Game Wrap 8/14/2019: A's 9 Giants 5

Tyler Beede struggled again.  The offense was impotent against Homer Bailey.  The makeshift bullpen was exposed.  A 5-spot in the 8'th inning made the final score look a lot closer than the game really was.  Key Lines:

Mike Yastrzemski LF- 1 for 3, HR(13), BB.  BA= .267.  I have to say, it is looking more and more like the Giants have found themselves, not just a solid player, but a star, hopefully for several years to come.  Of course avoiding the dreaded sophomore jinx is the key to this but there is nothing in his secondary stats that looks unsustainable.  How does 30 HR, 90 Runs and 90 RBI's with good D over the course of a full season sound?

Tyler Beede RHP- 4 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 5 K's, 2 HBP.  ERA= 5.77.  The K/BB looks pretty good, but was he grooving pitches to avoid walks?  Boch seems to think it's a confidence issue and he(Boch) still believes in the stuff.  Then again, stuff has never been Beede's issue.

Bullpen- 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  Coonrod and Gustave pitched scoreless innings but Bergen, Jerez and Gott did not.

The Loss leaves the Giants 4.5 games behind the Cardinals for the second Wild Card spot which may be falling out of reach.

The Giants now head to Arizona for a 4-game series starting tomorrow with Dereck Rodriguez facing young lefty Alex Young.  The Giants SP for game 2 of the series is TBD.

  1. may be falling out of reach...........I don't think it was ever realistic, why I thought Bum and Smith plus Panda, Pillar should have been traded at the Deadline.

  2. Is there a problem with Samardzija?
Tonight is the 5th day since he pitched -- if they hadn't had a day off Monday, he would be pitching the AZ opener.
Beede pitched on the 4th, the 9th, the 14th, but not Samardzija following him Thursday (pitched the 5th, 10th, and not the 15th).
OK, they know more what they're doing but for a team not to use one of their best starters in his turn when they only have 2 reliable starters seems like not trying.
