Game Wrap 5/1/2023: Astros 7 Giants 3

Yet another bullpen meltdown broke open a tie game in the 7'th inning and the Giants were not able to recover.  Key Lines:

LaMonte Wade Jr 1B- 2 for 3, HR(6), BB.  BA= .260.  LMWJ singled to lead off the game.  Then drew a a walk with 1 out in the 3'rd ahead of Joc Pederson DH's laser shot HR to give the Giants a 2-1 lead.  LaMonte added a HR in the 7'th inning after the bullpen meltdown in the top of the innning.

Ross Stripling RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 6/2.  ERA= 6.10.  Stripling has pitched better since ditching a new version of his changeup.  The slider has emerged as an effective pitch which he is leaning on.  It would have been nice for him to go at least 1 more inning, especially given the dire straits the bullpen is in.  Maybe he was on a pitch count?  He threw just 73 pitches.  He has tended to go south quickly when he gets fatigued.

Sean Hjelle RHP- 1 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 10.13.  Hjelle got the final out of the 6'th inning in relief of Taylor Rogers LHP but couldn't get out of the 7'th in a bloodbath inning.  Not sure how he stays on the active roster after this but I just looked at the 40-man roster.  There is nobody to replace him with without an add/drop to the 40-man.  I had high hopes for Hjelle despite lackluster minor league numbers because he looked so good in his final two games last year and he's just such a unique talent.  Unfortunately it's not working out at this point.

Tristan Beck RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.  ERA= 6.00.  I know the ERA is not great but right now Tristan Beck should be ahead of Sean Hjelle on the bulk innings depth chart.

Anthony DeSclafani RHP tries to get the Giants back on the winning track tomorrow facing Hunter Brown RHP who has been electric for the Astros.  I don't think the Giants have faced Brown before which does not bode well for a positive outcome.

Injury Updates:

Brandon Crawford SS went on the IL after an MRI showed a grade 1 strain of his calf.

As expected, YtY went on the IL.  His MRI showed a grade 1 hammy strain which is better than anticipated after how it appeared yesterday.

Brett Wisely UT and Cal Stevenson OF were recalled from AAA Sacramento to fill the vacated active roster spots.

  1. with there being no reinforcements for hjelle, they are going to have to look at signing a free agent reliever off the street and get that person a few games in sacrmento before a call up.

  2. maybe you bring up cole waites or kenton winn as a stopgap but, they are going to have to looking at signing a free agent veteran reliever at this point.

  3. Dom Leone just opted out of his AAA deal and is reportedly pitching well.

  4. In the Giants 17 losses, they have had the lead 9 times but lost the game.
Their SP only got the loss once (Webb in the 7th inning April 17), but the other 8 times the Pen got the loss: the Rogers 2 each, Doval twice, Junis and Hjelle once each.
Just splitting those 8 losses would have given the Giants a 15-13 winning record.
FWIW, FZ signed Junis and one of the Rogers for 3 of the 9 come-from-ahead losses. The other 6 were given to someone who was signed by the Giants before FZ.

  6. Mauricio Dubon was talking mad sh*t about the Giants after tearing them up this game. He’s having a good year so far getting consistent playing time under Baker. Dubon said he wasn’t treated right with the Giants and thank God he’s with the Astros. Says the Astros treat the players like a family. Says he thought he would have gotten more playing time with the Giants. Giants traded him away for nothing and could use him now. Obviously the Giants aren’t a family organization anymore ever since Farhan and Kaplan took over. They look at players like stats on a paper and don’t treat them like humans. They’ll mistreat the players anyway they want as long as it gives them a slight advantage. Such a joke, no wonder Posey retired so quickly. He could see the writing on the wall. It’s still crazy to think Farhan has been running the team for 4 or more years and he still hasn’t been able to add a player to the team who can sell jerseys. Giants have always had a plethora of players every year who could sell jerseys from 2000 to until Farhan took over. Ever since he took over, the roster has been full of AAAA players and one year reclamation projects, sprinkler with some good players left over from previous regime. When they won 107 games, nearly all of the players from the previous regime had monster years even if they missed a lot of time due to injury.

    1. There are several problems with Dubon's narrative starting with he just wasn't very good when he was with the Giants by anybody's metrics. The Giants have received good word of mouth from multiple ex-players which helped them sign subsequent players. Dubi is on a hot streak but we're only a month into the season. I looked up his stat line in Fangraphs and despite the great start, it only positive contribution to his fWAR total is on D.

    2. It was disappointing to hear that from Dubon . It seems like he should appreciate that the Giants gave him a chance to play in the big leagues. Dusty is a good hitting coach so that helps Dubon. Will he get as much playing time once Jose Altuve comes back?

    3. While he was playing good defense, he was hitting .239 with a .245 OBP. Then he hit .208 witha .254 while playing good defense for the Astros. In fact his career dWAR of 2.3 exceeds his career oWAR of 1.5

As for his hitting .303, he's on a roll right now. But despite that his OBP and OPS are not exactly stellar.

What I find to be more interesting is Dubon's trajectory does show something about Zaidi's management, in seems (to me) that defense doesn't (apparently) matter to him. Which is odd for a person whose supposedly metrics driven as defense is more consistent than offense and if they don't score, they can't win...

  7. Yeah it’s still too early to make statements about next season, but the Giants roster is so bad currently and they have so many old inconsistent injury prone pitchers and not enough pillars and no stars or people you can count on and way too many wasted roster spots on scrubs, it’s already looking like next season will be a continuation of this season with them being one of the worst teams. Obviously Farhan won’t get fired this year even though he deserves it, but I pray he gets fired after fielding one of the worse teams next year.

    1. It's also still too early to write off this season, IMO.
