Game Wrap 4/21/2023: Mets 7 Giants 0

The Giants managed just 5 hits in the game and never threatened to score.  For his part, Anthony DeSclafani RHP started off strong enough but got roughed up for 3 runs in the 5'th inning.  At that point the game was over for all practical purposes. The End.

  1. Reached the point where I’d like to see the Giants try to be sellers and gun for a top pick in the draft. I think the team is better than its current record but probably not good enough to make the playoffs even at full strength. Ideally I want to keep Webb, Doval, Estrada and maybe even Davis now as a core to build around. Players like Cobb and Disco would be guys I’d be offering up in hopes of netting some nice prospects in return if they can keep up their early season performances. Mets phone line open?

  2. i think it's time to bring up casey schmitt to the show. the season may already be in danger of falling off the rails and if may isn't any better, larry baer may have to intervene and find an interim manager.

    1. Felipe Alou, the 1994 NL Manager of the Year, is available – still a Giant Special Assistant to Baseball Operations, he lives in Boynton Beach, FL.
At 87 yo, to be 88 in May, Alou can be the oldest manager ever, eclipsing Connie Mack who retired at 87 years, 283 days old.

    2. Gabe Kapler is the perfect extension of FZ. Their entire organizational philosophy almost requires a manager like Kap. I have to think if one goes, they both go. I think it's a bit early for that(or a bit late depending on your point of view) but something ownership needs to evaluate and consider before they extend FZ's contract.

    3. The manager is rarely the problem, though they always end-up the fall-guy. Baseball games are won by the players the GM acquires. If the GM doesn't do his job, the manager can't win.

In 2003 the Padres went 64-98. That wasn't because Bruce Bochy couldn't manage. It was because they weren't very good and there wasn't a starting pitcher with an ERA (in a pitcher's park!!!) under 4.11 and their bullpen was a hot mess. They had a winning record the next year because they went a long way into fixing their pitching which, in turn, caused them to give up about 160 fewer runs...

Sound familiar? Because I'm thinking 2003 Padres and 2023 Giants have many of the same issues. The hitting is okay (we're 11th, the Padres were 12th). It's not great, but it's not the worst. The starting pitching for the Giants is a bit better, but the bullpen is probably worse. The Padres defense was better, but they were still bottom-half (#20).

  3. I think this is the second time this season that your Game Wrap is so short, if I am not wrong, or maybe I am recalling some recent Down On the Farm article(s).

Is it getting more often that there is nothing or a little to talk about the 2023 Giants?

I noticed that there was no pinching hitting or (position) player substitution at all by either team last night. The same nine batted. To me, that seems quite unusual these days.

    1. I mean, what more is there to write about this game?

    2. I agree with you, and that's the opposite of what a team would want - a team would want fans to think about it often, and talk about it, even in defeat.

    3. I should also add that my original comment was a reflection of the product on the field, and not of you, Doc.

  4. I drive around the Bay Area most weekdays at least a few hours each day and my radio is tuned to KNBR most of the time. The Warriors are in the playoffs and the NFL draft is coming up but even so this is the least I have ever heard them cover the Giants to start a season. If this was NY or any other major market they would be calling for heads but the interest level in this team across the board is lower than ever.

Energy levels at the games are about what you would expect at a poorly attended wake. I feel like I have been screaming from a mountain top over the last few years about how poorly this team is being constructed fearing that this is exactly where the team would end up. Where could this team be if we had just gone through a rebuild 5 years ago instead of this churn infested mediocre mess that was created?

Larry Baer and the owners have gone from people we used to have faith in running our favorite sports franchise to rivaling the Fishers in being some of the worst owners in sports. At this point I almost wish the Giants were headed to Vegas which at least would be giving them a proper death compared to this. This is pure misery and embarrassment. We deserve better!!!

    1. Might be a bit of an overreaction. I agree the team is close to unwatchable right now. Definitely time to reassess top to bottom drafting and player development strategies and philosophies. I am interested in how the Marlins progress compared to Giants over the next 2-3 years. I really wanted the Giants to hire Kim Ng as the GM.

    2. Do you think they made Zaidi sign two players being DFA'd by two of the worst teams in baseball? Alexander (A's) and Beatty (Royals) were not good enough to make those bad clubs. Yet there's Zaidi signing other team's trash... And have you forgotten the parade of MLB cast-offs Zaidi has churned through since he became GM?

Do you think owners made him sign all those bad players to churn, year-after-after? I really doubt the owners are involved in personnel or day-to-day operations in any way that meaningfully impacts the roster. That's all on Zaidi.

And he doesn't perform soon, his shelf life will become very short. Just ask Bobby Evans who ended up taking the fall for Sabean's later-period mistakes (never mind his own).

    3. I was hoping for Kim Ng also. MLB.com has the Giants farm system ranked #17 and the Marlins #18. I like the Marlins starting pitchers. Reassessing drafting and player development is important, and long overdue. Farm system hasn't been consistently producing solid MLB players for the past decade. That's caught up to them. Can Bart, Ramos, Villar, Hjellie, Beck, Wisely change that narrative? The Giants have some of their top prospects playing in AAA and AA, would like to see how they do before making a judgement on the farm system. I know 2019 1st round pick Hunter Bishop has been a bust, and is injured a lot. I don't know what to think of 2021 1st rd pick Will Bednar who's also hurt and rehabbing. Is he a case of being a bad draft pick or is it bad luck? The draft is such a crapshoot.

  5. Drew Smyly took a perfect game into the 8th against the Dodgers. The first hit was a swinging bunt that Smyly and the catcher collided going after the ball. Quite a collision. If either had given way, they might have gotten Peralta, also known as Freight Train.

    1. Smyly has always been a good pitcher when he is healthy. He's been injured a lot.

  6. The A's leaving the Bay Area really isn't a big deal. Afterall, Farhan has replicated them as the S.F. A's, so Oakland is redundant. The real tragedy is the Giants leaving Town. Apparently, they left along with Bochy, Sabean and company.
