Down on the Farm: 4/25/2023

AAA:  Oklahoma City Dodgers topped the Sacramento River Cats 5-4.

Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .344.  .
Casey Schmitt SS- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .330.
Kyle Harrison LHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 8 K's.

I thought Ramos looked a lot better during his callup than a year ago. Hopefully he can continue to build his skills and confidence.  He's still only 23 yo. Schmitt seems to be getting the majority of his starts at SS.  Is it his primary position now?  Harrison continues to be plagued by walks but the K rate continues to be elite.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Bowie Baysox 4-2.

Patrick Bailey C- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .333.
Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 2 for 4, 2B, 3B.  BA= .302.
Andy Thomas DH- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .135.
Simon Whiteman LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .302.
Wil Jensen RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.61.
Juan Sanchez LHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K. ERA= 1.17.
Raymond Burgos LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(1).  ERA= 0.00.

There was some buzz that maybe Bailey would get the call if Joey Bart hit the IL but apparently Genoves is first in line.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds pounded the Vancouver Canadians 12-3.

Grant McCray CF- 0 for 4, BB, 3 SB(7).  BA= .130.
Aeverson Arteaga SS- 1 for 2, 2 BB, SB(2).  BA= .204.
Logan Wyatt 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .313.
Adrian Sugastey C- 3 for 5, HR(1).  BA= .244.
Robert Emery DH- 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .333.
Damon Dues 2B- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .278.
Nick Sinacola RHP- 4 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.38.
Spencer Bivens RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.25.

A:  Fresno Grizzlies beat the San Jose Giants 5-1.

Carter Howell CF- 3 for 5. BA= .303.
Diego Velasquez 2B- 2 for 5.  BA= .265.
Alexander Suarez RF- 1 for 3, 3B.  BA= .222.
Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 3.29.

Whisenhunt's dominant 4 innings makes him the Giants minor league player of the day.  Per Joe Ritzo on Twitter, he was able to better establish the FB which ran 93-96 MPH which set up the elite changeup.

  1. Interesting note I heard on the athletic podcast - giants wanted Crawford to go on the IL when he hurt his ribs. I assume Schmitt would have got the call up that's why he's playing so much SS. Giants are lining up options at SS just in case Crawford really is done (he hit that 3 run HR the next day )

    1. I wonder if the current management would have moved Matt Wiliams back to SS over Uribe, in order to get more offense.

More recently, would players like Blanco or Arias have a place on this year's team?

But it's not just us. LA is trying Mookie at SS as well. These days, a relative advantage can be had by getting more offense out of the traditionally premier defensive positions that are up the middle - C, SS and CF. If you have hitting out of all these 3 positions, even with offense expected from average LF, RF, 2B and 1B, which should not be theoretically hard to obtain, you can be dominant offensively.

And the most direct or convenient way to add offense that way may to be try out a 3B at SS, an OF at C, and a LF/RF at CF.

It will be interesting to see how such mid/late (professional) career conversions would hold out defensively, over the course of a season, or two.

And if successful at a high enough rate, will we see draft priorities trending that way? Ironically, they say a SS is usually the best athlete in high school or college, and it used to be that he might be moved to 2B, 3B or OF. This new trend would stop that, and return him, who might have been a SS at high school but is now a 3b in college or minor/major leagues, back to SS, for example.

  2. So they have had an automated strike zone in the MiLB for a while. They narrowed the strike zone this year from 19 inches to 17 inches. In the past, if you clipped that huge strike zone with the ball, that was a strike. Not this year, which has increased walk-rates in the MilB. There are some other issues such as the strike zone height which they've decreased as well during this trial period.

So while he's been a bit wild in the past, right now it's really hard to tell right now as pitchers are having to adjust to a major change in the strike zone.

  3. As much as Bart is injured I would start grooming him for 1st base and bring up Bailey as soon as possible
