Game Wrap 8/8/2024: Giants 9 Nationals 5(10 innings)

The Giants overcame a 2-hour rain delay in the 8'th inning and a Blown Save by Camilo Doval to win in a daytime final game of a road trip in extra innings.  Key Lines:

Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 2 for 5, 2B, BB, 3 SB(9).  Fitz is looking like a 20-20 threat.... in half a season!

Michael Conforto LF- 2 for 4, 2 BB.  BA= .239.  Conforto has a 6-game hit streak in which he is 11 for 22.

Mark Canha 1B- 4 for 6, 2B.  BA= .242.  Bringing in Canha did not require FZ to trade away Jorge Soler.

Kyle Harrison LHP- 4.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.08.  I was working during the game but I've seen comments saying Harrison's velocity was still down.

Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 4.70.  The Giants staked Doval to a 3-run lead.   He walked two batters and almost pitched his way out of this but gave up a 3-run HR to blow the Save and sent it to extra innings.  His teammates picked him up.

The Giants close to 3 games behind in the Wild Card race.

The Giants have a late but happy flight home then open a weekend series agains the Tigers Friday with Robbie Ray LHP facing TBD.

  1. it's time to send doval to the IL and go closer by committee. the velocity may not be down but, the mechanics are off enough that there may be an underlying injury. i think some R&R is what may fix doval.

  2. Jeez, what do you do with Doval? Do you keep him as closer?

  3. Yeah, the DOVAl situation is tricky..Seems all in his head...does his worst when it's not nail biting so likely would do worse anywhere other then closer...and moving Walker and/or Rogers (lefty) from their roles now where they have been so good is also tricky...Why Melvin gets paid the big bucks!

Sloppy yesterday, but they did what they had to do and won 3 of 4..They have to be pumped..and with an easy schedule the next 12 games...and maybe all the bats coming togehter......The scenario where the Giants usually face plant!!!!...Hope Ray can deal tonight..

Maybe Canha can be this years Cody Ross!

  4. With SF going over .500 yesterday, that makes 4 teams in the NL West with winning records.
    What is left?
Assuming the Hated Ones stave off hard charging AZ and SD (might be some doubt there), the Giants fare well against all the potential wild card teams (except StL), with these head to head records:
AZ 3-4, 6 games to play, 3 each, home & home
SD 4-3, 6 games to play, SF has 6 in a row with AZ & SD in September
ATL 2-1, 4 games to play at home next week
StL 0-3, 3 games to close season at home, just after 3 in AZ
    Cubs 4-3, finished season series
    Reds 4-2, finished season series
    NYM 4-2, finished season series
    Pitt 4-2, finished season series

The Giants have 12 other quite difficult road games to play:
Mariners & Brewers end of August, then Orioles & Royals in late September. Those teams are 10-20+ games over .500, except Seattle.

34 of the 45 games the Giants have left are with locked in teams or contenders.
If they cannot fare very well in their next 12 games (at home with 2 in Oakland) against losing teams (Atlanta is 6-12 in their last 18), the mountain they will have to climb, with every team a contender (except 3 at home with Miami), is daunting, if not impossible. Their fate in in their hands and the arms of their pitching.
Please, Lord, keep Conforto and Canha and Fitz and Ramos and Chapman and Wade and YtY healthy and breath some life into Bailey and Wisely and EncarnaciĆ³n and resurrect Schmitt and Murphy. Amen.
