Down on the Farm: 8/26/2013

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies shut out the Sacramento River Cats 7-0:

Angel Pagan(CF)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .364.
Johnny Monell(DH)- 1 for 2, 3 BB.  BA= .283.
Chris Dominguez(3B)- 3 for 5, HR(14).  BA= .298.
Juan Perez(RF)- 3 for 4, HBP, SB(18).  BA= .301.
Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 2 for 3, HBP.  BA= .311.
Fabio Castillo(RHP)- 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's  ERA= 6.71.

Pagan seems ready.  He's apparently not coming back until rosters expand this weekend.  I am impressed with Chris Dominguez consistency this season and he's ending it with a flourish.  Has he finally figured it out at the plate?  This was a bullpen game with no pitcher throwing more than 3 innings.  Castillo's stint was the most impressive.

AA  Reading Phightin' Phils came from behind to edge out the Richmond Flying Squirrels in 10 innings:

Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .169.
Javier Herrera(RF-LF)- 2 for 5.  BA= .293.
Craig Westcott(RHP)- 1 for 1, 2 BB.  BA= .353.
Craig Westcott(RHP)- 6.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.87.

Westcott has been steady Eddy on the mound but does not appear to have the stuff to make it at higher levels.  He has had several good games at the plate.  I wonder if he has thought about trying to play a position?

High A  San Jose Giants beat the Bakersfield Blaze 5-2:

Myles Schroder(1B)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .276.
Mac Williamson(RF)- 3 for 4, 2B, SB(10). BA= .293.
Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 6.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.38.
Jose Casilla(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.19.

Mac stays hot!  Can he get to a .300 BA?

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets were idle.

Short Season Game 1  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes defeated the Eugene Emeralds 5-1:

Ryan Jones(2B)- 1 for 2, 2 BB, 2 HBP. 2 SB(8).  BA= .355.
Blake Miller(1B)- 1 for 4, BB, SF.  BA= .351.
Eugene Escalante(C)- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .300.
Ryan Tuntland(3B)- 2 for 4, Sac.  BA= .239.
John Polonius(SS)- 3 for 5.  BA= .285.
Cameron McVey(RHP)- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.35.

The Giants seem to have some weeding out to do at 2B and C in the lower minors.

Short Season Game 2  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Eugene Emeralds 5-3:

Tyler Hollick(PR-CF)- 1 for 1, HR(2).  BA= .259.
Shilo McCall(LF)- 2 for 4, HR(4), Assist.  BA= .234.
Andrew Leenhouts(LHP)- 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.43.
Steven Neff(LHP)- 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.93.
Dan Slania(RHP)- 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.63.

This seems to be the game that was suspended on 8/25.  Good to see McCall still out there taking his hacks.

Rookie AZL  Giants vs Cubs postponed due to rain.  It's monsoon time in the desert!

DSL  Red Sox defeated the Giants 6-2 in Game 1 of the DSL Playoffs:

Really, nothing to see here.  Giants managed just 3 hits.  Not sure why Gustavo did not play.  I can't imagine you would sit your hottest player in a playoff game if he was not injured.

  1. Really hoping to see DOMINGUEZ and ADRIANZA join the call ups in September....Maybe the two, IF DOMINGUEZ has figured it out, along with Arias can be part of the backup IF next year in SF...

Cody HALL has been lights out this year but blew it big time last night...Gave up a 2 run HR in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score and then a walk off HR in the 10th..Obviously, he also has some work to do..No rush..

    1. Arias looks like he can play outfield as well.

Maybe more at-bats for him if that works out.

  2. Any of you guys know of a resource that lists minor league Spring Training stats for any given year?

    Thanks,

    1. If such a resource exists, I have no idea where it is. I'm not even sure there is official scoring in those games. I've read accounts of batters getting extra pitches and extra AB's in those games if there is someone or something that is being worked on.

    2. Thanks for your input, DocB- I've heard numbers mentioned in the past, but only on occasion. Like, "So-and-so hit .420 in Spring, with 6 doubles and 4 HRs. But that won't necessarily carry into the season." ...kind of thing.

  3. Kieschnick and Williamson patrolling the outfield for SF in 2015?

    1. I hate to say it but, I for one, am not impressed with Kieschnick...he hasn't totally go the job done in the minors and my reaction from seeing him in the ML is that he will not be able to hit for power AND average, maybe even neither..I truly hope I am wrong......I love what MAC is doing, next year in RICHMOND will be a better indicator...

    2. It could be that MAC has a higher ceiling - and I don't claim to know enough to say more - but if you love what MAC is doing, that is to say, based on what he has done, he and Kieschnick are comparable, at least within the tolerance I find acceptable (due to not having faced the 'exact' opposing pitchers, even if the sample sizes are sufficiently large enough).

    3. True, and I also liked Kieschnick a lot in the lower minors and had high hopes for him...But, his performance in The PCL and what I have seen in the Majors leave me unimpressed...I hope I don't see the same with MAC in a few years

    4. Roger K lost a lot of time and momentum to injuries. I like what I've seen so far in MLB games. Like most prospects, he needs some reps at the MLB level to really see what he's got. Like all tall guys, he's going to struggle to control his strike zone.

Speaking of which. The other day, it looked to me like Brandon Belt has moved 2 inches closer to home plate instead of 2 inches farther back. I see his plate crowding as a bigger problem than his wrapping. He could be 4 inches farther off the plate and still get excellent coverage of the outer half while giving him some room on the inner half. He's having to pull his arms in the get the head of the bat on pitches down the middle!!

    5. I hope you are right....I haven't liked his swing in the ML and I don't think he has what it takes to be a starter in MLB...But it's a SSS and I will be rooting for him...I'd also like to Frankie Pegs to be given just as many at bats

    1. Gustavo's name is in a boxscore from 8/24, but looks like he came out of the game. I am not sure if that was the completion of a previously suspended game or not.

  5. Gustavo had a hbp again. I hope they are just being cautious.

Check out joe gatto from Nj prep ranks. Added 10 mph to his fastball and sits mid 90s. This draft order stuff will be interesting. Hard to get by the Chicago teams, Miami and Houston are impossible. But big group of teams with similar losses.

If Mac didn't hurt himself diving for that ball we might already have a look at Richmond. Due to the easy plus power he is at least as exciting as Nate.

Where the heck did bacci go btw?

    1. There's also Luis Cruz and Dylan Cease. This draft class has a whole lot of very good looking pitchers in it.

  6. BTW, GIANTS have announced their contingent for the AFL:

    Pitchers: Crick, Hall, Meijia

    Position: Villalona, Parker and Susac..

good choice, I think. All of Crick, Meijia, Villalona and Susac missed a lot of time this season, so thety shouldn't be worn down.

Also, maybe a good place for Parker to figure something and Hall to tweek his stuff.

    1. Maybe Blackburn also.

    2. Was just going by the names that Pavlovic of the Mercury News tweeted..I hope not on Blackburn, he's pitched enough the past few years at his age..

    3. That's a valid point, though he doesn't seem like a high-pitch-count type of guy...so, perhaps less taxing physically on him.

    4. Not only that, Blackburn has a low-effort type of delivery from the 3-4 starts I've seen from him this year in SJ. If I didn't know any better I would think he's easing off and throwing at about 75% effort, his delivery is that smooth. In fact, I bet he'd easily gain a few points on his fastball to around 92-94 (from his typical 89-91) if he maxed out a little more often.

    5. Those are all players I will look forward to following in the AFL. I'm tellin' ya. Angel V's bat has a chance to be special!
