Game Wrap 8/18/2019: D'Backs 6 Giants 1

This game turned on 1 missed defensive play in the first inning.  From then on, the Giants were never in contention.  Key Lines:

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 3.72.  So, Bummy got two quick outs in the first inning, but the a double/Error put a runner at 3B and a walk put runners at first and third.  Adam Jones came up and hit a sinking liner to CF that Pillar tried to make one of his patented diving catches on.  He came up an inch short and the ball skidded past him to the warning track for a 2-run triple.  Jones then scored on another single.  Not blaming Pillar or wanting him to become less aggressive, but he makes that catch and Bummy gets out of the first inning unscathed and it's a completely different ballgame the rest of the way.  As you can see from the line, he was dominant.

The Loss dropped the Giants to 3.5 games behind the Cubs for the second Wild Card Playoff spot.  Guess who the next series is against.

The Giants have a travel day tomorrow and then start a 3-gamer against the team currently in control of the second Wild Card spot.  Tyler Beede will take the mound on Tuesday facing Cole Hamels.

Churn Baby, Churn:  Travis Bergen was DFA'd which means after all this he will likely be going back to the Blue Jays.  Abiatal Avelino got the call up.

  1. Anyone have any idea what's wrong with Tony Watson?

    1. I heard he this bad last year in August too, and then fine in Sept. I'm sure he will get run out there again until he is right or the season is over.

  2. Baseball can be so mean: Stat line shows Crawford 2-4 but doesn't show 1 hit was a bunt and 1 out was with the bases loaded, one run in, and 2 outs.
Another stat shows Posey 0-3 and hitting into a DP but the DP was a misread by Gennett of a scorched line drive by Posey and a runner on 2nd was lost in front of Belt who has been hitting well.
Game is changed by one liner falling in, another liner getting caught, and a missed opportunity that the Giants have been capitalizing on lately.
Sad loss but SF still pretty much has control of their destiny in 37 games: they just have to win 24 or 25 of their games and watch the teams ahead of them knock each other out!
And it would be nice if Crawford and Belt would get their acts together and get their offensive (Base-Ref) WAR out of the pitcher level, or we'll be looking back at them for sinking the unlikely boat that Zaidi has crafted.

    2. But if he did that he would have lost the club house. Gotta show the guys you believe in them every time you can. Crawford has earned the right to flail er I mean try to get a hit because he has gotten a hit in key moments in the past (too bad it was 2 years ago). I mean, if Bochy pinch hits for Crawford, Posey will be looking over his shoulder next time he has an opportunity to get RBI's and so will Belt and Panik (oops, never mind, Dr. Z. took that toy away). And if those guys start to get unsettled about their place in BB's book, well their offensive production will surely decline and so will the Giant's record (oh wait...)

  3. He seems to be a prime choice to give a 10 day IL "rest" break....that is if there is indeed nothing wrong with him. I would almost vote for the latter. This guy was the definition of above average set up man for two thirds of the season and now he is hardly even an option for mop up time. The wheels have come completely off of his wagon.
