Game Wrap 8/31/2013: D'Backs 4 Giants 3

The Giants and D'Backs traded 3-spots with the D'Backs finally breaking the tie in the bottom of the 9'th inning.  Key Lines:

Angel Pagan- 1 fo 4, BB, SB(7).  BA= .263.  Two solid games for Pagan since coming off the DL.

Marco Scutaro- 1 for 4, 3B, BB.  BA= .297.  1 of 2 XBH's out of 11 hits for the Giants.

Buster Posey- 2 for 5.  BA= .304.  A day at the office.

Hunter Pence- 3 for 4, SB(20).  BA= .281. Giants left a lot of runners on base, a major issue for the entire season, including Pence all 3 times he got on base and in spite of the SB.

Gregor Blanco- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .249.  Uh-oh!  Gotta watch Blanco after a dinger.  He starts thinking he can hit one every AB.

Ryan Vogelsong- 6 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.49.  A QS for Vogey despite allowing 11 baserunners in 6 IP.

The Loss left the Giants in 8'th place in the drive for the #1 overall draft pick.

Yusmeiro Petit takes on his old team, the D'Backs, tomorrow facing Patrick Corbin trying to win the series.

  1. Here's a question for you my erstwhile friend. As you probebly know, one Myles Schroder has been hot as hades over his last 11 games or so with San Jose. He was drafted in 2007 but never showed up until late in 2012.

Where in hades has this guy been?

    1. The answer is, I don't know! There was certainly nothing in his stat lines to make any impression at all. The Giants obviously saw something that made them keep putting him out there. Then, I saw him play in a couple of Cal League games early this season and came away impressed by how he looked. He's listed at 5'11" but looks taller. He has very athletic movements on the field, good ballance, nice approach at the plate. He can play several positions.

Let's see if he can keep it going next year, but I think he may be a sleeper. His ceiling is probably more utility man than starting position player, though.

  2. I was thinking the exact thing after Blanco hit the dinger.

Boch needs to go Willie Mayes Hayes on him for the next week or so to make sure he doesn't get those delusions of grandeur.

  3. Realistically we have no shot at the #1 draft pick as Houston and Miami have the top 2 slots secured. However, there is an outside shot at #3 and probably, realistically, a #5 or #6 slot is within reach. Unfortunately, last night I found myself rooting for the Giants to tie the game so that Vogey did not get the loss, but I did not want them to win and raised my hand when the Snakes won the game in the 9th. What a sad state of affairs. I am also rooting for the White Sox, Cubs, Twins, Brewers, Padres, Phils, Mets, Mariners, Angels and Blue Jays to win. APGiantsfan

    1. I certainly want to see individual Giants players play well and I want to see them play good fundamental baseball, but I also think landing a top 5 draft pick in this draft is a tremendous opportunity to improve the future of the team in a very significant way. So yeah, I am definitely rooting for the highest draft pick they can get.

I don't really look at it as a sad state of affairs. As I have said before, I see this season more as a perfect storm of unfortunate occurrences than the organization falling into disrepair. It's a bump in the road that could come with a great opportunity to improve the future.

Having said that, I think we all have to recognize that the Dodgers have changed the landscape this year and they are going to be the team to beat going forward for the forseeable future.
