The Giants used a right-hand heavy lineup to ambush a rookie LHP while Jeff Samardzija pitched an 8-inning Quality Start in a blowout game in San Diego. Key Lines:
Donovan Solano SS- 2 for 6, 2B. BA= .294. Solano has been a pretty good RH platoon bat against LHP's. He's hitting .346 over his last 7 games and .364 over his last 15.
Tyler Austin LF- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB. BA= .198. Austin's booming double in the 5'th with the bases loaded keyed a 4-spot that broke the game open for the Giants.
Buster Posey C- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .255. Posey's double up the L-CF alley drove in Tyler Austin in the 5'th and knocked SP Logan Allen out of the game.
Evan Longoria 3B- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(8), HBP. BA= .226. The AB after his HR, Longo got hit on the shoulder by reliever Robert Stock that looked like a purpose pitch and drew some scowls and yells from the Giants dugout. I went back and looked at the HR and there was no bat flip, lingering in the box or delay in the HR trot, so if it was on purpose, I'm not sure what Stock's beef was.
Kevin Pillar CF- 1 for 5, HR(12). Pillar followed the HBP with a 3-run blast of his own. Take that! Pillar has homered in consecutive games and is 6 for 13 over his last 3.
Austin Slater RF- 2 for 5, 3B, HR(1). BA= .400. Hard to tell much from one game, espectially a blowout like this, but Austin Slater sure looked happy to be back in the major leagues. Hope he stays for awhile.
Jeff Samardzija RHP- 8 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 14/3. ERA= 4.32. Samardzija looked a bit shaky in the first inning but then sharpened up. He hit his spots and mixed up his pitches. It was the kind of workhorse start the Giants gave him a $90 M contract for.

Tyler Beede tries to keep the July winning streak going tonight against lefty Matt Strahm. Think we might see the same Giants lineup again?

A very sad and shocking note: Angels LHP Tyler Skaggs was found dead in his hotel room in Texas where the Angels were supposed to start a series against the Rangers. No further indication as to what the cause may have been except foul play is not suspected.

I for one have been a long time supporter of Austin Slater.
ReplyDeleteHe is still young at 26, best wishes for him to be our new super sub!

Dickerson is listed by many sources as a free agent after this year but BaseballReference shows differently.
ReplyDeleteProbably a FA -- any trade value?
Given the Giants first 2019 winning month in June and undefeated in July, will they wait-and-see past mid-July before pulling triggers?
If you examine the minor league stats of Austin Slater and Bryan Reynolds they are nearly identical. Slater was one of the country's top HS hitters and may have been a choice draft pick until a freak injury (frisbee I believe) sidelined hom a couple of years. He was a steal in the 8th Round.
ReplyDeletePillar, Tyler Austin, Dickerson have infused this lineup with power. Solano has a live bat too.
Solano taking playing time from Craw is a good thing
DeleteI'm a fan of Slater's as well. But, with the bat, I get a definite Nate Scheirholtz ceiling vibe coming from him. I just don't think that bat plays consistently at the MLB level. (Nate was solid in the minors, hitting .300 at every level if I remember correctly.)
DeleteNate: higher K rate but higher SLG percent in MILB. Aside from numbers - I think Slater has more character. Let's see if Slater gets the AB's.
