Down on the Farm: 8/7/2024

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats cooled the Albuquerque Isotopes 8-4:

Wade Meckler CF- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .346.
Grant McCray RF- 3 for 5, 2B, 3B, SB(12).  BA= .279.
Trenton Brooks DH- 2 for 2, 2 SF, BB.  BA= .310.
Brett Auerbach C- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .298.
Donovan Walton 2B- 4 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .299.
Mason Black RHP- 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K.  ERA= 4.70.
Clay Helvey RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.67.

Wade Meckler back to hitting for high average.  I still question if there's enough power to sustain the bat at the MLB level.  Grant McCray has a 13 game hitting streak going back to July 23.  He is 19 for 57(.333) in that span.  Donovan Walton has two 4-hit games in a row.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Hartford Yard Goats 5-2:

Jairo Pomares RF- 2 for 5.  BA= .259.
Andy Thomas C- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .234.
Matt Higgins 1B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .318.
Diego Velasquez SS- 3 for 4.  BA= .250.
Nick Sinacola RHP- 4.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  BA= 2.85.
Travis Kiest RHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(4).  ERA= 3.28.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds topped the Vancouver Canadians 9-3:

Bryce Eldridge 1B- 1 for 3, 3 BB.  BA= .297.
Rodolfo Nolasco RF- 4 for 5, HR(10), BB.  BA= .255.
Charlie Szykowny 3B- 2 for 4, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .313.
Cole Foster SS- 2 for 5.  BA= .118.
Alexander Suarez LF- 3 for 5, 2B, 2 SB(15).  BA= .282.
Tommy Kane LHP- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.09.
Hunter Dula RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.05.

A: San Jose Giants edged out the Inland Empire 66'ers 2-1:

Walker Martin SS- 1 for 4, BB.  BA= .143.
Guillermo Williamson 1B- 3 for 3, 2B.  BA= .221.
Ryan Reckley 2B- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .111.
Cale Lansville LHP- 4 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.76.
Ian Villers RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.32.
Timmy Manning LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.38.

  1. Very interesting year for Giants prospects. We have 4 new players that look like they will be solid (maybe stars) going into the future- Fitz,Ramos, Harrison and Birdsong. That is truly impressive. At the start of the year I thought Ramos was a bust, Fitz was a utility man, and Birdsong was unknown. Only Harrison was expected to excel. I thought Matos would be the position player to emerge but he seems to have fallen back a little and who knows about Luciano . I have a feeling that McCray may be the next to surprise. An excellent, somewhat unexpected bounty of young players. And- Eldridge is on the way also.

  3. Re Wade Meckler and his lack of power:
There is our very own Duane Kuiper (1 HR career), but he was an infielder.
    Brett Butler didn't hit many.
Willie Randolph might be the best.
Jon Jay had a lucrative career playing the OF without hitting many HRs, very few later in his career.
For Meckler, the hill is high but possible if he's good enough at getting on base.

    1. Rod Carew averaged 5 HR a year, I'm not saying he's Carew but so far he looks like an excellent BA/OBP guy. If he can hit for avg in the BL some team will find a spot for him. Luis Arraez, an All-Star the past 3 years, limited power but has a little more double power than Meckler, while Meckler has a lot more speed but hasn't yet learned how to use it. Hopefully Farhan will leave him at Sacramento (get his AB's) and not bounce him around like Luciano and Matos.

    2. First of all you are right about Meckler not being Rod Carew. There was only one Rod Carew. Secondly, the game has changed dramatically since Carew played. BA is not valued like it once was. There's a reason why Luis Arraez has been traded twice. Despite his gaudy BA, he just isn't that valuable a player. Almost every pitcher can threw mid-90's heat up in the zone and force singles hitters to hit the ball in the air. Meckler will have to prove he can force pitchers to respect him at the MLB level.

  4. Interesting that MATOS was cent down to RICHMOND..maybe to be near by with the RAMOS thuimb injury, or to get both him and meckler/Mcray playing time??

If Lucianno doesn't play, send him down (with Canha and Encarnacion already above him on the pecking order....Does ESTRADA come back?)..

ELDRIDGE is the key bat to the future.. SINACOLA has had a very god year, can't sleep on him.
