Down on the Farm: 8/19/2019

AAA  Albuquerque Isotopes burned the Sacramento River Cats 4-1:

Mike Gerber RF- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(26).  BA= .317.
Aramis Garcia C- 2 for 4.  BA= .272.
Kyle Barraclough RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 31.50.

Mike Gerber deserves some kind of an award for perseverance as he has raked all season for the River Cats.  He didn't look good in a MLB trial, but it was a miniscule sample size.  Does he ever get another shot?  It will take awhile for Kyle Barraclough to whittle that ERA down.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels escaped the Erie Seawolves 7-3(10 innings):

Johneshwy Fargas RF- 1 for 3, BB, Sac.  BA= .251.
Heliot Ramos DH- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .205.
Joey Bart C- 2 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .206.
Jacob Heyward PH- 1 for 1, HR(10).  BA= .219.
Ryan Halstead RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.52.
Sam Wolff RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.83.

Jacob Heyward hit a walkoff grand slam HR in the bottom of the 10'th inning.  Hopefully this game gives Heliot Ramos and Joey Bart some traction, but IMO, the point of these late callups is not really what they do this season but what they will hopefully do next season.

  1. Gerber is in a pinch!
On one side he has YtY, Pillar, Dick!, and Slater
On the other he has Rickard, Davis, and Shaw
And on the mend (for 2020) he has Duggar.
Like YtY was 'waaay down on the Oriole (!) OFer list, Gerber's got the same problem with the Giants.
At least he doesn't have Joe, Williamson, Parra, and Reed, but there is also McCarthy now.
Plus downstream: Ramos, Bishop, Carnario, Pomares, Fabian, Matos, McCray, Quinn, Rincones, and some lottery picks.
Was someone saying the Giants have an OF problem? Too many?

  2. River Cat outfield yesterday was Jaylin Davis (LF), Joey Rickard (CF), and Mike Gerber (RF) with Chris Shaw off the bench pinch hitting.
OTOH, the OFers only got 2 hits and Sac lost.

Harrison Freed from a slow start at S-K (.198/.242/.337) after an outstanding AZL (.440/.500/.680), has quietly made a lot of noise with 12-35 3HRs in his last 10.
From a lesser college program (Butler) and a 13th round pick, his uninspiring early S-K probably kept him there when he could be helping Augusta.

  3. Tuesday thoughts on the Giants:
How important is this Cub series? SF's not given much chance with the Cubs being so good at home, but, the Giants are good on the road! So there!
    1. If the Cardinals (8-2, 22-12 since 7/12) have joined the Nationals (49-25 since 5/23) in the never-look-back category, Chicago becomes one of the teams the Giants will have to pass and this is their last shot head-to-head.
    2. The Giants have a tough schedule for their last 37 games -- losing this series will hurt.
    3. Matchups:
    Beede-Hamels not-so-good for us;
    Rodríguez-Darvish 50-50 at best;
Samardzija-Hendricks Shark needs a good day.
Is 2 of 3 is possible.
    4. Here's a quadfecta for us: If
    the Giants beat the Cubs,
the Red Sox beat the Phillies,
the Indians beat the Mets, AND
    the Cards beat the Brewcrew,
the race for the 2nd WC is really tight:
    2.5 games separate 5 teams!
If AZ also wins for a quinfecta, 3 games separate 6 teams for WC 2!
