Game Wrap 8/30/2024: Giants 3 Marlins 1

Matt Chapman's 3-run double in the 8'th inning was all the scoring the Blake Snell and two relievers needed for a win.  Key Lines:

Mike Yastrzemski RF- 1 for 1, 3 BB.  BA= .242.  Melvin shook up the lineup and put YtY in the leadoff spot.  He responded by getting on base 4 times.

Matt Chapman 3B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .246.  Heliot Ramos deserves mention for a great PA without which Chapman would not have come to the plate in the 8'th inning.  Ramos took two almost perfect pitches from former Giants Mike Baumann RHP one of which was probably a ball per the TV strike zone.  With a 3-2 count he had to expand his zone on the outside corner but was finally able to hold up on on diving slider.  Michael Conforto DH followed by striking out on 3 pitches which his bat did not come within 6 inches of.  Chapman then came up with 2 outs and the bases-loaded and delivered his game-winning double.

Blake Snell LHP- 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 8 K's, GO/AO= 7/3.  ERA= 3.56.  When Snell gave up a run in the 7'th inning it looked like he might well end up on the short end of a 1-0 final score.  Before that he was all but unhittable using more changeups than usual.

Tyler Rogers RHP and Ryan Walker(Save(5)) pitched scoreless 8'th and 9'th innings respectively.  At this point it looks Walker is the presumptive Closer going into 2025.

Mason Black RHP gets the call up and tries for a series win this evening against Edward Cabrera RHP.

Churn Watch:

In a shocking move, Thairo Estrada cleared waivers and was outrighted to AAA Sacramento.   Brett Wisely IF got the call up to replace Estrada as the Giants apparently feel Marco Luciano needs more salt.  Tyler Matzek LHP was released.  Taylor Rogers LHP is still on the active roster.

  1. One guy you didn't mention in your recap was RYAN WALKER..Has there been a better reliever in baseball the past month/40 days? I doubt it.. Last 18 appearances , something like 20 IP and 1 ER, 2W, 5 Saves..a WHIP down near .5....Amazing and dependable....That said, the Giants need to find spots for DOVAL to pitch to regroup his trade value..

Seeing what the Giants did to ESTRADA, is there any reason the horrible CONFORTO should get another single AB? With the season down the drain, I feel the same with Yaz and Wade..But, the Master Architect of PO teams must have his reasons..He needs to decide the goal for the next month..

So, does SNELL opt out? Me thinks he can get a High priced long term contract after his 2nd half performance,..which has been amazing...,I'd love a top two of Webb and SNell for next year but me think it's a dream......Which means for 2025, the Giants rotation before any moves is again WEBB and alot of question marks but that'/s a story for the off-season.

    1. Well, I did day Walker is the presumptive Closer for next season but you are right. We haven't said enough about how dominant and resilient he's been.

    2. Should they raise the white flag before they are officially eliminated?

    3. Does the fact that Estrada and Matzek have cleared waivers and Rogers has not mean someone is interested in him?
Seems that the Cubs have an interest and they are on a run, but do they have a chance? Or would they like having him next year for $12MM and about $2MM for the rest of this year.

    4. I am pretty sure they already raised the "white flag". Rogers not "clearing waivers" doesn't mean anything except no other teams want to take on his next season's salary. Players put on waivers don't have to be released if nobody claims them.

  2. I am sure players on other teams going through this type of protical feep like crap.
But why do I as a old freeking dude at 73 being a Giants fan for 60 plus years really dislike thsi Giant management group?
Beyond the fact that some players make gajillions of dollars WTF do these guys being passed throughs likes chattels?
I really dislike this current version of Giants Management.
Doc, I have laments over the the Zaid yeARS > THAT HE WOULD NOT KNOW WHAT A BASEBALL PLAYER LOOKS LIKE IF IT BIT HIM ON THE ASS.

    1. I almost hit the button on you here, Richard in Winnepeg, but I applaud you feeling compassion for the players. I just hope they were upfront with Andrew Knapp when they signed him the the gig was likely only for 2 or 3 days, to point out just one example of The Churn and how it works. As for placing players on waivers hoping another team is willing to take on salary to win now, every team does it, but when I looked at Taylor Rogers' pitching line from tonight I the thought that came straight out of my brain was maybe his mind wasn't completely on pitching. Maybe he was thinking about how the team really wishes he and his contract would go away?

  3. Although the disheartened fans are calling for the firing of everyone from Johnson to Zaidi to Putila to Melvin and maybe the Farm Director and the Scouts, too, that's not going to happen.
But, should a scapegoat be required, would it most likely be the Manager since you can't fire the Team?
And, should That happen, would the Giants pick a Home favorite like the 3rd Base Coach although his last gig ended in ignomy?

    1. I think there may be some offseason reworking of the coaching staff but I don't see either FZ or Melvin being let go. A big part of why I think that is I think ownership sees them as a package deal the deal is they were given 3 years to work with. Ownership is not going to bail on that after one year. They might after next season is still no signs of progress. I believe ownership will look at the graduations of Ramos, Fitz, Birdsong and Harrison as well as prospects like Diego Velasquez, Lisbel Diaz and Bryce Eldridge and see definite signs of organizational progress and I don't disagree with that.

    2. Doc I pretty much agree with your take. I'm somewhere in the middle.wuth the job FZ and Bomel have done. FZ deserves credit for the improving farm system, the last couple of drafts look promising, as well as promising international signings. I remember giants owner Greg Johnson stating how happy he was about the farm system progression on a TK podcast giving FZ the credit.. I also think that ownership would look bad letting FZ and Bomel after just one season..

    3. Sadly you are right and what you say is true. There is very little chance that either FZ or BoMel get fired and there has finally been some signs of life with some of the players FZ either drafted or developed. There have also been so many failures and it has taken much too long but by giving them one more year it is possible they make the playoffs in 2025.

That is my fear, that we are either going to have to wait until the end of next year to fire both or we make the playoffs meaning both will likely be around even longer. I think we have seen enough to know that neither is performing in their roles to expectations and both have raised enough red flags over the years to make it very hard to trust and believe in them.

It isn’t fun being a fan of this team right now. The decision making top to bottom is perplexing. The trade deadline was a complete dumpster fire. Snell is opting out and we will get nothing for him when I’m pretty sure any GM other than FZ could have gotten at least Connor Norby! They are likely to give Chapman way too much money and too many years. Camilo and now Rogers and the bullpen management in general. Luciano and Bart and Matos and guys like Thairo who were supposed to be dudes that FZ found with his magic spreadsheets. BoMel having no clue how to win a game in extra innings. I am not looking forward to at least one more year of more of the same.

  4. Many good outfielders, unfortunately without corner power, other than Ramos, where will it come from?
Encarnación? McCray? Both have abysmal OBP.
Luciano? He won't have to field ground balls in the OF, just get in front of them.
Matos? Let him play with the Giants for the rest of the year and see.
Fitzgerald has arm and speed to play RF, maybe get Kim for SS, and maybe Schmitt can lay off bad pitches and play 2B?
