Game Wrap 8/28/2024: Brewers 5 Giants 3

Bob Melvin fell asleep at the wheel and left an obviously tiring Kyle Harrison in at least one batter too long in the 5'th inning.  By the time Sean Hjelle RHP came in to get the final out of the inning the game was essentially over.  Key Lines:

Kyle Harrison LHP- 4.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.22.  You have a rookie pitcher who is past his previous season IP whose pitch count is climbing into the 80's and appears to be hitting a wall.  What more information do you need to take him the heck out of there?  There are times when it is appropriate to try to get your starting pitcher through an inning but this was not that time for this pitcher.  Honestly if I am in FZ's seat Melvin would not manage another game for the Giants.  The problem for FZ is I am pretty sure ownership views him and Melvin as a package deal.

Austin Warren RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 0.00.  The NBC Sports Bay Area game wrap said Warren hit 95 with the FB.  It also said he struck out 1 batter but the boxscore does not reflect that.

The Giants rallied for 3 runs in the 7'th and 8'th innings but it was too little, too late.  Fitz and Thairo had 2 hits each.  Conforto and Chapman had a double each.

The Loss drops the Giants 6.5 games out of the final Wild Card playoff spot.  We will no longer track the Giants wild card standing in the game wraps unless they are able to significantly cut into the deficit and quickly.

Hayden Birdsong RHP tries for the series win tomorrow at 11:10 AM PDT facing Aaron Civale RHP.

Churn Watch:

Patrick Bailey C is scheduled to come off the IL tomorrow.  That is probably a DFA for Andrew Knapp C.

  1. if the bullpen wasn't gassed, it would be a no-brainer. harrison deserved a better fate tonight and i think he only has a couple of starts left this season. mason black is likely coming up this weekend to take ray's spot, if tristan beck is solid in his next rehab outing, i do think birdsong will be starting his last game this season. i do think spencer howard or stretching out landon roupp to start is what will replace harrison in a couple of weeks.

    1. I get the part about the bullpen being gassed but so was/is Harrison. Hate to put it bluntly but most of the bullpen arms are fungible assets. Harrison is a cornerstone for the future.

    2. If they bring in Kim Ng, I'd like to see her bring Skip Schumaker with her. I really hate the idea of a one and done manager but, farhan's successor should decide his fate.

    3. Not to reflect support for Melvin (thumbs down), but given that the Giants are waving the white flag, perhaps he wanted to see if Harrison could gut it out? And get the last out?
It never should have gotten that far anyway: plate umpire called a solid 2-out strike-three a ball-four just before Harrison succumbed.
It should have been 0-0 through 5 innings.
He definitely should have been pulled after walk, single, double, before the HR!

  2. Fully agree about Melvin.
    He's been terrible.

  3. After a slow start in April, Chapman is .267/.330/.533/.863 in August: talk about turning it on for a new contract!
How high, how long should the Giants go?
He's Top 3 Giant in every O and D category and is #1 in most including WAR, oWAR, and dWAR.
Resigning him may be one good thing that Melvin can bring to the table, or at least help...

  4. Brisbee on The Athletic:
The San Francisco Giants on Wednesday placed left-handed relievers Tyler Matzek and Taylor Rogers and infielder Thairo Estrada on waivers, a league source told The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. The move makes them available to any team willing to claim them and pay the prorated remainder of their respective salaries for 2024. Rogers also has a guaranteed salary for 2025 that would become the responsibility of any team that claimed him.

  5. Of course, waivers doesn't mean anyone is gone: don't they have to be claimed in the next couple of days?

  6. Soler hit a bases empty HR for Atlanta (in Minnesota) yesterday to go with the 4 he hit in Colorado.
With LHP Tyler Matzek going on waivers yesterday, 3B Sabin Ceballos is what the Giants got for Soler other than a salary dump for 2025 & 2026.
If Taylor Rogers gets picked up, that's another $11MM off the books next year. Some contender should need him.
The Giants are going to have beaucoup $$ to spend next year, without Snell, Ray, Chapman, Rogers, Flores, Matzek, Estrada (Arb), and whatever (maybe Wade, $3.5MM+, but doubt that). Maybe they will be down to well under $50MM committed.

  7. Over the past month, Melvin has seemed to make quite a number of bonehead decision with the pitching staff during games...I agree with Docs decision..OTOH, FZ is the architect of this middle of the road morass/mediocrity of a Major league team for another year despite spending a gazillion bucks and gets no pass

All the things happening with the ptiching staff were clear to many in the preseason, except FZ. We knew Hicks would hit pitch/inning counts and injuries, we knew all the young kids, including Harrison would stuggle with innings counts and inconsistency and injuries, we knew Ray (25 M for the next three years??) would come back to injuries/inconsistencies, yet FZ counted on most of them.. Many of us screamed for Snell and possibly another starter, yet FZs only move was to sign SNELL too late in the off-season.....And then there's the pop gun offense created by FZ, but that's a story for another day..

Up to me, I would jettison both FZ and Mevin, if they are indeed a package deal!

On the bright side, just hope to keep seeing RAMOS and FITZ and hoepfully McCray finishing strong...Let's get Luciano up at 2B and see if he can do the same...

  9. As Zaidi always gets beat up on The Athletic, have to wonder why Giant fans PAY to complain about him (and Ownership).

In this day of the Internet, you don't have to live near a team to be a devoted fan. The Giants have knowledgeable fans on this blog who are from Canada, the mid-west (St Louis?), the east coast (Richmond), even the blog owner is SoCal (at least living there for many years): they could have local teams although it's difficult to imagine Doc blogging FOR the Hated Ones.

A personal note: I was born in St Louis in 1940, I lived there and in Florida for many years until my late 20's: the Cardinals were THE team, the only team (before the Braves moved to Atlanta and then the MLB expansion into Florida) in the South. I even tried to imitate Stan the Man's corkscrew stance from the right side, of course it was a failure. I actually met him at 12 yo and got his autograph at Tinker field in Orlando in a Spring Training game with the (then) Washington Senators who trained there.
I wish I still had it.

When a Silicon Valley job in 1967 brought me West, I tried to hang with the Birds on a Bat but there wasn't the internet, and KMOX 1120 didn't reach Palo Alto.
After the 1968 loss to Detroit in the WS, I made the effort to switch to a local team. Of course, the rewards were Mays, McCovey, Marichal, Perry, Hart, Henderson, Speier, et al and even Dave Kingman. It wasn't hard and St Louis remained as a 2.

Question to the many unhappy fans: why stay with something that has moved away from what you want?
There are 28 other teams not including the BlueOnes down south, isn't someone impressing you? Or are you happy to be miserable? All the NL teams come to SF at least for one series: get good seats and see your new team maul your old team.
Don't be miserable, life has enough downs on its own without manufacturing another. Or start with a 2nd fav, they may pull you in as you like what they are doing. It's not disloyal to change something as superficial as a sports team when they aren't in agreement with your wants.
Think about what the A's and the Raiders have done to their fans, and remember, it's a business not a family.
    Be happy, if you can.

    1. I guess armchair GM'ing is one of many games within the game. Part of the fun of being a fan is proclaiming what you would or wouldn't do if you were the GM and then crowing when you were proved right(at least in your mind). I mean, that's pretty much the whole point of this blog if I'm honest.

    2. And no, you won't ever see me writing a blog devoted to the Dodgers.

    3. I'd never thought I would see the day where I'd say Jed York is a better owner than Greg Johnson but, I think it has happened. I used to be a big time armchair GM for the 49ers until Lynch and Shanahan came along

  10. The Giants put Estrada and Taylor Rogers on waivers?
