Game Wrap 8/14/2024: Braves 13 Giants 2

Robbie Ray LHP hit the first two batters he faced, walked in a run and gave up a grand slam HR in a disaster start that lasted 0.2 IP.  By that time it was all over but the shouting.  Key Lines:

Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 2 for 4, HR(14).  BA= .315.  Fitzgerald continues his ROY surge.  At this point finding a core for the future may be the only measure of a successful season left.  Fitz appears to have established himself as part of that core.

Sean Hjelle RHP- 3.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.67.  Hjelle shows his versatility going more than 3 IP.  Is he a future SP?

Robbie Ray LHP- 0.2 IP, 1 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 2 K, 2 HBP.  ERA= 6.00.  The odds of him opting out of next year's contract just went down.  If he doesn't he's a Giant through 2026, barring a trade, of course.

With the Loss, the Giants fall 4.5 games behind in the Wild Card Playoff race.

Logan Webb RHP tries to prevent the 4-game sweep tomorrow afternoon facing Max Fried LHP.

Churn Watch:

Grant McCray OF was added to the 40-man roster and activated to the 26-man roster.  Marco Luciano IF was optioned back to AAA Sacramento.  I am not sure McCray is ready for this, but he had to be added to the 40-man roster this offseason anyway.  If Luciano was not going to get PA's with the Giants he needed to be sent down.  The Jorge Soler trade is looking more and more like a huge mistake, possibly costing the Giants a playoff spot.  That trade might be grounds for FZ to be replaced all by itself.

  1. Thought the Giants would face plant against the Tigers, was just delayed a little..FZ's nonsensical strategy (Including the give away of Soler when the lineup was finally making some sense) at the deadline is all too apparent..no replenishing of the system and no chance at the POs with a Pop Gun offense and a rotation, as expected by most but legend in his own mind FZ, to be two aces and then question marks the rest of the way for this year. Time to ditch and/or sit the vets and just give the kids playing time in another lost season (except for Ramos and Fitz)...But McCRay? And i like the kid and his future alot but??

  2. robbie ray looked he was pitching hurt tonight. velocity was down and was grimacing off the field tonight. as for farhan it's game over for him. his roster mismanagement after the break is about to cost him job and this is the series that has me on the fire farhan train.

  3. Here we go with the giants yet again ruining the development of another young player. Bart, matos, ramos(who got lucky because JHL got injured otherwise he might have never gotten an extended shot), Schmidt, and now Luciano. This team expects every rookie to be posey or they get benched or sent down. It’s insane

    1. Wouldn’t worry about Matos development yet but yeah Farhan does ruin the young guys development by rushing them to the majors way too soon when they aren’t ready and costing them valuable devopment in the minors. Matos is still super young. Farhan was an idiot for calling him up so early and expecting stuff from him.

  4. I'll wait till the end of the season to have an opinion on whether FZ should be replaced or not. But I was disappointed that the FO didn't show a strong direction to buy or sell at the trade deadline. Instead they sold a little- Soler, Cobb and bought Canha.. FZ did say on knbr a few weeks ago.if the team didn't start playing better he wanted to take a look at more young players and thats the direction they seem to be taking, which is not a bad thing. Not sure if fans who heard that took him seriously. When a team has a goal of winning and looking at young players at the same time, they are walking a fine line. Based on the teams record at the trade deadline, I'm not sure if I would have been happy if FZ started trading prospects for immediate help maybe the best course was to just let the season play out since they have a rotation led by Snell, Webb, and Ray..I think Ray should be better next year since pitchers coming off TJ usually struggle with control in the beginning.

    1. What you say here is true, but FZ also said he thought he had the best rotation in baseball and that would be enough to carry them to the playoffs. His stated reason for trading Soler as to give Luciano more AB's at the MLB level. That lasted about 2 games and Soler's bat has yet to really be replaced in the lineup. Just a baffling management of the trade deadline, IMO.

    2. I'm hoping this will humble Greg Johnson this off-season. I haven't liked the he's handled the day to operations and needs to change course. As Jed York said once, you don't fire owners

    3. Doc, we can’t take any stock into anything Farhan says. This is the guy who excitedly proclaimed Luciano the starting shortstop for this team this season in September last year when it was clear to anyone who paid attention that Luciano wasn’t ready due to all the time he’s missed in the minors because he’s so injury prone.

    4. For the record, Farhan ruined Bart through mismanaging his devlopment by rushing him to the majors before he was ready. Bart was doing pretty darn good in the minors with the power, but he missed a lot of time due to injury and it was clear he was a bit streaky and struck out a bit much and just needed more seasoning, like this was a guy who looked great in the minors in
his short time but clearly he needed more polish. What does Farhan do? Drafts another catcher in the first round and rushes Bart to the big leagues, tossing him in with the sharks to sink or swim since Bart wasn’t his pick he wasn’t his problem. That’s why Bart got traded this year, because he was out of options because Farhan rushed him to the majors and 40 man roster when it was clear to amateurs like me that he wasn’t ready. And to make matters worse, he signs an injury prone back up catcher who he thought he got for a steal because he has pop but this guy misses every year with injuries so what happens this year? Out with injury all year. And Bart, who would’ve been a perfect compliment to the hitting challenged Bailey (Bailey couldn’t hit worth a lick in the minors either) and honestly Bart would be starting over Bailey now if he was with us. But now Bart is with the Pirates with 10 home runs and an over .500 slugging percentage in 150 at bats. Yeah small sample size but that’s the kind of power potential he flashed in the minors
Before Farhan robbed him of his development

    5. Doc i listened to the trade deadline presser again, and you're right if FZ was a strong buyer he should have tried harder to acquire another bat and kept Solar. Maybe having a good rotation should have been enough to acquire offensive help like the Mariners who acquired Arozarema and Turner. Interesting that he talked mainly about giving young players more opportunities and less about playoff chances. He sounded like a GM looking more toward 2025 to me. If the Giants falls just short of the playoffs then I'll be upset as to why FZ wasn't more aggressive at the deadline. .Then again big deadline trades don't always work. Look at the pirates how they've slumped.

  5. The one thing I like about Farhan ( I dislike everything else) is that he doesn’t want to trade away his young guys. But based off his 6 year history, he’s clearly not the right person to run this team and to add the right veteran pieces to this team. Also he hasn’t proven that he’s even capable of acquiring positions of need for the team other than minor league deals and discount bargain deals with injury prone players or players coming off poor seasons. I just hope the next guy we hire doesn’t trade away all the young guys

  6. How about the Joey Bart trade?!?!? His numbers in half the AB’s are better than Baileys! Bailey is obviously better with the glove but we could have had both and I bet Bart could play a little 1B and give the slumper Lamar some needed rest. Instead Farhan thought Tom Murphy was a difference maker enough to trade Bart for peanuts.

The way this team is managed reminds me of how I manage my fantasy baseball teams when I traded my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks the year before. No stars so you have to make a few good trades usually and you have to draft well which are two things Farhan sucks at.

Will it all be enough to fire him at the end of the year or sooner? I feel like if he were a manager he would be gone but because of his title and how much trust ownership has put in him he will get another year. I hope I am wrong
