, no?

  5. Giants can go after a star hitter at any position except 1B and 3B and maybe CF. We have solid players or prospects in all positions and we need one or two stars.
