  1. I really didnt like Farhan when he was hired and it took until a few weeks ago before I realized why I was wrong. I have a theory about the potential for the success of unexpected prospects which I am starting to realize is a huge part of Zaidi’s strategy. My theory is that there are probably around 50-100 minor leaguers any given year who have the potential to be impact MLB players given the opportunity. Opportunities are hard to come by with most clubs because the preference with most GM’s still lies with filling their roster with “proven” commodities.

I guess I always knew that this was part of Farhans master plan but I didnt have enough confidence in his talent evaluation to think he could consistently do it. I thought Muncy and Taylor were blind luck especially after the first 15 players he acquired that sucked and he had to move on from.

One key component to this strategy and the biggest difference between this year and previous years is the roster flexibility. In past years there was maybe 1-2 roster spots to play with where this year there were 5-6. More roster spots means more chances to hit on that out of nowhere player. Farhan also has much less patience then his predecessors who would stick with their lottery tickets like Justin Maxwell or Juan Perez much too long. Farhan has no problem making decisions based on small sample sizes and so far its been proving he is not an idiot!

    1. A lot of teams can not promote minor league talent because a big contract is blocking the younger player.

I think Farhan uses algos and artificial intelligence to find gold (joke).

  2. Simon Whiteman (2019 9th round) has a fair 10-game record after promotion to more age appropriate A ball at Augusta (11 for 37, 10 R, 5 SB, 2 RBI, 3 W 11K, 0 XBH .297/.350/.297/.647).
With no power and too many strikeouts to go along with a probable very bright mind (4 years at Yale), should he progresses it will be as a smart middle infielder if his fielding is good enough to carry him. He has started all 10 games with Augusta at SS, but he made 2 errors fielding last night in the rout of Lakewood.

  3. This is the way one Twin evaluator felt about Jaylin Davis in mid-July:

The Twins Other Right Field Prospect, Jaylin Davis

The Twins farm system is lauded as one of the best in baseball. They have a number of top end prospects that catch headlines, but the real strength of the system is its depth. This is emphasized by the fact that the Red Wings MVP the past 25 games wasn’t on anyone’s radar coming into this season. I’m talking about Jaylin Davis.

He wasn’t ranked on Fangraphs top 41 Twins prospects, which includes 8 other outfielders. It’s hard to blame them either as coming into this year, he never put up spectacular numbers. His career minor league OPS is .796, which is solid. But he’s on the older side for a prospect as he just turned 25 a couple weeks ago. He also doesn’t play a premier defensive position as a right fielder.

Davis played 58 games at AA Pensacola putting up a very good .OPS of .840 which prompted his promotion to the Red Wings. After his first 25 games with the Twins top minor league affiliate, he’s sporting an MVP caliber .OPS of 1.066. The MLB ball is treating his slugging percentage well, sitting at a ridiculous .696, a huge improvement from his .458 clip in AA.

Jaylin Davis isn’t currently on the Twins 40 man roster, but if he continues putting up these numbers, they almost necessitate a September callup. He could also be an important trade piece as a major league ready piece for a rebuilding club, although the more likely candidates for that spot are Brent Rooker and Nick Gordon.

Whether it’s with the Twins or another club, I’m excited to see what the future holds for Jaylin Davis.
