The Giants stormed back from a 3-run Blown Save to score four in the 10'th inning and held on for another Win in Coors Field. Key Lines:
Buster Posey C- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .263. Buster has had a great road trip. He's hitting .357 over his last 7 games and .346 over his last 15.
Alex Dickerson LF- 4 for 5, 2B. BA= .342. Dickerson can hit. He's always been able to hit. Just needs to stay healthy.
Mike Yastrzemski RF- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(7). BA= .252. Big game for YtY. Were it not for his oppo-field HR in the 9'th, Will Smith's Blown Save would have been a Loss.
Kevin Pillar CF- 2 for 5. BA= .232. Pillar made several diving catches to support the pitching. UZR may not like Pillar, but he sure passes the eye test out there. While they weren't quite impossible catches out there, not every CF makes them.
Drew Pomeranz LHP- Pomeranz kept his pitch count down through 5 shutout innings so it looked like he would have a rare Quality Start an possibly do even deeper into the game. Alas, a leadoff walk followed by a single in the 6'th brought Bochy out with the hook. It was a great 5 innings, but still just 5 innings. I guess we'll take it, but it sure puts the strain on the bullpen.
Will Smith LHP- 1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, 2 HR, W(3-0), BS(2). ERA= 2.75. Smith relies heavily on his curveball which is the toughest pitch to throw consistently in Coors Field. We'll chalk this one up to the Coors Effect, but Smith has not been quite the same since the All-Star Break.
Mark Melancon RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 4.05. Melancon hasn't been very good lately, but his velocity and movement with the cutter was the best I remember seeing in his entire Giants tenure. Let's see him do that for several appearances in a row, though.

The Win was the Giants 4'th in a row and 10'th out of 12 in July. They are 3.0 games back in the Wild Card race passing the Padres to get out of last place in the NL West. They are tied with the Rockies with identical 46-49 records.

Shaun Anderson makes tries his luck with Coors Field for the first time to try to close out a 4-game sweeeeep today against the Reeling Rockies.

Hope Smith's All Star game doesn't have some dreaded curse attached to it.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing more exciting in all of sports, in any sports, than a come from behind win. Think of Arnold Palmer sinking birdies to claim a trophy on the last day of a major, think of a horse coming from 8 lengths back to nip the wire. Giants have the big MO - momentum.
