Game Wrap 8/5/2024: Giants 4 Nationals 1

Logan Webb came one out short of a quality start but 5.2 innings of 1-run ball was good enough for a W.  Key Lines:

Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 2 for 4, HR(12).  BA= .314.  I don't want to get irrationally exuberant here but Fitz sure looks like the Giants SS of the present and future.   Counting his minor league experience, this is now his third season in a row with at least 20 HR's.  He had 19 in 2021.  The only season he didn't also hit for a solid BA is 2022, his first season at AA Richmond, a notoriously tough transition, but he still hit 21 HR's that season.  What I am saying is while the current HR pace is not sustainable, being a starting caliber MLB SS is.

Matt Chapman 3B- 1 for 4, HR(18).  BA= .246.  3-run homers and great pitching win games.  Chapman's blast in the 3'rd inning capped the Giants scoring but that's all they needed.

Jerar Encarnacion RF- 2 for 4.  BA= .308.  Jerar has not done anything to quell the irrational exuberance so far.(OK, I think I'm running that one into the ground. Couldn't resist).

Logan Webb RHP- 5.2 IP, 4 H 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 7/3.  ERA= 3.42.  Not a classic Webb start but a solid follow up to his complete game shutout last start.

Ryan Walker RHP, Taylor Rogers LHP, Tyler Rogers RHP and Camilo Doval RHP mixed and matched the final 3.1 innings with Doval striking out the side to record his 21'st Save.

The Win was the Giants 8'th in 10 games, yet they remain 4.5 games behind in the Wild Card playoff race.

Hayden Birdsong RHP faces Mackenzie Gore LHP tomorrow evening.

  1. This won also got them back to .500 for the first tone since opening day, from what I can gather. Keep up the momentum, Orange and Black!!

    1. ... since May 31st, 29-29, in the midst of a 6-game losing streak to Philly, NYY, and AZ – 3 good teams.
The Giants have had 4 losing streaks of 4 or more games – something the now pitching staff should be able to avoid.
So far, Encarnación is an upgrade, and, apparently, CAN play RF...

  2. great win against a team who the giants have recently struggled against. another positive trend is that they are finally rattling off some road wins. can they make a playoff push going into september? i hope this quells the fire farhan group for awhile.

    2. No such luck. There was a "fire Farhan" comment right after yours(see below).

  3. good team win, SP, RP, vet bats..kids..what is needed the rest of the way..And winning tow of the next three is mandatory if you care about the POs..Moreso over the next 15 games against a favorable schedule of WSH (3), DET (3), ATL(4 at home), OAK (2) and White Sox (3), Giants kinda have to win 9/10....But, one game at a time...Hope Birdsong continues his strong run...

    1. Fortunately the Giants don't have to win 9 of 10 (which would be nice considering what lies ahead after that) – don't HAVE to because they have the benefit of playing today's wild card teams 18 times: 4 with Atlanta @ home (as you mentioned) and 6 each with San Diego and Arizona, split home & home.

That gives them an opportunity to make the playoffs on their own without relying on other teams to beat their competition. Fair play.

They also need to prove their mettle in:
6 games home & home with Milwaukee (the 3 road games combine with 3 in Seattle, a tough road trip),
9-game Road Trip to Baltimore (tied for 2nd best record in MLB), Kansas City (currently an AL wild card), and finish in Arizona (which could decide a lot of things!)

Season ends at home with St Louis who might still be in the hunt with lots of question marks of their own.

The Giants hold their own destiny. Do they have "the Best Rotation in Baseball"? They will answer that for us.

  4. Hard to make up ground when the teams you're chasing also go 8-2!
The top 4 Western Division teams are all winning, the 3 "challengers" are 8-2 in their last 10.
The Giants have made up 4 games on StL and 3 each against NYM and Pitt.
From a Melvin critic: masterful managing from the 3rd out of the 6th through the final 3 Ks.

  5. Fitz comes through again. I previously said that he should be considered for RoY and I just saw a ranking of all Rookies on the MLB site- he was ninth. There are a lot of good rookies this year that I was not aware of. More importantly, the Giants may have solved their ss position with an impact bat. Never expected this type of performance - kind of reminds me of Matt Duffy but I believe Fitz is far more imapactful long term.

    1. Fitz has a far higher ceiling than Matt Duffy's biggest fans ever imagined for him.

  6. I would not give Farhan a hall pass just because the Giants split a two game series with the A's, won 2 of 3 from the Reds and won the first game of the Nats series. I am tired of the churn (Mark Canha?). Unless they go 32W-16L for the rest of the season, which will give them 89 wins, I would say bye-bye to Farhan. Then with the money the Giants owe him for the next two years, Farhan can devote his time to playing fantasy baseball. He kind of has been playing fantasy baseball with the Giants anyway.

    1. I see the "Fire Farhan" movement is still alive and well.

    2. Giants have won 8 out of 10 since splitting their last 2 games with the Dodgers.

  7. 4 hits from the top of the lineup and
Middle of the lineup: 0-12, 0 RBIs, strand 7
Maybe starting Wade against LHP isn't a good idea
    Schmitt was/is woefully overmatched, 0-12 (last 4), 1-19 (last 6), 0 walks
Chapman: some days you got it, some days you don't
    Melvin: nothing worked, ditto Chapman
    Scarlet: "Tomorrow is another day"
