Game Wrap 8/24/2019: Giants 10 A's 5

Madison Bumgarner was not at his best and the bullpen was less than stellar, but the Giants put up an 8-run rally in the 8'th inning capped by Steven Vogt's 3-run HR to win going away.  Key Lines:

Steven Vogt DH- 1 for 5, HR(8).  BA= .280.  Vogt got a nice reception from the crowd of 53,000 at the Coliseum and the Giants actually had a DH who made the lineup better than if they just let Bummy hit for himself.  What a concept!

Alex Dickerson LF- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .328.  Dickerson is the guy who turned the Giants season around when he arrived on June 21.  He's starting to heat up again with 5 hits in 14 AB over his last 3 games.

Evan Longoria 3B- 2 for 4, HBP.  BA= .257.  Longo showed some resourcefulness at the plate when he hit one off the fists into CF to drive in the Giants 2'nd run of the game.  He later singled during the 8'th inning rally.

Kevin Pillar CF- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(11).  BA= .260.  Pillar's 2-run double in the 8'th is what really broke this game open several batters before Steven Vogt came to the plate.

Brandon Crawford SS- 2 for 5, HR(10).  BA= .230.  Crawford has found a little hot streak here going 5 for 10 over his last 3 games.  He poked an opposite field drive that sliced around the LF foul pole in the 5'th for the Giants first run and of course he singled in the 8'th inning rally.  And he reached double digits in HR's for the 6'th year in a row.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.71.  Not a terrible start but not up to Bummy's standards.  His velocity seemed to be down which is something to watch going forward.

*********************************************************************************

The Win gained the Giants a game in the Wild Card race where they sit 5 games behind the Cubs.

*********************************************************************************

Logan Webb goes for the 2-game sweeeeeep today against Brett Anderson.

*********************************************************************************

Pablo Sandoval needs TJ surgery.  Maybe he was doing too much pitching on the side?

Notes from the Sluice Box:  Shaun Anderson was the callup to replace Andrew Suarez.  Anderson gave up a run in 0.2 IP.

  1. You think there is anyone that would claim Longo on waivers, if the giants were willing to eat a portion of the contract?

    1. He’s providing surplus value on his $12/m salary and you can’t do trades like that anymore. They’d be just cutting him and letting someone sign him for the minimum while paying the balance of his contract.

They may be able to trade him in the off season, but who plays third?

  3. How can we expect Giants to make a WC run when Dickerson was lost to IL for weeks and now Panda, clutch hitter and best pinch hitter in the league is out the last 6 weeks of the season? The genuine affection between Bochey and Sandoval is really touching. Hope Giants re-sign Sandoval in off season to a two year pact.

  4. Stennett sadly is a bust (last 7, 10, 15, and 20), now Crawford is hitting and Solano has been consistantly good.
    Thanks for your effort, Scooter.
Time to take a good look at Dubon and Avelino and maybe Cristhian Adames.
Would someone please look at the stats?
