Spring Training Game Wrap 3/4/2015: A's 9 Giants 2

Things did not go any better for the Giants in their Spring Training home opener in Scottsdale.   The A's teed off on several Giants pitcher and the hitters were listless for the second game in a row.  Key Lines:

Buster Posey- 1 for 1, 2B, BB.  BA= 1.000.  Buster seemed to be in midseason form.  The double drove in Pagan and Adrianza for the Giants only 2 runs of the game.

Casey McGehee- 2 for 2.  BA= .667.  So far McGehee is living up to his nickname from Miami, Hits, with 3 in the first 2 games.

Ehire Adrianza- 1 for 2.  BA= .250.  Adrianza got another start at SS with Brandon Crawford DH'ing due to a sore shoulder.  This is why Adrianza needs to be on the Opening Day roster.  Crawford has been very durable, but if he were to miss an extended number of games, Adrianza is the one guy in the organization who could take over the position defensively.

Jake Peavy- 1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  A veteran getting his work in.

Ty Blach- 1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  A non-veteran trying to make an impression.  Rough outing!

Joan Gregorio- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  Breakout candidate.

Adalberto Mejia- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.  Very nice outing for a kid who will serve a 50 game suspension to start the season.  Nice to see the Giants give him a vote of confidence on the suspension front.

The Giants get away from the A's for awhile and send Ryan Vogelsong to the mound to face the Cubs.

  1. With what they did to us regular season last year, I'm glad:
    1. Oakland is in the American League
    2. KC knocked them off in 2014 post season before they got on a roll
    3. Since they can't go to San Jose, maybe they'll move far away and not be our "rivals" any more!

    1. I just hope Oakland didn't try too hard and either hurt themselves or forgot to work on stuff they needed to work on.

  2. About Blach: His primary asset is control, pounding the zone, etc.; his stuff is not overwhelming. Kind of reminds me of Petit, who typically gets rocked in the spring, essentially throwing batting practice until he develops his feel for the corners. Recall too that notorious zone-pounder M. Bumgarner occasionally would get hit hard in his early years, though he had the benefit of a big arm and bigger heart. I wouldn't be surprised if Blach gets beat up this spring a bit. The test will be whether he settles down in Sacramento.

    1. Gregorio's numbers that game weren't all that it seemed. I was listening on the radio and he was brought in mid inning to relieve Blach and if I recall correctly he let 2 more of Blach's runs come in.

  3. lessons learned here is how Giants should play small-ball and run away with the game, A's game so far (other than the HR's yesterday) have been get on base and keep moving the runner forward, Moneyball !!!!

  4. I wouldn't worry about the first few weeks of Spring Training. Pitchers are concentrating on location and control versus trying to get batters out. Pitchers are not always using their entire arsenal at this point.

I could care less if McHits ever hits with power again. He can get his 2 hits a night and we will happy with that. Very promising.

Very impressed by Gregorio and Mejia. Some evaluators believe these 2 guys should be at the top of our prospect list. I can see why.

    1. Nate the Great is #8 OFer on Texas depth chart. He plays right field better than Hunter.
Can barely hit a lick, though.
