Casey Schmitt and Grant McCray had big games at the plate in support of a dominant start by Logan Webb as the Giants salvaged the final game of the 4-game series against their Wild Card rivals after losing the first three. Key Lines:
Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 1 for 4, SF, 2 SB(14). BA= .317. Fitz singled to lead off the Giants first inning and stole 2B and 3B but did not score. He drove in a run with a sac fly.
Casey Schmitt 2B- 3 for 4, HR(5). BA= .208. Schmitt is 4 for 5 over his last two games after going 0 for 20 over his previous 8 games.
Grant McCray CF- 2 for 3, HR(1), BB. BA= .286. After going 0 for 4 and looking a bit wide-eyed in his first MLB game, McCray had a game today driving in a run on a squeeze bunt hit and then homering in the 6'th inning. Is this the dawning of the Grant McCray era?
Logan Webb RHP- 7.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 10/2. ERA= 3.17. After a rough patch in the month of July, Webb has allowed just 2 runes in 29.1 IP over his last 4 starts.
With the Win, the Giants gained back a game in the Wild Card standings and trail the Braves by 3.5 games. Considering they lost both the first two games in extra innings, this series was a big missed opportunity.
The Giants have a rare Friday off before starting a 2-game series in Oakland with Hayden Birdsong RHP facing Osvaldo Bido RHP.
this is what i need to see out Casey Schmitt, he's pretty much playing to keep his roster spot going into September. can he finally turn that corner and have sustained success at the plate? Fitz is a grad at this point, if McCray can stick, all the sudden Luis Matos could head to the trading block this offseason with Encarnacion getting near grad status.
ReplyDeleteWould be nice if McCray grabs an outfield spot. Love Matos but he isn’t there yet. Ideally we have all three with our CF and you have 4 guys capable of playing. Keeps em fresh and you can figure out a DH rotation (like Ramos) yesterday. We could have a team largely homegrown next year. Premium on resigning Chappy
ReplyDeleteFarhan's successor will have to make a tough decision this off-season on Matos. There now may be no room at the inn and could be traded to fill other holes
DeleteGiants have 5 winnable games (A's and White Sox) at home & could be 5 games over .500 with sweeps.
ReplyDeleteMets are 4 over .500 and have 3 coming up with the Orioles, Braves are 6 over and have 3 coming up with the Phillies.
Then Mets have 7 with D'backs and Padres, and Braves have Twins and more with Phillies.
