Down on the Farm: 8/8/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats defeated the Memphis Redbirds 5-2:

Abiatal Avelino 2B- 2 for 4, SB(14).  BA= .287.
Francisco Pena C- 1 for 4, HR(15).  BA= .318.
Joe McCarthy RF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .250.
Enderson Franco RHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 5.98.

AA  Altoona Curve blanked the Richmond Flying Squirrels 2-0:

Gio Brusa LF- 3 for 4, 2B, 3B.  BA= .252.
Chase Johnson RHP- 3.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB 2 K's.  ERA= 4.34.
Garrett Williams LHP- 3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.68.
Caleb Simpson RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.66.

Some exciting news for the Flying Squirrels fans.   Joey Bart, Heliot Ramos and Sean Hjelle all promoted from San Jose.  These promotions don't mean much for this season, but give the players a preview of next season and give them an early acclimation to the league.  It also guarantees eligibility for the Arizona Fall League.  Bart and Ramos are definitely candidates as top prospects plus they missed out on PA's early in the season with injuries.

A+ San Jose Giants were idle.

A  Rome Braves smothered the Augusta Greenjackets 7-0:

Jacob Gonzalez 1B- 2 for 4.  BA= .237.

Jacob Gonzalez had the only 2 hits in the game for the GJ's.  Simon Whiteman drew two walks.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes edged out the Hillsboro Hops 3-2:

Logan Wyatt 1B- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .295.
Harrison Freed LF- 2 for 4, SB(1).  BA= .238.
Hunter Bishop CF- 0 for 1, 3 BB.  BA= .200.
Jasier Herrera RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.80.
Ben Madison RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.04.
Preston Tucker RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's, Save(4).  ERA= 1.46.

Jasier Herrera has a successful NWL debut.  Weird first pro season for Hunter Bishop who has more walks(27) than K's(25) or Hits(15) across 2 levels.  He might want to re-evaluate his approach during the offseason.

Rookie AZL  Giants Black shut out the Royals 2-0:

George Bell LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .273.
Jairo Pomares RF- 2 for 4.  BA= .378.
Chris Wright LHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.24.
Ivan Armstrong RHP- 4 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 6.91.
Jesus Reyes RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 6.19.
Brooks Crawford RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 7.36.

Ivan Armstrong is part of the promising DSL pitching contingent from last season who struggled in the transition to Arizona.  Several of them seem to be finding themselves here late in the season.  It that trend continues, it's a huge boost to the overall strength of the farm system.

  1. Sacramento @ 63-53 are not only leading their division but outclassing the AAA Dodger affiliate who @ 54-61 resides last in their division.
You might ask how could that be since every River Cat who stands tall is sent to SF before he can sit down again.
Consider yesterday's winning lineup starting against Memphis:
Avelino, Dubon, Davis, Green, Pena, Adames, McCarthy, Michael, and Franco.
None of them started in the Giants' organization, and all except Avelino were acquired this year by Zaidi.

  2. Logan Webb might get a start next week..........a little birdie told me.

He was moved up to Sacramento August 3rd and had a BS that day (!) giving up a 2-out 3-run homerun in the bottom of the 8th.
Last had 2/3 scoreless inning August 5th.
    He is 14/16 in Saves.
Given he's on the 40-man roster, perhaps he should get a taste of Big Closing this year.
