Robbie Ray bounced back from a disaster start with a better than quality start and the Giants lineup pecked out 4 1-run innings for the win. Key Lines:
Heliot Ramos LF- 1 for 2, 2 BB. BA= .280. After striking out to end the first inning, Heliot drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk in the 3'rd inning. He then drove in the Giants 3'rd run with a line drive RBI single in the 5'th inning. He then walked to lead off the 7'th and scored on YtY's RBI double. Nice game for Heliot!
Mike Yastrzemski RF- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .241. Giants only multi-hit of the game and only XBH. YtY has been scuffling batting just .174 over his last 7 games and .222 over his last 15.
Curt Casali C- 1 for 3, BB. BA= .205. With Patrick Bailey hitting the IL with on oblique strain, Casali is the starting catcher. He got on base twice and scored twice out of the 9-hole.
Robbie Ray LHP- 6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 9 K's. ERA= 4.88. Dominant start for Ray.
Ryan Walker RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, Save(2). ERA= 2.07. After empatically finishing off last night's game with 2 K's, Walker extended the string to 5 consecutive K's. I'm thinking he keeps the closer role even after/if Doval returns.
Despite the Win, the Giants remain 3.5 games behind the Braves in the race for the third and final Wild Card playoff spot.
Logan Webb RHP tries to complete the sweep tomorrow afternoon facing a tough customer in Garrett Crochet LHP.
Churn Watch:
Jakson Reetz C was recalled from AAA Sacramento to replace Patrick Bailey during his IL stay.
Re:Comments regarding Farhan Zaidi
ReplyDeleteYesterday two contributors gave positive comments to Farhan's tenure as a Giants GM. At best, I will give him a nod if he can accomplish the following:
1) Keep both Robbie Ray aand Blake Snell. Both pitchers have opt out years when 2024 season is over. These opt-out contracts are killers.
2) Cleans house on the offense side of things. Conforto (31 YO), Yaz (33 YO) and even Late night LaMont (30 YO) should all be shipped out.
3) Sign Matt Chapman. His defense alone is wonderful and IMHO his hitting has been solid after a slow start.
4) Get an anchor to the lineup. We need a hitter on this team that will strike fear into opposing pitchers and make everyone around him better. Improve the lineup so the Blake Snells and Robbie Rays of the world want to stay.
5) Stop the churn where Farhan picks guys off the scrap heap and gives them tryouts during the regular season.
1. Agree churning opt-out contracts means we start from scratch every offseason. Not sure keeping Ray and Snell are worth any cost but I do hope at least one of them stays. 2. I'll be shocked if Conforto is back next season. YtY should not be a starting OF but may be worth keeping as a 4'th or 5'th OF for one more arb-eligible season. Definitely keep LMWJ. We can move on from him when Bryce Eldridge arrives. 3. Love what Chapman is doing this season but there's yet another opt out. Keeping him depends on how long a contract it would take. He'll turn 32 yo in April. 4. In FZ's defense he's been trying to get a lineup anchor. His lack of success is due mostly to factors out of his control. 5. The Churn needs to be more selective but I wouldn't stop it entirely.
DeleteIf the FA signing either comes with an opt out or there is no signing, what should FZ do?
DeleteDoes FZ "want" opt outs or is he stuck with them?
What if the choice is an early opt out or a very long contract surely beyond most players utility? Especially for hitters, does FZ really have a choice?
One GOOD thing about an opt-out contract: isn't the player supremely incentivized to succeed?
Mets play the Orioles this AM. Giants will know who wins, probably during their game with Sox.
ReplyDeleteThis has some importance because SF can "tie" for best WC contender behind the Braves with a Giant win and a Met loss. ("Tie" is because of extra games played by SF in which they are 1-1.)
Wouldn't it be "easier" to vie for the WC with no one between you and the cheese?
If doval gets back on track, do they entertain trade offers this off-season, LWJ should be the full-time DH next season and give blake sabol a first base glove next season. Matos may also suddenly be on the trading block this off-season.
ReplyDeleteGiants Achilles heal is/remains moving runners: the are 29th in team rankings (according to https://www.teamrankings.com/mlb/stat/left-on-base-per-game) with more than 15 runners left, led by Chapman with 212 (ranked #14), which makes sense because he bats behind the Giants best at getting on base.
ReplyDeleteSF has 2 more in the Top 100: Estrada and Canha, who brought a big number with him from Detroit.
Last night the Giants were 2-11 with RISP, leaving runners everywhere individually, totaling 22 (https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/gametracker/boxscore/MLB_20240820_CHW@SF/).
