Game Wrap 8/6/0219: Nationals 5 Giants 3

Conner Menez got roughed up in his second MLB start and Steven Vogt's bid for a game-tying HR fell just short as did the Giants comeback bid.  Key Lines:

Kevin Pillar- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .245.  Pillar is hitting .368 over his last 7 games.  He scored 2 of the Giants 3 runs in this one.

Pablo Sandoval PH/3B- 2 for 3, 2 2B.  BA= .271.  Pabs turned on an inside pitch and drove it down the RF line for one double then went the other way to drive one into the L-CF alley for his second double accounting for 2 of the Giants 3 runs.

Conner Menez LHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.73.  Menez probably has good enough stuff to trust it, but as Kruk pointed out, he needs to learn to stay out of the strike zone when he has 2-strikes on the batter.  Learning experience.

Jandel Gustave RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.  Gustave finally got his first K since being called up, but remained unscored upon in 6 innings over 3 appearances.  Like his mid-90's FB.

Williams Jerez LHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 2.25.  Jerez should be in the majors to stay for awhile now.  Need that 3'rd LHP in the pen these days.

Despite the Loss, the Giants remained 3.5 games behind in the Wild Card race with the Phillies currently holding onto the second WC spot.

The Giants need Shaun Anderson to step his game up a notch against RHP Joe Ross tomorrow in a bid to avoid a sweep to the Nationals.

The Giants finally got tired of watching Joe Panik twist in the wind and cut him down with a DFA.  He might hook on as a sub somewhere since he will only cost the signing team a prorated fraction of the league minimum salary.  A guy with Panik's tools and skill set has to be able to beat the shifts, hit 'em where they ain't as Wee Willie Keeler used to say.  He wasn't able to do that and he just didn't have enough power to be effective hitting the ball in the air either.  Panik was a good Giant.  They might not have won the 2014 World Series were it not for him. Wish him the best.

  1. i'd like to see gustave tried as an opener with the starters struggling right now, menez will have a bit of a leash but, it may be time to consider using a four-man rotation and bullpenning every fifth game.

  2. Joe Panik took the fall for all the underperforming Giants yesterday because he has no future contract and the other “core” players do. His .235 BA is nothing to cheer about, but Posey at .259 is the only one with a contract batting above .250!
Had Belt (.235), Crawford (.223), Longoria (.239), and Posey himself not be owed so many millions of dollars, there would be grieving fans by the millions as the golden boys of 2014 would all be looking for work.
Crawford @ .091 for the Giants last 7 games has fallen off the face of the earth as Belt, Posey, and Longoria also faceplant. Ironically, Panik @ .364 (6 games) has actually looked very good this week compared to the “safe” veterans of the last winning season.
This is not an apology for Joe although his go-get-it demeanor will be missed. And not an indictment of Zaidi for not doing more: the Giants overperformed last month handcuffing the FO.
Yes, they are only 2.5 games out of the Wild Card but they also are only 2.5 games ahead of the 13th place Rockies which is the direction they are headed and will get there unless the other heroes of 2014 get their schtick together pronto!

    1. Excellent analysis. Sabean thought he had the Big Red Machine or that fabled Dodger infield from the 70's - but we see early expiration dates on the entire infield. The more games that the team loses this year will only make it easier to DFA Crawford and Belt, who are liabilities and rally-killers if they remain in lineup.

  3. I believe The Core is finished, has been for awhile. They do show spurts of their Old Self but only when well rested with Pine Time. Z is handcuffed by these contracts and the emotional irrational Fans but he will work his way around these obstacles. The Younger we get the better we get!
