Down on the Farm: 4/30/2023

AAA:  Oklahoma City Dodgers defeated the Sacramento River Cats 9-4(Game 1 of DH, 7 innings).

Cal Stevenson CF- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .308.
Colton Welker DH- 2 for 2, BB.  BA= .276.
Shane Matheny LF- 2 for 2, SF.  BA= .247.

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats beat the Oklahoma City Dodgers 5-1(Game 2 of DH, 7 innings).

Heliot Ramos CF- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB, SB(6).  BA= .298.
Colton Welker DH- 1 for 1, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .300.
Kyle Harrison LHP- 3.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 7 K.  ERA= 4.02.

Heliot Ramos sure seems to have made strides since his disastrous last season.  Walks are still an issue for Kyle Harrison.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels at Bowie Baysox postponed due to weather.

A+:  Vancouver Canadians shut down the Eugene Emeralds 2-0(10 innings).

Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Nick Sinacola RHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 1.06.

Whisenhunt's A+ debut is probably the biggest news from Down on the Farm today.  Giants Prospective on Twitter had him hitting 94-97 MPH with the FB to go with the devastating changeup.  Nice outing by Sinacola too.

A:  San Jose Giants pounded the Fresno Grizzlies 11-4.

Diego Velasquez 2B- 2 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .303.
Vaun Brown CF- 3 for 5.  BA= .500.

Daniel Blair RHP- 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.45.

  1. Pav's in his Giants talk podcast this week with Cole Kuiper said again Giants were so impressed with Patrick Bailey during spring, it's part of the reason He's now in AAA. He thinks we'll see him in the big leagues in the 2nd half. Wow! Also had interesting stuff about Carson Whisenhunt. He and Shawn Estes were marveling at his change up. Said he has the stuff to move up fast. Interesting stuff!

    1. Everyone is hyping Bailey up but he’s been a bust so far as an early first round pick. He’s been injury prone and hasn’t hit all that well, though he has a little pop and doesn’t strike out a ton. He’s OK with walks and batting average isn’t good, but people tend to grade him on a curve their because he’s a catcher. Apparently he’s a good defender. But so far he’s been a busy considering his draft pedigree. Even this season, everyone was so quick to over hype him up after an extremely small short season sample size of 30 at bats. By the way, his batting average for the year has quickly dipped below .300. Let’s give him more time to be healthy and play a full season before we call him up. Joey Bart got called up way too early by Farhan. Bart missed time with injury and barely played in the minors when they called him up. He clearly needed more time in the minors to limit the Ks and develop, but they called him up super fast which has been detrimental to him and the Giants. Calling Bailey up too early is totally a Farhan type of move, especially if he runs hot with the bat for only one week then Farhan will totally rush to call him up.

  2. Perhaps Harrison needs a "whisperer."
In a 1961 Spring Training game, after Sandy Koufax walked the first 3 batters on 12 pitches, catcher Norm Sherry went to the mound and suggested to Koufax to throw slightly less hard in order to improve his control. "Let them hit it!" The advice worked, Koufax struck out the side, and then went on to pitch seven no-hit innings.
Sherry is credited with turning Koufax's career around. He also said that Koufax threw even harder when he tried not to.
This has been reported in many sources including Ken Burn's DVD series on baseball history. It is well documented by googling it.

    1. I mean if Ken Burns documented it. Sounds easy enough, let's do it!
