The Giants staked Hayden Birdsong to a 4-run lead in the first inning but he gave it all back and more as he was shelled for 7 runs in the 2'nd and 3'rd innings. Key Lines:
Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .317. Fitz keeps raking.
Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 5, HR(16), SB(3). BA= .287. Welcome back Heliot! That thumb healed fast!
Michael Conforto LF- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(12), BB. BA= .236. They say Conforto is streaky. He's 8 for 14 with 4 doubles and 2 HR over his last 4 games.
Jerar Encarnacion RF- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .353. Jerar's bat seems to be for real. Still very small sample though.
I'll spare you the pitching lines. They are not fun to look at.
Despite the Loss the Giants remain 4.5 games behind in the Wild Card race.
Blake Snell LHP tries to get the Giants back on the winning side of the ledger tomorrow evening facing Jake Irvin RHP.
Churn Watch:
Hayden Birdsong RHP was recalled from AAA Sacramento to start the game. Spencer Bivens RHP was optioned to AA Richmond. Curt Casali C was placed on paternity leave. Jakson Reetz C was selected from AAA Sacramento.
DC just continues to be a house of horrors for young Giants pitchers. This was a very poorly managed game by Bob Melvin. He should have never let Birdsong try to pitch the third inning and this would have been a perfect to pull Patrick Bailey and get him some rest after it got out of hand.
ReplyDeletewell put
DeleteWith an offense worth 3-5 runs per game, the Giants will live and die by their pitching, but they won't win every game the "best rotation in baseball" starts.
ReplyDeleteDoc picked out batters #1&2 and #6&7 – in between the team was 1 for 20, stranding 15 runners (LOB stat on live box score provided by https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/gametracker/boxscore/MLB_20240806_SF@WAS/).
Kind of expected from Birdsong....His first of a few bad ones were bound to happen for a kid with only a few games above AA and DC against the crappy Nats seemed like the perfect spot...But wait, this is the best rotation in baseball that will carry the Giants to the POs according to the self-serving FZ proclamation..Well, there sure as heck can't be any bad games from Snell, Ray and Weber....Harrison? who knows? gonna be ups and down
ReplyDeleteIn either event, love to see Fitz and Ramos end the season strong..When does Lucianno get sent down?

Since the All Star break, Bailey is slashing .143/.194/.353 in 67 PAs, 1 XBH (2B), 28% Ks. Giants are 9-8. His BA has dropped 30 points (.283 to .253).
ReplyDeleteCasali is 1 for 11 in same period, but the Giants are 3-1 in his starts.
Bailey hits far better when he bats 6th (.364/.417/.727/1.144), he is not good batting 4th (.180/.250/.279/.529), based on just 24 & 68 PAs, respectively.
His most common batting position is #3 (.260/.361/.411/.772), 86 PAs.
Bailey's L/R splits are significant, especially for power:
LHB (260 PAs): .259/.332/.399/.731 (7 HRs, 17 XBHs)
RHB (71 PAs): 231/.282/.277/.559 (0 HRs, 3 XBHs)
Probably should take his days off against LHP.
Villar: .257/.270/.457/.727 OPS+: 106
ReplyDeleteSchmitt: .188/.209/.422/.631 OPS+: 77, he has some power and occasionally runs into an HR against LHP but overall is not clearly a better choice than Villar.
Wisely: .257/.293/.380/.673 OPS+: 93
Wisely (as LHB) is primarily used against RHP, but his splits are significantly better as a RHB: OPS .928 vs .605, but his RHB (vs LHP) is only 41 PAs because he is not used that way. Why?
Schmitt is the only one of the 3 drafted by FZ, although he did trade for Wisely.
Villar was drafted in 2018 so may not be the first choice. He is the oldest (27 yo) by a couple of years.
The 3 are equal as far as payroll and status (pre-arb for 2 more years). If Luciano can settle into 2B, he's probably the best of them.
Backup catcher should be on FZ’s shopping list this winter … if they can get out of the ridiculous contract with Murphy!
