Down on the Farm: 8/10/2019

AAA  Nashville Sounds drowned out the Sacramento River Cats 13-3:

Mike Gerber CF- 1 for 4, HR(24).  BA= .316.
Mauricio Dubon 2B- 1 for 4, HR(17).  BA= .291.
Zach Green 3B- 1 for 4, HR(24).  BA= .291.
Justin Haley RHP- 2.2 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 23.63.
Tyler Rogers RHP- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 4.26.

3 solo HR's accounted for the River Cats runs.  If Mauricio Dubon can step up and be the starting 2B for the Giants next year, Farhan gets almost all of the payroll $$ that would have gone to Joe Panik to allocate somewhere else.  Justin Haley gets roughed up in his Giants organizational debut.  He was signed as a FA on 8/1 after being waived by the Samsung Lions of the KBO on 7/25.  He is 6'5", 230 lbs.  He is reported to be a standard 3-pitch guy with a low 90's FB.

AA  Bowie Baysox blanked the Richmond Flying Squirrels 1-0(7 innings, Game 1 of DH):

Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .286.
Jalen Miller 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .212.
Ryan Howard 3B- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .207.
Caleb Baragar LHP- 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.70.

Caleb Baragar saw his ERA rise from a nadir of 2.31 on May 29 to 3.99 after his last start.  This was just his 3'rd QS out of his last 11.   2 hits for Heliot Ramos....more on him after the Game 2 summary.

AA  Bowie Baysox downed the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-3:

Heliot Ramos DH- 2 for 3, HR(1), BB.  BA= .400.
Joey Bart C- 3 for 4.  BA= .250.
Jalen Miller 2B- 0 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .211.
Ryan Howard SS- 2 for 3.  BA= .213.
Sean Hjelle RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 9.00.
Sam Wolff RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.99.

The EL tends to grind hitters down, but so far Heliot Ramos has not missed a beat since his promotion from San Jose.  Joey Bart finds some traction in the EL.  If Heliot Ramos sustains his success in the EL, gotta consider moving him over Bart to #1 on the Giants prospect list due to a significant age difference and more consistent performance at the plate.  Sean Hjelle gets roughed up in his AA debut.  Oh, and the Giants released Jonah Arenado presumably to make room on the Squirrels roster for Ramos/Bart.

A+  Modesto Nuts topped the San Jose Giants 10-3:

NTSH.

A  Augusta Greenjackets swarmed over the Rome Braves 10-7(7 innings, Game 1 of DH):

Diego Rincones RF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .294.
Frankie Tostado 1B- 3 for 5, 3B.  BA= .261.
Tyler Flores DH- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .194.
Ricardo Genoves C- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .250.
Kai-Wei Teng RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 6.75.

*********************************************************************************

A  Rome Braves smothered the Augusta Greenjackets 1-0(8 innings, Game 2 of DH):

Seth Corry LHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 12 K's.  ERA= 1.64.
Preston Walker RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.00.

Seth Corry continues to be too good for the SAL, but the Giants reportedly have no plans for a late promotion preferring to let him finish the season on a high note.  Seems like maybe they should just shut him down in that case.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes outscored the Hillsboro Hops 12-9:

Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .284.
Hunter Bishop CF- 1 for 4, BB.  BA= .222.
Sean Roby DH- 2 for 3, HR(2), BB.  BA- .338.
Matt Martorano C- 1 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .271.
Carter Aldrete 3B- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .227.
Conner Nurse RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.19.

Not sure what the deal with Conner Nurse pitching 1 inning is.  Injury?  Experiment with Opener role?  Limiting innings? Rehab?(Per MCC it was a rain delay!)

Rookie AZL  Giants Orange and Giants Black were both idle.

DSL  Giants pounded the Tigers2 10-3:

Luis Matos CF- 2 for 4, HR(7), BB.  BA= .355.
Rayner Santana DH- 2 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .302.
Jose Mullings RHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 4.98.

Luis Matos was held out of both games of a DH on 8/9.  Apparently the rest did him good as he comes back with a strong game here.  He is hitting just .244 over his last 10 games but went a combined 0 for 10 in the first 2 games of that stretch.  He now has an 8 game hit streak in which he is 10 for 31.  Yeah, I guess that's a slump by his standards.  Gotta be intrigued by the numbers Rayner Santana has put up in his age 16 season(he turns 17 on 8/15).

  1. Read an interesting article on NBC Sports Bay area where a scouting supervisor gave honest assessment of a handful of Giants and A's players. To summarize what he said about Joey Bart: The future! A very good player. He has a cannon arm and should hit 25-30 dingers. Not MVP type like Posey but fans will love him for the next decade. That's good enough for me, can't wait to see this kid in the show!

  2. MLB can't figure Luis Matos: @17 yo, his DSL line for 2019 is near video game numbers (sans the 2 games when he was 0-10).
160 pounder is even hitting for power in the DSL.
And he's the "least" of the top 3 international signings of 2018 behind Shortstop Marco Luciano and Outfielder Jario Pomares.
    What a threesome!
    Here's the question:
MLB midseason prospects has raves for 2019 from arm to speed to hitting, even to power but his Scouting grades are:
    Hit: 50 | Power: 45 | Run: 55 | Arm: 55 | Field: 55 | Overall: 40
    How does that work?

  3. Luciano, Pomares & Cannon have been promoted to Salem-Keizer. Doc, can you put that into perspective for us? Cannon is 21 y.o. so Salem-Keizer is age appropriate, but for Luciano (17 y.o.) and Pomares (19 y.o.) the assignment seems impressively aggressive.

    1. They did the same thing with Villalona way back when. I like these late season previews for prospects doing well. Hopefully Luciano will see San Jose before he turns 19.

  4. I went to the River Cats game last night and had a couple of observations. That ballpark is a launching pad and there were a lot of bombs hit. Haley didnt top 88 mph at any point and did not look sharp. He was inconsistent with most of his pitches but worst of all he missed high in the zone a lot with that 88 mph cheeseball. Dubon’s HR was down the left field line off a lefty and he didnt do much with his other at bats. In fact it pretty much looked like everyone in the lineup was trying to do one thing and one thing only which was go yard. Jaylin Davis swung out of his shoes most at bats and didnt make a lot of contact either. Gerbers was a first pitch fastball if i remember correctly so my biggest concern was that it didnt seem like they were refining skills at all or working on anything in particular it seemed very clear that every player thinks they need to hit homers to get noticed. Sad if you ask me that the game has turned into this. Thats really why they hit 3 bombs and all were solo shots.
