DrB's 2019 Giants Top 50 Prospects: Midseason Review

I'll try to make this quick.  Here's a midseason review of my preseason top 50 Giants prospects. We'll grade them out as Stock Up, Stock Down or Stock Stable.  Note:  I will try to post a new Top 20 or 30 before the All-Star Break is over.  Stock rating here does not necessarily correlate with a change in ranking.

1.  Joey Bart C.  Got off to hot start in San Jose before an HBP broke his hand.  He has struggled since returning from the IL but that is reportedly due to lingering discomfort in the hand.  Stock Stable.

2.  Heliot Ramos OF.  Missed significant time with a leg injury but otherwise performing above expectations for San Jose at age 19.  Stock Up.

3.  Marco Luciano SS.  Mashing the AZL as a 17 yo.  Stock Up.

4.  Logan Webb RHP.  Wildly successful start to season in AA, but now on Suspension for PED. We'll assume it was an honest mistake and won't happen again.  Stock Stable.

5.  Melvin Adon RHP.  Solid performance as Closer for AA Richmond.  Stock Stable.

6.  Gregory Santos RHP.  Spent time on IL but performing well for Augusta in a SSS.  Stock Stable.

7.  Shaun Anderson RHP.  Solid performance for the MLB Giants.  Stock Up, but technically graduated, so will be off the midseason list.

8.  Aramis Garcia C.  Continues to show toonder in the bat to go with solid catching skills.  Contact still an issue.  Stock Stable.

9.  Chris Shaw LF/1B.  Got dissed with an assignment back in AA, but went about his business and earned a promo to AAA.  Stock Stable.

10.  Ryan Howard IF.  Struggled at the plate in AAA despite a seriously friendly hitting environment. Stock Down.

11.  Drew Ferguson OF.  Rule 5 Draft pick I really liked but had a weak spring and was sent back to the Astros.  Stock Down and out of the organization.

12.  Travis Bergen LHP- Another Rule 5 Draft pick who stuck with the MLB club and was pitching great until hitting the IL.  Has struggled in Sacramento during his rehab assignment.  Giants will have to bring him back to SF or send him back to the Blue Jays soon.  Stock Up, for now.

13.  Garrett Williams LHP.  Ueven results in AA but his last outing was a gem.  Stock Even.

14.  David Villar 3B.  Decent numbers for San Jose, but that is a bit of a letdown for this ranking.  Stock Down.

15.  Alexander Canario OF.  Disappointing placement back in AZL but mashed his way to an early promotion to S-K.  Slow start there, but a possible breakout game last night.  Stock Stable, but breakout watch.

16.  Jalen Miller 2B- Strong start to season in AA, but slumped badly in June.  Stock Down.

17.  Heath Quinn OF.  Season once again marred by injuries and lost time.  Stock Down.

18.  Sean Hjelle RHP.  Conservative placement in Augusta but earned a promo and has pitched well for SJ.  Stock Up.

19.  Jose Marte RHP.  Missed quite a bit of time on IL.  Mixed results in SSS.  Stock Stable.

20.  Jacob Gonzalez 3B.  Not really showing progress after repeat assignment to Augusta. Stock Down.

21.  Sandro Fabian OF.  Apparently injured in the spring.  Just finished rehab assignment and is back in SJ.  Mixed results in SSS.  Stock Down.

22.  Manuel Geraldo SS.  Very slow start in SJ(He's always been a slow starter).  Play improved in June.  Stock Down.

23.  Diego Rincones OF.  Raking the NWL in Salem-Keizer. Stock Up.

24.  Juan De Paula RHP.  Haven't seen much of him in boxscore.  Is he still in the organization?  Stock Down.

25.  Camilo Doval RHP.  Like last year in Augusta, got blown out in his first appearances of the season in SJ.  Has mostly pitched well since with strong scouting reports re. velocity.  Stock Stable.

26.  Seth Corry LHP.  Strong K rates but still high BB rates in Augusta.  Stock Stable.

27.  Jacob Wong RHP.  Conservative placement in Augusta.  Earned the promo to SJ with a long string of hitless innings over 2 games.  Miked results in SSS in SJ.  Stock Stable.

28.  CJ Hinojosa IF.  I believe he is out of the organization. Stock Down and out.

29.  Tyler Beede RHP.  Back from the brink of oblivion with a pared down repertoire and a velocity spike.  Mixed results at MLB level, but good enough to get a longer leash.  Stock way Up, but now officially graduated after passing 50 MLB IP.

30.  Abiatal Avelino SS.  Strong offensive numbers in Sacramento but it just sillyball?  Stock Up.

31.  Jacob Heyward OF.  Strong start in Richmond but has tailed off lately. Stock Stable.

32.  Tyler Herb RHP.  Released. Stock Down and out.

33.  Aaron Bond OF.  Slow start and now out of the boxscores.  Injured?  Stock Down.

34.  Sam Wolff RHP.  Injuries, inconsistent performance, sketchy placements.  Stock Down.

35.  Patrick Ruotolo RHP.  Out of boxscores.  Injured?  Stock Down.

36.  Carlos Sano RHP.  Another pitcher who has disappeared.  Stock Down.

37.  Johneswhy Fargas OF.  Pretty good numbers for AA Richmond.  Stock Up.

38.  Bryce Johnson OF.  Finally got promo to AA.  Nice start in SSS.  Stock Up.

39.  Chase Johnson RHP.  Numbers better lately out of bullpen in Richmond.  Stock Up.

40.  Aaron Phillips RHP.  Uneven performance for SJ.  Stock Down.

41.  DJ Myers RHP.  Some strong numbers then disappeared.  Stock Down.

42.  JJ Santa Cruz LHP.  Washed out in SJ.  Pitching well for Augusta.  Stock Stable.

43.  Orlando Garcia IF.  Washed out in SJ.  Just coming back in Augusta.  Stock Down.

44.  Tyler Rogers RHP.  Very nice numbers for Sacramento in the Sillyball league.  Stock Up.

45.  Garrett Cave RHP.  Uneven numbers for SJ as reliever.  Stock Down.

46.  Solomon Bates RHP.  Uneven numbers for Augusta and SJ.  Stock Stable.

47.  Conner Menez LHP- Strong numbers in both AA and AAA.  Well positioned for a second half promo to SF.  Stock Way Up!

48.  Blake Rivera RHP.  Inconsistent numbers for Augusta.  Stock Stable.

49.  Conner Nurse RHP.  Conservative placement back in AZL but pitching well. Stock Stable.

50.  Yorlis Rodriguez 3B/2B.  Started strong in S-K, but then slumped.  Hitting better his last few games.  Stock Stable.

HM Stocks UP:  Sean Roby 3B, Frankie Tostado 1B, Dalton Combs OF, Sam Moll LHP, Peter Maris IF, Ismael Munguia OF, Jesus Tona RHP, Ricardo Genoves C, Jacob Lopez LHP, Tyler Flores OF/1B.

  1. Juan De Paula went to Blue Jays as part of Pillar trade. He's getting pounded in A ball. Stock down.

  2. CJ Hinojosa went to Milwaukee for Kratz. Similar results in Brewer AA as with Richmond although he has picked it up some lately.

  3. Is it possible that the Giants have "fixed" up their outfield for the short term and maybe the long term if some combination of Ramos, Bishop, Canario, Rincones, and maybe a couple of Armani Smith, PJ Hilson, Bryce Johnson, Combs, Munguia, and Flores develop?
On June 21st SF salvaged Oriole castoff Joey Rickard and he is avenging the PCL with .400/.443/.618 in 15 games (which means nothing really) but he joins Duggar, Gerber, and Shaw to unseat the recently successful Dickerson, Pillar, Slater, and Yastrzemski rotation to make a marked improvement over Parra, Reed, and Joe who comprised the early unsuccesful Giants. Duggar who was in the opening day mix is now looking on!
Perhaps the priority should be a middle infielder -- could fixing all that ails the surging Nationals (a proven winning SP and as much relief pitching as they want) be worth a highly regarded SS prospect?

  4. Nice rundown! Lots more downs than ups, unfortunately. But more importantly, the top guys are either up or stable, so that's good.
