Game Wrap 7/15/2019(Game 2 of DH): Giants 2 Rockies 1

Solo HR's by Steven Vogt and Brandon Crawford gave Dereck Rodriguez and the bullpen all the runs they needed to complete a sweep of the doubleheader in Coor's Field.  Key Lines:

Steven Vogt C- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(3).  BA= .265.  Vogt led off the 5'th inning with a solo blast to give DRod and the Giants the lead.  What a great catching tandem he makes with Buster Posey!

Brandon Crawford SS- 1 for 3, HR(9), BB. BA= .240.  Crawford went B2B with Vogt in the 4'th to give him a 3 HR/9 RBI day.  I believe the 9 RBI's either set or ties a SF Giants record for RBI's in a doubleheader.  Two NY Giants had 11 and 10 respectively.

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.99.  DRod was also on fire with terrific command of multiple pitches but a plus curveball was his big pitch of the game to dominate for 5 innings.  With Drew Pomeranz apparently moving to the bullpen, DRod may be the 5'th SP now.

Bullpen- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  The big 4 of the bullpen all did their jobs with Sam Dyson looking unhittable with 3 K's and Will Smith recording his 24'th Save against the middle of the Rockies' lineup.

The double Wins were the Giants 8'th and 9'th in 11 games in July and gets them to just a 3.0 game deficit in the Wild Card race after the Dodger obliterated the Phillies 16-2.  California Dreaming!

The Giants have not announced a SP for tomorrow evening's game.  Choices are Drew Pomeranz or Derek Holland or a full on bullpen game.  Pomeranz has not pitched since the All-Star break so it's probably him, but if so, why wouldn't they just announce it?

Teaser:  I'm pretty sure I know why Billy Hayes is out as Manager in San Jose.  I will reveal my theory in the Down on the Farm post.

  1. A brief commentary on Farhan Zaidi:
The teams, Mariners and Mets, whose GM's did the most wheeling-dealing in the off-season are both out of their respective races.
The teams, Phillies and Padres who already figured to be pretty good, with the BIG splash signings, Harper and Machado, are sputtering along and not a lock even to be a wild-card.
Other than starting with Reed and Joe in the OF, FZ has done nothing embarrassing or compromising to the future, while adding some interesting pieces with little risk or cost.
Bochy has nursed the legacy fixtures, juggled the reinforcements, and made gestures to the 21st century to put the current "best team in baseball" on the field with a 12 game 10-2 run who can win big or small.
Sure, this is likely to end up like their last "best team in baseball" -- 2016 at the All Star Break -- but you gotta think he's got a handle on what needs to be done...

  2. The story of The Bad News Bears - did they win their Little League crown?

Don't tell these Giants they are tool old (Posey), too broken down (Posey and Dickerson),
that t hey are AAAA players (Yaz, Slater, and D-Rod), mere platoon pieces (Solano).

This team has something more valuable than mere talent - it has HEART!

They are playing like Champions. So what they are 4 games behind in the Wild Card. They just won 10 of 12 and every spot in the line-up except for Panik is hitting. Would you want to play this team in a one game playoff??

The Brewers and Padres - those two "stacked" teams just lost a series each to the Bad News Bears.

My hunch - we see a partial sell-off, Z. finds another infielder to "give Panik a rest and time to find himself" and this team goes for it.

I said it before - what is important is not the record so much as the TREND and this team is trending.

Can they keep this up? They do not have to win 8 out of every 10 games as they have just done but I can see them winning 6.5 out of 10. They just showed us (SSS) they are better than the Padres and Brewers and the took a pair from the Rockies in their home park.

I'd like to see the best pitcher from the minors take the Pomeranz spot in the rotation.

Avelino and Green - call up one or both.
