Scouting the 2023 Draft: Colin Houck

We won't be posting draft reports too often as keeping up with Game Wraps and Down on the Farm is hard enough, but Prospects Live released a new mock draft that has the Giants taking Colin Houck, a HS SS from Georgia at #16 overall.

Colin Houck SS.  DOB:  9/30/2004.  B-R, T-R.  6'2", 190 lbs.  Two-sport athlete but committed to Mississippi St for baseball only.  Believed to be signable if drafted in the first round.  Best tool is arm which MLB rates at 60 which is strong enough to play at SS.  May lose range as body fills out but bat should carry at 3B if that happens. Right now he is projected to stick at SS.

Simple, direct swing should allow him to access his current plus power.  The frame can easily carry more weight.  Draft stock is rising.  Prospects live has potential Giants target, Kyle Teel C going to the White Sox one pick earlier at #15. Another potential target, Tommy Troy SS is at #18. The Giants have strongly favored college hitters in the first rounds but also are not afraid to gamble on ceiling.

  1. April 10 I am making my selection -Enrique Bradfield Jr. I think he has elite tools and the only reason he is falling to us is because he doesn't have any power. Will finally have a plus defender in CF, and with the new rules he will steal an absurd number of bases from the leadoff spot.

    1. That's an interesting idea. Players with Bradfield's skill set who have made an impact in recent years are few and far between, but it's possible the new rules may bring them back.

  2. Is Bryce Johnson a prototype for this? How many ABs does he need to be a guide? Has his CF defense been better than, say, YtY or Slater? Has Kuiper in his play-by-play pointed out a 5-★ play?
