Game Wrap 8/4/2024: Giants 8 Reds 2

The Giants brought their hitting shoes in support of Robbie Ray who had a much better start than last time out.  Key Lines:

Lamonte Wade Jr 1B- 3 for 5, HR(4).  BA= .294.  LMWJ has been slumping but comes out of it today. Season OBP is still over .400.

Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 2 for 4, HR(11), HBP.  Fitz has chance to win  NL ROY.  Despite a very late start he has accumulated 2.2 fWAR and still has 2 months to go.  Among NL rookie hitters only Masyn Winn at 2.6 and Jackson Merrill at 2.5 are ahead of him.  Among pitchers, Shota Imanaga has 2.5 and Paul Skenes 2.4.  I would say Skenes is probably the frontrunner.

Matt Chapman 3B- 2 for 5, HR(17).  BA= .246.  Let's see, Chapman only needs 8 more HR's to reach my projection of 24.  Probably won't win Gold Glove at 3B, but his defense is in the black per Fangraphs metrics.  He's accumulated an fWAR of 3.4 and a 5 fWAR season is in reach with just under 2 months to go.

Michael Conforto LF- 3 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .231.  After a brutal slump lasting over 1 month, Conforto has gotten hot.  He's always been a streaky hitter.  From now to the end of the season would be a great time for an extended hot streak.

Robbie Ray LHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 4.40.  Much better than last start.  Can he be the 3'rd head of a 3-headed monster with Snell and Webb with the rooks contributing as much as they can the rest of the way?  It sure would be great to have all 5 members of the current rotation back next year.

As of this writing the Giants sit 4.5 games behind in the Wild Card race but there are multiple games involving contenders still in progress.

The Giants move on to Washington for a 4-game series with Logan Webb RHP starting game one tomorrow evening against Patrick Corbin LHP.

BTW, David Axlerod just describe the enthusiasm for Kamala Harris as "irrational exuberance".  Wonder where he got that description from?(Full Disclosure:  I got it from former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan's description of the stock market in testimony to congress many years ago).  Fun times!

  4. Doc, nice to see the boys having fun. Keeping our fingers crossed for a strong August and Sept!
    Fyi since you started it
A few words from the Great White North > lately Axelrod and James Carville gives me hopes for a remake of Grumpy Old Men.
Back in 2020 I told my wife Kamala will be the first female President of the US of A.
    Go get get Kamala!

    1. I am cautiously optimistic and yes, I don't enjoy listening to Axelrod or Carville on TV. I did a little Google searching of the phrase. It's apparently a bigger thing than I thought. There is an entire Wikipedia article titled "Irrational Exuberance" and it originated with a speech by Alan Greenspan. My memory if of hearing him refer to in in testimony to Congress.

    2. ...and while we are on the subject of people we don't like to see or hear on TV, can we please stop asking Mary Trump to give us her opinion of her crazy uncle?

  5. RE: Matt Chapman. I was listening to the game and dave Fleming was raving about the play that Chapman made on a slow roller to third by TJ Freidl that he barehanded and threw a bullet to first to end the inning. At the time the game was close (3-2) and it saved Ryan Walker as Elly De La Cruz was on third. Fleming opinion was that Chapman my be the only 3B to make that play.
RE: Axelrod. I assume that he is a baseball fan as I saw him down in Arizona at a spring training game a few years back.

    1. Chapman has been a revelation. I think he makes the barehanded play on slow rollers better than any 3B I've ever seen. Otherwise he isn't spectacular at anything but is solid in all facets of the game.

    2. ....and I'm guessing David Axelrod is a Cubs fan so probably does not read my blog.

  6. Doc, my wife keeps saying "you need to stop watching the TV it's driving you crazy"!
I told here I won't be happy till Donnie finally become completely irrelevant.
Because of him, we have an opposition leader in Parlaiment here > mimicking the same type of tripe as one of my clients who lives in Southern Cal. called the "orange turd" Made me lol during our zoom meeting.
Anyway on to better stuff > Webb today then Snell and Birdsong > time for a sweep.

    1. I've almost completely stopped watching TV for news except for major event(usually catastrophes of some sort) that require minute-by-minute updates. The ongoing political news and commentary is just insufferable on all sides. I nuked a comment re. Kamala Harris being a "dumpster dive". First of all I disagree as if you compare her qualifications with past Presidents she compares very well and unfortunately the available alternatives are completely unacceptable.

  7. Will Matos get the call if Ramos goes on the IL?
Or will it be Meckler who also is on the 40-man roster and has picked up his game through 5 levels – ACL to PCL – this year? That would be very Zaidi-ish!

  8. Patrick Corbin has not been the pitcher the Nationals signed to a big contract (for the time - $140M, 6-year) back in 2018.
It ends this year with a $35,416,667 payout for 22 starts and counting, a 2-11 record with a 5.88 ERA.
Watch the ole lefty breeze through the lineup the first time and get pounded the second...

  9. I think Fitzgerald should be under consideration for RoY but Skenes is probably a big favorite. Fitzgerald’s success was mostly unexpected ( kind of like Brock Purdy) and there is a lot of skepticism that he’ll continue his current play. I believe in both Fitz and Brock. Fitz is just a much better athlete than I imagined before I actually watched him play.

  10. watching the game yesterday on MLB roku broadcast. Reds Announcer John Sadak and Javy called the game. Very nice game called. Sadak I thought was very professional knowledfeable. They at one point interviewed Webb. I can't help but always find Webby to be so thoughtful, humble and genulinely comes acrooss as a real nice guy. Kind you'd like to have a beer with1

  11. Nice double header today: Giants-Nationals early, Phillies-Dodgers late.
Mets-Cards play 1½ hours before the Giants – one consolation of being behind is the Giants can gain on someone when teams ahead of them play each other ;)
