Spring Training Game Wrap 3/19/2015: Giants 3 Brewers 2

Maybe the Giants just needed a day off to clear out the cobwebs.  They came back today to play a crisp game with Ryan Vogelsong leading the way on the mound.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik(2B)- 1 for 3, HR(2).  BA= .125.  Not sure a HR is the best way for Panik to break out of a spring slump, but it sure helped win this game and get the Giants an early lead.

Brandon Belt(1B)- 1 for 3, HR(3).  BA= .355.  Belt belts another one and seems primed for a big season.  Please stay healthy!

Ryan Vogelsong(RHP)- 4.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.84.  I'm pretty sure this is the best start of the spring for the Giants.  Vogelstrong!

Sergio Romo(RHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(1).  ERA= 4.50.  It wasn't a clean inning, but Romo got the Save.  The way Casilla is going, Romo could have the closer job back by Opening Day.

Angel Pagan got an injection in his ailing back, not exactly the news we wanted to hear about him.

Matt Cain pitched 4.1 innings in a minor league game and reportedly looked short with a FB that sat 90-92 MPH.

Tim Hudson gets the start today facing the Cincinnati Red in Scottsdale.

  1. Maybe Panik is trying to shift the scouting reports by blasting some dingers and mixing in some big swings while the air is light in Arizona?

I bet there is a big difference between 0-1 HR and 3-5 per season in terms of keeping pitchers honest.

  2. Seems conceivable that the team may open the season without its starting CF or RF and the reserves are uninspiring. Maybe platoons of Blanco/Perez in CF and Maxwell/Parker in RF? Leaving leadoff hitter Aoki as the only "stalwart" in LF? Good gracious; this won't exactly strike terror in the hearts of the Dodgers, Padres, et al.

And then there's that venerable but rickety starting rotation .... Good thing Bochy's a hell of a manager.

    1. Sabean and Bochy discussing Belt, and Duffy in the OF.I'm interested to see how Duffy does in the OF.Would be nice to have his bat in the line up.If you have Belt in the OF.Susac or Posey can play 1B.They said Brown is still being looked at too.

    2. Oh boy! So Bochy makes an almost offhand "never say never" comment and the whole Belt to LF thing reignites and takes off like a wildfire. First of all, Pence will be back in about a month. Are they really going to mess around with Belt in the OF so he can return to 1B in a month? Probably not. As for Pagan, Blanco and Juan P can platoon that position quite nicely. There is Aoki for LF. The Giants brought in Maxwell for some reason and they have to fish or cut bait with Gary Brown sometime. They are also not going to put Belt in the OF just so they can play Travis Ishikawa at 1B. Ishikawa played OF last year. He would play OF ahead of Belt. So, I do not expect to see Brandon Belt manning the OF much, if at all, this season.

    3. I'd rather have Belt at 1B.It's nice to have the versatility though in case of injury. The news on Pagan is not good.If another OF goes down due to injury. And,Maxwell,Perez, and Ishikawa don't hit.You have to be prepared.I'd rather see if Duffy can play LF before Belt.

  3. I've enjoyed Belt's Spring Training. He seems to be hitting on all cylinders right now.

And it was a positive game in respects to pitching. And even while Romo didn't have a clean inning, if memory serves me right, he worked out of a 2-on, no-outs jam which is an important step forward in getting back to 'doing things well.'

  4. Panik and Posey are having a rough spring but I think they will be okay when the games matter. Would be nice to see a little extra power out of both of them. I would be totally fine with 5-7 dingers for Panik and about 24-26 out of Posey. I think they are both capable of that.

Romo never has had very clean innings in my opinion. I just would like to see the dingers go down this year.

Pagan is starting to give me heart palpitations. I am scared that he is going to go all Scutaro on us. I truly believe if we cannot count on him much this year then we may need to make a move. If you see a trade for Allen Craig in the next few weeks then that is a red flag that Pagan is done. I hope that is not the case because I really like Pagan. Maxwell is nice but I don't see him as an everyday starter. I liked what I saw from Jarrett Parker and Gary Brown but I don't know how much faith the FO has in them. If Williamson did not get hurt last year I wonder if he would be on the top of the list.

  5. Another good start, this by Hudson. Cain did well in his minor league camp outing. Bum is Bum. Peavy will be ready.
The reports of the demise of the Giants pitching is premature.

  6. Belt won't be moved to LF.
    Craig won't be gotten.
    Pagan won't play 100 games.
    Susac will start in Sacramento.
No one will panic even if the Giants play .300 in April.
Last year the Giants went 42-21 to start the season (43-21 if you count the game won later), but then went 20-36.
The MLB season is too long to start worrying in mid March.

  7. Romo had a pretty fair World Series in 2012: 3 appearances, 3 finishes, 3 saves, 0.00 WHIP, 9 batters, 5 K's and a called 3rd strike against MVP Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera to end the game on a FB when everyone except Posey and him expected a slider.
