Down on the Farm: 4/22/2023

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats edged out the Round Rock Express 3-2.

Mitch Haniger DH- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .308.

Kade McClure RHP- 3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.54.

I doubt Haniger is going to be activated before he plays in the field but the bat seems about ready.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels blanked the Erie Seawolves 2-0.

Hayden Cantrell 2B- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .270.

Williams moves up from A+.  Rooting hard for him.  Teng has 25 K's in just 11.2 IP with 4 BB's on the season so far.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds smacked the Hillsboro Hops 8-1(first game of DH, 7 innings).

Wade Meckler CF- 2 for 3, HR(1), BB.  BA= .512.

Meckler chose a great time for his first HR of the season, bottom of the 6'th inning, bases loaded.

Grant McCray CF- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .130.

Dylan Cumming RHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Onil Perez and Jose Ramos are putting themselves on the prospect map.  Still rooting for Suarez to break out.

  1. All the Giant MiLB teams are at .500 or above.
One is leading its league, one is tied, and a third is leading its division.
Even the one that is supplying the Giants almost daily is holding even, scoring more runs than they're giving up.
Meckler played his 2nd game in CF – McCray has been playing center mostly but perhaps his poor performance at the plate has the Giants thinking that Meckler may make it up first so let's see how he handles CF. Although McCray has shown much more power than the smaller Meckler, the latter got the first Dinger this year and leads in doubles.

  2. In Richmond, Ismael Mungia, CF B/T: L/L 5' 10"/158 Age: 24, opened strong, went into a 0-fer drought, then had a 1-4 April 16 to pull himself to .152 from .138, and has gone 10-18 since including a HR to pull his average to .300!
He should be in the CF mix, also, with Slater back to handle the RHB, the need for Johnson is lessened.

    1. Bryce Johnson, Ismael Munguia and Wade Meckler all are very similar players. Smaller size, high contact, low power with speed to steal a base and cover CF. That profile has been of limited value in the information era but may enjoy a resurgence with new rules making it easier to steal bases.

    2. You'd like a Judge or a Nimmo in CF, but good D and acceptable OBP can could prevail over less fielding without a lot of hitting, aka YtY/Slater.
      But maybe not for FZ.
There was a thought that McCray might be "it" but he's having his troubles, while a very young Matos is more than holding his own in AA. He could be the story for, hmm, 2024.

    3. In terms of hit tool they're very different though. Johnson has way more Ks than walks over his career. Munguia doesn't K but doesn't walk either so he's gonna have to hit for a high average to be productive but I don't think he has enough of a hit tool. That's why I'm way higher on Meckler. He's shown he can walk and not K a lot. That kind of hit tool and profile plays.

    4. Eh, you can split hairs but their are all basically the same profile. The walks will come harder for Meckler at higher levels when pitchers figure out they can challeng him and not pay a price.

    5. ...unless he develops more power.

    6. I suppose anything can happen with Meckler, but these rates tend to remain pretty constant by age 22-23 so that's why I'd put Meckler more in the Cal Stevenson camp then Johnson and Munguia. In practical terms, Meckler and Stevenson profile more as 4th OF types, Johnson and Munguia are more 5th/6th OF types.

    7. He's in A ball. Let's see what he does in AA. I will say FZ must be accumulating this type of prospect for a reason so maybe he sees an undervalued skill set here?

    8. Doesn't Johnson have the most swing-and-miss of all these non-power CFers?
Luis Matos may well solve the CF problem as he has shown some speed and his ZiPS projections are for double-digit HRs: "Matos has plus-plus bat speed and the wheels to stay in center field, with only his aggressive approach holding him back from the 55 FV tier."
He is off to the best start of any of the potential CFers.

Which begs the question: what's with Vaun Brown, CF, Richmond Flying Squirrels?

March 7, 2023: Brown was scratched from the Giants' Cactus League lineup Tuesday due to knee soreness, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
March 10, 2023: Brown (knee) said Friday that he should be able to return to spring games in about a week, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
April 10: Double-A Richmond placed Brown on its 7-day injured list Thursday while he recovers from minor right knee surgery, Jim Callis of MLB.com reports.
He was diagnosed with left patellar tendinitis in early March and it was subsequently reported that he would miss about a week, but Callis is reporting that Brown needed minor surgery on his other knee. Either way, it sounds like Brown will return at some point this season for the Flying Squirrels, but this setback could impact his ability to push for a big-league debut in 2023.
ESPN MLB Injuries: Brown is considered Day-To-Day according to Callis.
