Spring Training Game Wrap 3/25/2015: Rockies 5 Giants 2

Tim Hudson pitched a Quality Start, but it wasn't enough as the Giants offense continued to sputter.  Key Lines:

Nori Aoki(LF)- 1 for 4, 3B.  BA= .204.  Aoki has what?  6 hits in his last 4 games?

Buster Posey(Catcher)- 1 for 2, BB.  BA= .231.  Posey left the game after 5 innings due to pain in the right scapular area.  It is not believed to be a serious injury. Posey will play 1B tomorrow.

Brandon Belt(1B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .341.  Belt continues to Belt.

Justin Maxwell(PH-RF)- 1 for 2, 2B.  BA= .277.  I would say Mazwell is winning the race for the final(temporary) OF job.  After that it will depend on who hits better, Maxwell or Travis.

Tim Hudson(RHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  Very Huddy-like performance.  It's the offense's job to score more than 3 runs in a game.

Around the League:

Carlos Rodon struck out 9 batters in 4 IP, for the ChiSox.  I have him targeted for a bench stash for my fantasy draft.

Remember Keon Barnum, draft prospect I really liked from a couple of years ago?  Well, I watched him put a charge into a ball pitched by veteran lefty Franklin Morales.  The ball went out on a line drive and landed beyond the RF bullpen.

Another rookie pitcher to watch out for his Anthony DeSclafini who was traded to the Reds over the offseaon.  He is having a sensational spring and pitched a gem tonight with 9 K's.

Forbes magazine says the Giants are worth $2 B, just $400 M less than the Dodgers.  The Giants were also the 4'th most profitable team last year clearing a cool $70 M +/-.

  1. Some signs of life in the offense at least from players who are going to be starters.
Also, looks like Panda continues to talk about the Giants and admits it was the fact that the Giants put him on a regime for his weight that pissed him off. He said he changed his phone number too. Like Crawford basically said, Pablo being Pablo. Good luck with that Red Sox.

    1. The article I read about Pablo's comments basically said he's always been this big and has proven it doesn't matter. Wow! I guess that author has not followed Pablo's career with the Giants very closely. In fact there is a close inverse correlation between his weight and on-field performance. Yeah, this is not going to go well in Beantown.

    2. I saw that, too, and emailed the author asking him if he could substantiate his conclusion, or did he even look at Sandoval's year by year performance?

    3. Isn't the blogger on Giants sites, the one who wrote that the Giants farm system is a nuclear wasteland, named CHRIS QUICK? Or uses that screen name? When the name Cwik is so unusual, and the last name Quick isn't common either, and they're both sounding off on baseball, I've got to suspect they might be the same. If they are, the guy does know something about the Giants. Which doesn't, of course, keep him from the danger of being dead wrong about them.

    4. Yeah, I read that article. Sandoval is seriously kidding himself. The one year he was in great shape, he showed everyone that he could be a truly great 3B -- offense and defense -- and would have been one best in a very, very, very long time.

Instead learning that lesson and building on it he went back to being fat and spoiled. And resentful for the organization trying to get him to play up to his talent level by dropping all the fat. So I just don't see Mr. Bad Body ever living up to his potential.

Which is a shame. And not the Giant's problem any longer.

  2. Looks like Maxwell's starting to settle in.

  3. I think I read a similar article. The author only referenced Pablo's combined career numbers, not the fact that those number have been declining since 2011. What I find funny is that the article was dismissive of the Giants' concerns but toward the end mentioned that David Ortiz has already talked to Pablo about the importance of watching his weight. So, Ortiz being concerned about his weight is okay, but the Giants' front office's concerns are not?

I don't think it takes a genius to realize who is the bad guy in this whole situation.

  4. For what it is worth, Pablo is hitting .233 with 1 HR and no walks in 30 AB's during spring training. On the flip side, the local Golden Corral there has never had higher buffet sales!

  5. I think Panda isn't bad. I think he was hurt and he's not mature enough to address it the right way. Not saying I agree with the statements, but I just don't want to vilify the guy. I think notably he walked back the comments about the other players, and seemed to suggest his favorites were Pence and Bochy not he didn't like all of them. I'm sure that didn't play well with some (like Crawford, who said "that's Panda being Panda"), but it seemed to suggest that Panda realized he may have taken it a bit too far. If he wants to direct his anger at the Giants FO that is certainly his right (and certainly, I can't say I blame them given the lack of maturity he showed generally about his weight and then specifically after the fact). At some level, I just wish him the best, he's on a great team that might in fact win it all and we just need to focus on finding the next guy. Too much has spent on this one (IMO)
