Tyler Fitzgerald broke up a no-hitter in the 7'th inning and 3 sacrifice flies were enough to support a Quality Start by Robbie Ray. Key Lines:
Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 1 for 4. BA= .312. Fitz broke up the combined no-hitter against Kenta Maeda RHP to lead off the 7'th inning on a ground ball up the middle. He took 3B on Ramos single through the right side. Michael Conforto brought him home on an oppo-field sac fly.
Mark Canha DH- 1 for 3, SF. BA= .243. Canha was the offensive hero as he led off the 8'th inning with a line-drive single over 2B, took 3B on Brett Wisely's single through the right side and scored on Patrick Bailey's sac fly to tie the game. Then he delivered the Giants third sac fly in the 9'th for the walk-off game winner. I associate Canha with the Oakland A's where he was a major Giants killer but he apparently grewu up a Giants fan and is living his dream.
Robbie Ray LHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 3.98. No-hitters and double digit K's are not sustainable but QS are, and we should expect one almost every start with the current rotation. The Giants should win the majority of those games. One reason I think this much-maligned stat is underrated.
Landon Roupp RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 5.40. Roupp was called up to replace.....what? Camilo Doval?! Roupp's two shutdown innings were key to the Giants comeback win.
Tyler Rogers RHP pitched a scoreless top of the 9'th.
With the Win, the Giants gained a game in the Wild Card race and now trail by just 2 games.
Logan Webb RHP tries to extend the Giants winning ways today facing TBD.
Churn Watch:
In a stunning turn of events, Camilo Doval RHP was optioned to AAA Sacramento to work on his command and times to the plate. Landon Roupp was recalled. Curt Casali C was reinstated from the paternity list and Jakson Reetz C was optioned back to AAA Sacramento. It should probably be mentioned that Casali was charge with 3 errors in the game.
Concern-Brett Wisely. Over last 28 days he is 8 for 47 which equals a .170 BA. He struck out 13 times during that period and walked 3 times. His slash line looks like this over that time period. .170/.200/.192. Despite hitting a leaky single last night, he looked lost at the plate. Wisely waas swinging at pitches out of the zone. Meanwhile Casy Schmidt since being called up slash line looks like this.115/.143/.423. So more power than Wisely with 2 HRs, but not getting on base. Not sure what the answer is, but Brett Auerbach (OPS=.877). at AAA. I imagine that would require a roster move. Or, when will Thairo be back?
ReplyDeleteMight be time to churn in Donovan Walton or Brett Auerbach to fill in at 2B.
DeleteMLB.com: INF Thairo Estrada (left wrist sprain)
DeleteExpected return: Late August
Estrada has resumed hitting in the cage and is expected to progress to hitting on the field on Aug. 10.
So, maybe a week?
Brett Auerbach has reinvented himself in Sacramento after pretty much failing in Richmond. Doc has compared him to Fitzgerald in the past plus he can play catcher! Walton has more history and has done well in Sacramento, also, and he bats left which appeals to FZ.
DeleteYouth or experience?
OTOH, Estrada may only be a week away and wouldn't require a 40-man change which both Auerbach and Walton would.
brett auerbach is going to get a look in spring training as thairo is likely to be non-tendered this offseason. second base is looking like a position that will need to be addressed on the trade route with it being slim pickings in free agency.
DeleteDoc, continuing to keep fingers crossed here in Winnipeg.
ReplyDeleteNice to see Canha providing a spark.
I am sure the club house would have keep their thoughts to themselves.
Though surely they murmured approval of Doval being sent ot Scaremento.
Given the number of other Giants who have been earnign frequent flyers points going back and forth between San Fran and Sac.
Wake up call hopefully for Doval.
FRod use to dry me crazy, but Doval made me say F sharp to often!
Lets hope Logan's change up is working today.
Richard in Winnipeg
I've read rumors that some of Doval's teammates thought he needed an attitude adjustment.
DeleteCalifornia IS big but one usually doesn't fly between Oracle Park and Raley Field, about 1¼ hour drive, less than time spent boarding an airplane.
Delete(Note: Raley Field is now called Sutter Health Park.)
Wasn't expecting them to win that game after the highs of the road trip, but they found a way..Hats off to grinding away and some good pitching from Ray...Hopefully they find their hitting shoes that were left at the airport!!..Bold decision with DOVAL but something had to be done...be intersting to see how Melvin gets it done with Taylor Rogers, Walker and Hicks.....ROUP's outing was key last night and hopefully he is healthy and can be a consistent relief arm for a bit....
ReplyDeleteLucianno? Play him or send him down...CANHA has been big..I guess I have a bad blindspot on former A's...Need some better offense from from 2B and utility IFs..Hopefully, Wisley as a lefty can get it together agains...Ditto for whoever is the RH bat playing 2B--Schmidt? Lucianno? Estrafad soon?
Time for Birdsong today to prove the league hasn't figured him out.

From 6 games under .500 on July 25th, 13 games behind, the Giants are 11-3 and facing the last soft spot of their schedule: 11 games until things get difficult, AND that's assuming the Braves don't turn things around. Atlanta has lost 6 in a row. Soler hit his first HR in a losing effort in Colorado.
ReplyDeleteSF dodged a GIANT bullet by not having to face Tarik Skubal in this series. Always has been a good pitcher, he's having a career year and leading MLB in several stats.
ReplyDeleteThe way it's going, SD and AZ are never going to lose again, so the targets have to be NYM and ATL.
ReplyDeleteToday, the Braves won & the Mets lost, so SF trails the Braves now by just 1½ games.
They play each other 3 times @ Atlanta Sep 24-26.
Correction: SD and AZ have a 3-game series with one another – they close the season in Arizona with 3 potentially BIG games!
