Game Wrap 8/1/2019: Phillies 10 Giants 2

Dereck Rodriguez was lit up for 7 Runs(4 ER) in 3 IP and the Giants never had a chance in this one.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 4.  BA= .236.  Singles and walks are OK at the top of the order, but Belt is hitting just .148 over his last 7 games and .197 over his last 15.  Pretty hard to keep the OBP up with that kind of BA.  The Giants July resurgence seemed to start when Belt moved to the top of the order.  The recent struggles started with his slump.

Mike Yastrzemski LF- 2 for 5.  BA= .277.  YtY is the Giants hottest hitter.  .385 over his last 7 games, .368 over his last 15 and .305 over his last 30.

Steven Vogt C- 2 for 4.  BA= .286.  Maybe Vogt is hotter than YtY?  .500 over his last 7 games, .375 over his last 15 and .328 over his last 30.

Brandon Crawford SS- 0 for 1.BB.  BA= .231.  Crawford made a 2-out error in the 2'nd inning leading to 3 unearned runs which started the downward spiral for DRod.  He later jammed his right shoulder diving for a ball and came out of the game.  He'll be re-evaluated but it sounds like an IL stint is a possibility.

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 3 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 5.32.  The error hurt, but DRod also did not pitch very well.  No encouraging secondary stats to grasp here.  Giants will have to look for rotation help somewhere else.

Andrew Suarez LHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 10.66.  Suarez is not looking like the rotation piece the Giants need either.

Sam Selman LHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 9.00.   Selman finally makes his MLB debut.  He put together a terrific season for the River Cats.  He should get an extended look to see if his stuff plays in the majors. His first MLB K came on a nice diving changeup.

Jandel Gustave RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 0.00.  Gustave his a hard thrower who had mixed results for Sacramento.  Did well enough here to hang around a while longer.

*********************************************************************************

The Loss left the Giants 2.5 games behind 3 teams, Phillies, Nationals and Cubs, vying for 2 Wild Card playoff spots.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants move on to Coors Field where the Rockies will be eager to avenge the 4 game sweep of a couple of weeks ago. Shaun Anderson gets the Start against Peter Lambert in game 1.

*********************************************************************************

Alex Dickerson was placed on the IL with an oblique strain.  He was replaced on the Active Roster with Sam Selman.  Scooter Gennett will likely be added to the Active Roster today.   Does that mean Joe Panik has played his last game as a Giant or will they swap out a pitcher(likely Dereck Rodriguez or Andrew Suarez) and put Gennet in LF to replace the injured Dickerson?

Someone asked where the RH OF bat and SP's will come from now that the Trade Deadline has passed.  Listen up here, team!  The Giants kept Madison Bumgarner and Will Smith to keep butts in seats, or maybe Farhan thinks he can give them QO's and get better prospects out of compensation draft picks, but make no mistake.  Farhan ran up the white flag on the season at the trade deadline.  You don't just call up guys from AAA and replace what Pomeranz, Melancon and Dyson were giving the the Giants in the bullpen.  On top of that, Farhan did not address the need for a major RH bat in the OF and another good SP.  As for who we might see trying to fill those roles, Joey Rickard will probably get his shot and the new guy, Jaylin Davis was acquired for some reason. On the pitching side, I think Conner Menez will get a longer look. Could we see Logan Webb in SF before the end of the season?  Those guys are not likely to lead this team into the postseason.

I'm not saying Farhan did a bad job at the Trade Deadline.  He did a fantastic job within the parameters he was likely given by ownership.  It's just the narrative that he somehow threaded a needle and kept the Giants competitive for this while building for the future is likely false.

  1. Several observations.

    1. Rodriguez and Suarez have no business on this team. Each turn into Roman candles every time they get the ball.

    2. Menez was impressive in his first start. Has he not earned another? Certainly before Rodriguez gets another start.

    3. Austin and Green are out machines. Can the team not find that production from Shaw and Longoria (once he comes back)?

    4. When will Longoria come back? We need his offense right now.

    5. About time they put Dickerson on the IL. Hopefully he'll be consistently healthy once he returns.

    1. menez should be back up and i think rodriguez has pitched better out of the bullpen this season. suarez may need to be waived at some point.

  2. Dyson was given the ball in the 9th inning with a three run lead to protect - faced 4 batters - could not record an out. Opposition ties the game and win in extras. Wow. Off to a rough start!!

    1. The Marlins. I followed it as it was happening. There's a chance that he might revert to what he was when the Rangers cut him. If the twins end up cutting him after a few more of these.... maybe he comes back. You never know.

    2. he must have felt the pressure for sure - but for crying out loud your team trades for you gives up a good prospect and then SPLAT. Reminds me of Melancon's first game but I think he gave up a walk-off HR. Bum hits two HR's on opening day and then the $80 or whatever Million dollar arm loses the game with handful of hittable pitches

  3. Hope you don't take this wrong, but I totally disagree he waived the flag nor am I as down on the way he is building for the future.

If your point is we were not massive buyers, I agree. However, we're a .500 team and there was no one person who makes us the Astros plus getting rid of the number of pieces it would have taken us to get there would have been expensive and would have annoyed the team and fan base given they got to .500. So big buying makes no sense.

He did make two small buys, in Scooter and Dubon (now ranked 8 in our system)--one is for today (maybe if he's healthy) and one is for tomorrow. They both give us a chance to be competitive in the WC (and with Crawford hurt, maybe more so than we could have anticipated). Beck shows up at 18 in the system too so you can't really take issue he helped in the pen.

Finally, as to what he sold, he sold from a position of strength. Not just the pen, but also from the right side. We have few guys on the left that could replace Watson (Bergen but he's not completely healthy) and no one to replace Smith on either side (Dyson was tried and wasn't consistent). Moronta is young and untried. Gott is kind of in the same boat. Pomeranz was a starter moved into the pen to get value; I don't view trading him for prospects as anything other than making lemonade. Dyson was good but has his bad moments, was older, and wasn't cheap. Black was a guy who oozed potential and never seemed to get there (reminds me of Strickland). In the face of the three guys we've traded, you have Selman, Bergen, Adon, Gustave, Jerez, Abad and Coonrod. Yeah, there is a roll of the dice there but you have a number of guys who can step in so hitting on 3 (less than 50%) is decent. Plus if it is Selman, Jerez or Bergen, we'd actually be a tad more balanced (but I would not have been a fan of trading Watson or Smith and diluting our strength on the side hoping to get there).

No, he didn't sell MadBum or Smith (Smith for good reasons noted above). If you sell MadBum you need a starter to step in (Pomeranz wasn't good as a starter and you're rolling a lot on Menez if you do that). To me that would have been a way bigger surrender. Plus, not sure we get value there although the way Farhan pulled off trades, maybe better than everyone was saying. However, we can certainly give both those guys QOs and that builds too.

One place where I see a tad of risk on being diluted is Pomeranz had the potential to start or go longer. Rodriguez and Suarez have not shown that potential. But a guy like Menez might be able to (and less risk than replacing MadBum out right). I see that as more risky since you don't necessarily have as many bodies you could through at that to see what sticks. Still would like to see Suarez get his act in gear and he's still decently young.

Net net--we shored up a huge hole (2b), got maybe a good pitcher (Beck) and some lotto picks (primarily outfield, which might also come in handy now given injuries) and all it really cost us that there is no clear replacement is a long reliever. While maybe you could have asked for more, I think he did an amazing job and the narrative is spot on.

  4. i think duggar could be up with the team with the injuries in the outfield and it could be a good opportunity what he has learned since being sent down.

  5. Even if Scooter is 2019's Scutaro, Longo comes back where he left off, Yaz and Pablo continue to "lead" the team, and the platoons (old v new) work out, you can't compete for 162 games with just 2 reliable starters.
Eight others have started games and only the rook Menez in his single appearance comported himself well albeit 2 dingers in 5 innings pushed a scuffling offense to a wo in 12 innings.

  6. You make great points, but unless Scooter turns into Marco Scutaro 2012, Farhan did nothing to improve the team playing on the field. I think you agree with Doc more than you disagree. Lets wait a few years and this could be a moment of his genius, or nothing more than selling high and saving some money.

  7. Austin DFAed. Duggar recalled. Rodriguez optioned. Gennett activated. This all works for me. Now find some room for Menez.

  8. Doc, you might be right that ownership might have been involved giving Zaidi parameters. Wouldn't surprise me if ownership didn't want Bum traded in the end. That said I'm ok that they decided to do something and ended up selling. Yes, they're only 3 games back of the wild card, but their chances are slim making the playoffs, they're only a 500 team, and I heard enough pundits say they should sell. Keith Law said Zaidi thinks towards the future when he makes moves anyway. Beat writers have said Zaidi was brought in to rebuild the team hopefully quickly, so it makes sense what happend at the deadline. I still think the Melancon trade was great, even though they could use him. The Dyson trade surprised me, but maybe Zaidi wasn't planning to bring him back next due to his salary and got 3 prospects back. Not sure what all the fuss is regarding Pomeranz. He was throwing well in limited bullpen duty.but they got a good 2nd base prospect Dubon. Let's hope they start playing better, they need to get healthy with Longoria and Dickerson banged up.
